Classic tripod, easy to use, steady, sturdy - got a new one after retiring my last Tiltall bought in 1984! According to the math, pretty good investment. I've tried a couple of other tripods, but this is still my first choice.

Here I am viewing a nearly total eclipse in 1970. On the tripod is a camera lens formerly mounted to the bottom of an aircraft for doing photo surveys to update USGS maps. I am using it to project a nice image of the Sun to watch - and trace the shapes. Note how ROCK SOLID this tripod is! The new one is just like the one in this picture - few products are still as good as they used to be... Enough said.

First; this is a very sturdy unit and seems to be made of very good materials. Even when legs are fully extended, seems really stable. It does collapse to a size that is do-able, even though it is not the lightest tripod available. The leg extension is good, but do not unscrew the catch too much-it will suddenly become a minor problem. Keep it tight-and all will be right; stability rules!

I'm using this for my astronomy travel tripod and found it to be very stable. The settling time is around 3 sec. at high powers with a 12 lb. load on it. My travel setup is a 5" Mak/Cas and a light weight alt/az mount. The manufacturing tolerances are very tight and the aircraft aluminum used makes it a joy to use. Great tripod at a very good price.

Many have known the Tiltall tripod - like Phillipe Halsman or Fabian Bachrach or the photographers who worked with LIFE" magazine - have known it of be one of the finest professional quality tripod available.
Creators of the Tiltall
In early 1900s, the Marchioni family immigrated to the United States from the Italian Alps. The two Marchioni brothers, Caesar and Mark were skilled engineers with a growing interest in photography. They decided to develop a practical tripod for their own use and in 1946 the brothers decided to produce and sell their first lightweight, solid and versatile Tiltall.
The Tiltall Tradition and Leitz
From 1946 to 1973, Tiltall fame spread worldwide because of its design, quality and superior performance. In 1973, the Leitz Company in Rockleigh, New Jersey, the USA subsidiary of the famous German Leica 35mm system, contracted the brothers to move all the tripod works to Rockleigh. Here the Marchioni brothers personally trained the staff carry on the design and quality workmanship. This tradition continues today.
