This USB 2.0 extension cable is an active device. The USB signals going in and out of the extension cable are buffered to assure signal quality and the meeting of the USB's electrical and timing spec. Using passive cables over 16 feet in length for the purpose of extension will result in signal errors, noise and is not recommended. Four active 16 feet USB extensions and 1 passive 15 feet USB can be daisy chained together for a total of 79 feet before any drop-off in signal or quality is detected.

Plug the male side into your computer and then plug your device's USB cable into the female end of this extension cable so that the repeater goes closer to your device, not the computer.
