The US Army 60mm refractor is capable of serving as a spotting scope, a terrestrial/land scope, or a beginner level astronomical scope. The main, objective lens is surprisingly good, particularly for the affordable price. The short focal length of the scope gives a wider field of view. The field of view of most of the competitive scopes is quite narrow, making it hard to find astronomical objects and locations on land. A penalty of any short focal length telescope, except for the refractors costing in the $1000s of dollars, is some visual aberrations around the outer edge of the view. The U.S. army scope shows a small amount of aberration on the periphery of the view, again surprisingly good for an inexpensive scope. The tripod is usable, but the scope could use a larger, more stable tripod. I just put the telescope on one of my good camera tripods. The little tripod that comes with the telescope will work when the scope is used for a spotting scope. The supplied eyepieces are the weak point of the telescope package. Again, one could expect no more with an inexpensive telescope. In fact, you would be hard put to buy even one of these minimally acceptable, but usable, eyepieces for the price of the entire telescope package. The eyepieces are 0.965 in diameter. These size eyepieces have faded from the market, replaced by 1 1/4 inch eyepieces. Better .965 eyepieces can be purchased off the net for reasonable prices. Adapters are available so the telescope can accept 1 1/4 diameter eyepieces. I will pick up an adapter so I can use my own 1 1/4 eyepieces. Overall, I am very pleased.

Amazing value for money - brilliant once set up well - light enough to carry anywhere and cheap enough to not be worried about while doing so - yet built decently enough to do the job Tripod was not at all bad for something included at this price point, would def recommend to friends

The US Army 60mm Refractor Telescope combines power and portability in a precision-built and rugged design. It features a 60mm objective lens with a 300mm focal length and a f/5 focal ratio. This telescope also has anti-reflection, fully multi-coated optics: they give you richer, clearer images by transmitting more light to the scope. And with the telescope’s exceptional focal length and wide eyepiece magnification range, you can see a variety of faraway objects and entities instantly. 8mm and 20mm eyepieces are included with 37.5x and 15x magnification, respectively. Plus, this refractor telescope features highly robust aluminum which makes it lightweight for easier transportation. It even has an intuitive Easy Mount that beginners and experts will find simple to use. Other features include a 90° star diagonal, a control arm on the scope’s Alt-Az mount, and a three-section tripod with an accessory tray.
The US Army 60mm Refractor Telescope is a complete kit for observing the moon, planets and bright deep-sky objects. Its manual mount has a control handle for precisely tracking your subjects. Two fully multicoated eyepieces provide 37.5x and 15x magnifications and the focuser will accept any 1.25" eyepiece or accessory for expanding your observation capabilities. An adjustable height aluminum tripod provides a stable platform for sky-watching and the included 90deg. star diagonal makes looking through the scope more comfortable, especially when aiming the telescope toward the zenith.
