Questions & Answers

DAN T : Is there a way to copy all 4 tracks to the computer so you can mix the tracks later ?JORDAN V : Yup-- just drag the files off the SD card!
Sebron S : Does this unit have a 3.5mm input? If not, is using an xlr adapter a reliable answer?KIM N : I use an xlr adapter.
Harry G : It seems so complicated , I bought me DR-40 at the Knoxville Guitar Center, they could not find the box , it came in, as this was their last one and on display, so they printed an 80 Page how to use. I got no other parts, but need them. How can I get the sub cable and the 2gB card?CHRISTOPHER L : 1. Probably the best place to start is the Tascam web site then to Products, Handheld Recorders, then to TR-40. The different tabs on the site have all sorts of information and PDFs to download. The site also has some videos and such 2. The web site lists the cards that can be used, you can get a card up to 32GB for it. The 2GB card is just a selling point so you can use it out of the box. Get a good quality card at least class 10 or UHS-1 (I would recommend either Lexar or Sandisk (the exact part numbers are listed on the site and don't be fooled thinking the higher burst speed or "plus" will be better.) 3. The plugs on the bottom take both types of microphone plugs the balanced XLR (If I remembered correctly) and the phono style plug, (I forgot what it's called but it should be listed on the literature). I'm not sure if this is what you meant by sub cable. 4. The plug on the side should be for a standard headset for listening or line out. 5. For the remote plug, this if for the optional equipment such as foot switch or remote. Hopefully this helps

mmmm good

Good useful budget option, buy it. good for on location, on-set, with or without mic, great savior if your alternatives go down and I even used it as a passthrough with my shotgun to my laptop since my other recording interface moved to a different studio. It's been a lifesaver.

Records well with a few “buts”

This is one of those pieces of gear that you need to determine what you’re going to use it for. I bought it for a client of mine to record voice tracks. The pluses are that the microphones sound great and they are included. The price is also very attractive as Tascam has newer, improved models. There is no power adapter included, so you will be relying on batteries. I think a power adapter should have been included. You can buy one as an added-price accessory. The recorder is not that difficult to use, but it is an older style that relies on menus. The graphics on the screen are very basic and look like they’re from another digital era. Think MS-DOS. You can use an inexpensive tripod for a mic stand if you don’t want to spend the big bucks for a more professional set up. This works fine. My biggest gripe is these mics are extremely easy to pop If you are within 12 inches of them. If you are recording voice tracks using the built-in microphones, you will have to get some sort of a pop filter. I bought one that Auray makes. It does the job but that’s a few extra dollars that you have to add on. You can avoid that if you have an external mic or mics that have an XLR or quarter inch connector. It’s nice to have that option. Since my client is not an audio engineer, this recorder has an absolutely invaluable feature. It will record a duplicate of the original recording at a lower input level. That way you are more likely to have a track that is not over modulated. I love this feature and hats off to Tascam for including it. as noted earlier, you must have a good idea of what you’re going to use this recorder for before you buy it because it may not fit your needs. It is a four track recorder, but if I were doing music recording that was in any way complicated, I would not like to try to deal with the layers of menus. You might be a whiz at it, but I’m not.

Tascam DR-40/Adorama

The Tascam DR-40 is a legend there is nothing to say that hasn't been said about it. Now Adorama is the place to buy it from ADORAMA RULES! They are in the top 3 of my favorites online stores to buy from. Even Adorama's eBay store is top notch, High quality gear at affordable prices. -JGH

Incredible value and tons of options!

I love this! Haven’t used it at an event yet, but I bought it for weddings. Needed something with XLR inputs, and this has that and much more! The safety track is my favorite feature- a failsafe for hot recordings!

Great sound

Best bang for buck in the field recorder market. Plastic doesn't feel cheap. Feels sturdy. Noise floor is low. Battery life is good enough.

A great companion

Having owned the larger DR-60, this was what the doctor ordered. The other unit while very capable, this unit takes it all and puts it into a smaller, compact package with the same feature set. You need to take a few minutes to go through it, and get the settings right, then your ready for field work. I had to think twice about the onboard mics, but I am glad that I went ahead with it. They need to be set up correctly, or you wind up setting the dB input level incorrectly. Otherwise, what I wanted, and it delivers.

Budget Quality

A steal at $! Not the most rugged portable recorder…this is replacing another DR-40 purchased only 3 years ago but it’s a must have for anyone needing a quality field recorder with phantom power to XLR mic inputs.

Great audio at a great price.

This is a great deal on a great field recorder. The DR-40 might not have all the bells and whistles but it will capture great audio when paired with the right mic. The XLR inputs and 1/4" mount options are what really bring value to this little handheld. It's functions are easy to understand, it comes with a great manual, and best of all it's easy to use. I highly recommend it for anyone doing weddings or other special events.

Great For Capturing Audio

Use this device to capture audio for your video projects. It captures audio in stereo and in a digital format. It also allows flexibility in your audio work. It sure beats having to use your camcorder just to capture audio.
