a bit disappointed.

I bought this lens when I was in New York from [...]. Not quite happy as I am not able to get the pin sharp image I am looking for when taking birds pictures at 350/400mm. The details of the birds are not clear.

disappointed

I bought this lens because it was a 400mm and I wanted that extra range for shooting sports. I have a fixed 17mm and a 10-17mm zoom from Tokina which I've been very satisfied with when shooting landscapes so I decided to save a buck and see if the 400mm zoom could perform in fast paced shooting situations at work. It is a heavy lens but I like the heavy duty construction. The problems I've experienced very often are SLOW! SLOW! SLOW! autofocus or out of focus shots. Manual focus can produce nice landscape shots but for fast paced sports it just doesn't cut it.

Very happy

Have had the lens for about 2 weeks and I think it was a good purchase.1/2 the price of the closest Canon lens. Bit on the heavy side but I expected that I would need a tripod for most shots. It's not that it wont focus its just that it will get heavy to hold after a while. The zoom works great and haven't found any problem areas yet. the 400mm length realy lets you reach out there. Think I will still use my 28 - 135 canon as a walk around lens but this one will always kept handy for that special shot just a little to far away for the 135 length.

About Tokina 80-400mm,4.5-5.6 AT-X Pro D AF Lens for Canon

In 1996 Tokina created a new class of telephoto lens when it introduced the original AT-X 840 AF. This was the smallest lens available that had a bright f/5.6 aperture at 400mm. Now Tokina is recreating the lens for the digital age.

Still the smallest SLR lens available that zooms to 400mm, the AT-X 840 AF D has a smooth and quick internal focusing system that means the all-metal inner barrel that houses the heaviest glass elements does not have to rotate when the lens focuses, making it much faster than the previous models.

Optically, the AT-X840 AF D has new multi-coatings applied to the elements that are formulated to compensate of the highly reflective CCD and CMOS sensors in today's Digital SLR cameras. The new multi-coating greatly reduces the chance of internal flare or ghost reflections.

A built-in tripod collar makes for a well-balanced camera/lens combination when using a tripod or monopod. For best results, Tokina always recommends using a tripod or monopod with telephoto lenses.

Tokina kept ease of use in mind with the new AT-X 840 AF D. A new lens hood with the a PL Assist spring loaded thumb wheel allows a circular polarizer or special effects filter to be rotated while the lens hood is in place. No more removing the hood to change the position of the filter.

What's in the box:

  • Dedicated lens hood (BH-725)
