Bill C : I have an old fashioned push/pull (all arm, no motors) 17" Dobson. If I mount these on the two axes will they read out (after aligning them) the direction I'm pointing so I can use with iPad sky map programs like SkySafari?STEPHEN M : Mounting encoders is the first step in the process, but it will then be necessary to purchase an interface that will allow your computer or portable device to read the information from the encoders. Sky Engineering's Sky Commander is one such device, but there are others. Many of these will act as stand alone "digital setting circles (DSC)" with their own display as well as interfacing with external devices. Computers can attach to many DSCs directly via a serial port, but it will usually be necessary to purchase an interface to connect an iOS device. The SkyFi is such a device.
