Sonnet Upgrade for Mac Pro 5,1

Needed a reliable upgrade card for my Mac Pro. Read many reviews that pointed me to the Sonnet 3.0 card. The reviews were correct. Plug and play? no issues. Glad I chose the Sonnet.

Good card, just needed a haircut

I bought this to use mostly with the OWC USB-C Drive Dock. First thing out of the box, I swapped the full-height bracket to the included half-height one since I am using a SFF case. The brackets themselves are super high quality, heavy, sturdy, and really beautifully made. Which I never thought I would say about a PCI slot bracket. The card itself seems high quality for the most part. There are cheaper options available but I went with Sonnet because I need the best reliability I can get, and also hoping that if driver or firmware updates are ever needed, I will have a better chance of getting them from Sonnet than a generic Amazon brand. My one gripe with the card physically is that the top of it is rough and has loose strands of fiberglass-looking PCB material hanging off. A bit janky for something priced 2-3x higher than the competition. It installed easily and was recognized immediately by Windows 10. No issues with USB plug clearance on my PC.

Better than E-Sata

Tried e-sata, but was unreliable in my 5,1 MacPro. This is fast and seems to be reliable in the first few days of operation and the price was worth the wait. As others have said, the USB-C connectors do not seat fully due to interference with the case, but that does not seem to affect the performance nor reliability.

Express Card

I have one of the last Macintoshes that came with USB 2.0 ports. In the 5+ years since I bought the computer, USB 3.0 has become a standard for external devices, especially hard drives. The Sonnet PCI Express card installed easily and gave me 4 USB 3.0 ports, each of which now has a 4TB or 5TB hard drive connected.

Love it!!

Love it!! Works as advertised!! Plug and play. Much faster then what I was using. ( a 3.0 hub). Would recommend to anyone. My configuration: latest version of El Capitan, CCC for backups & Time Machine, without a hitch.
