Good camera, but not quite a Leica

The D Lux 5 is a fine small sensor camera - lots of features, good image quality, small enough to be an always with you camera. I use it as such, a camera to always be with me. It is very adjustable and can be tailored to produce most any kind of image you want. But....a Leica? Sort of, since it is common knowledge that it is in reality a rebadged Panasonic. It goes against the Leica philosophy of simplicity, and as near as I can tell The main Leica features are the lens and a slightly different tone curve. It can be tuned to your liking and it can be made to replicate the "Leica look" pretty closely (I own and use a Leica X2 as well as the D Lux5). It really has no glaring faults. I have printed files from it up to 11 x 14 and have been very satisfied. My main complaint is that the RAW files are Panasonic instead of the usual Leica DNG ones that can be imported directly into Photoshop.

VERY NICE LITTLE CAMERA

Bought this camera for my wife. Took some test shots, wow IQ is just sooooooo incredibly good , couldn't beleive it. I'm very happy with this camera. You buy this camera for your wife, she will loves it. This little camera will never can out perform my Canon 5d mk2, but it's good enough to carry it around every where you go and takes some nice pictures. Build quality is top notch. It's a Leica, shooting with a style.

Excellent camera

I bought the D-Lux 5 because I developed hand tremors and didn't want to always carry my Nikon D200. Using other point and shoot cameras I was down to 1 in 5 photos. The Leica has exceeded my expectations, in fact I'm almost blown away by the image quality in a camera this small. I've tested it up to iso 3200 (definitely "grainy" but still usable. Have found that the combination of iso 400 and f3.5 works very well if my hand shakes, esp. if I shoot a burst. Depth of field at f3.5 is exceptional. The wide angle + 16:9 format is great and the full telephoto is good for people shooting. In short, I think I've gained another 5 years of photography with this purchase, when I was just about to give it up. Very pleased with the camera and the service from Adorama. FYI, I purchased the Panasonic viewfinder which works fine and helped me achieve a steadier shooting platform, and just purchased the grip accessory for the same purpose. Finally, the bundled lightroom software is excellent and work the $$$.

GREAT...But I'm worried...

RECOMMENDATION WITH RESERVATION. I use this for EVERYTHING. For the past three years I have used a D-Lux 3 for everything and have been enchanted (understanding its inherent limitation--i.e. small processor) and have gotten astounding results, including large exhibition prints. After reading a professional review, I decided that the 5 sounded great. It is, in every respect, EXCEPT..., I am worried that mine is defective because the images do not seem as sharp. I hope it can be fixed. So my recommendation is without reservation..., unless it cannot be fixed. If that's the case..., I don't know what I'll do. So this is a cautionary. I wish I could file a follow-up report later.
