NIKON L840 - RED

When I buy, last NIKON L-840 RED, in the "MACRO-MICRO" tech store in my city, I was assured that I' bought average photo camera, but at the first photography - love is in the air! The NIKON L840, with a careful MANUAL treatment (not only, and always AUTO-matic action!), is more than just a - COOLPIX! His ZOOM impress me much, and ability to shot MACRO photography at HQ, with a built in 16th megapixels, at HQ resolution. Also he is perfect for family shots in a daylight, sunshine, and with a minimum postprocessing in the Photoshop! Just only a signature! Buit in ND FILTERS,has manual possibilities to do Exposure Values, minus or plus, VIVID COLOURS of yours shots (but YOU must trigger the buttons up and down!!), and Tonality in the COLD or WARM colours, depends on what you are shoting. In the store told me that is that model "not good for the NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY", but thats NOT THRUE! I shot excellent night photography at the summer in the city of SPLIT(in Dalmatia/Croatia/in Europe).I still use them. The BEST IS FOR SOTING PORTRAITS.Has a built in DREAMY SOFT photography sensor, in the end softness, and crisp photography buyed me.

Great for a first timer

I bought this last minute before Christmas in 2015 and it is also my first "really nice" camera since 35mm film was still a thing (I have had digital cameras just you basic little 1" thick point and click, idiot proof things), and I have to say that it has been wonderful. Even a year later I am still learning how to use some of the settings (there are a lot of shot settings after all) and I thoroughly enjoy using it every single time I pick it up. It is easy to use when it comes to switching between shot settings and it takes amazing photos of sun rises and sun sets. This has been a great choice for myself, and I am definitely the epitome of an amateur and am not sure if I think I will be pursuing a future in photography, but if I ever did, this would have been the perfect choice for a first camera. It is a gateway into learning to use different shot settings, different light settings, distance and closeness, among other aspects and I am soooooo incredibly glad I bought it.

Not Again

Totally dissatisfied. Slow focus. Sports setting images are blurry. Settings difficult to manipulate. Never use any more. Wish I could go back and make a different choice.

Good for Price

This is a good camera for the price. Bought for a trip to New England foliage tour. With my limited use before hand of this camera I'll just get to the pro's and cons discovered. Pro's: Good vibration control on zoom. If you can manage to reduce movement you can get a pretty decent shot of far off objects with good detail with little to no blur (depends on how much coffee you drank prior, lol). There's really no need for the flash in most low light conditions, I took some shots of the moon over the ocean and the detail of the moons reflection in the water is spectacular. Aim and shoot readiness, the basic settings will work in most conditions so don't need to be a pro camera buff to get a nice shot. Good red-eye reduction too. Menus easy to navigate, very intuitive. Haven't used the wifi all that much but it recognizes my router and I can connect to it. Grip is perfect, can hold camera easily and comfortably while shooting. Cons: Hazy pictures in overcast conditions. Changed white balance to cloudy day but it didn't improve much, just a little brighter.. While the vibration control is good forget about shots taken from a car, not that I expect close up images to be clear but far off objects also blurry. Even the tiniest bit of glare off a glass surface is readily noticeable. I'm not a camera pro and I didn't get to use this one much before traveling so learned on the go but still nothing I checked out in the menus offered anything I could use to correct this like "action-mode" found on other similar cameras. Batteries go from 100% to near dead. I carry extras but needed to change batteries when I didn't think I had to. Audio not very good. Microphones easily distorted by even a little higher ambient noise rising up in background. Overall not a bad camera for the price. Did the job pretty much, got some very nice shots of Fall color but if I were to do it again I might move up to a better camera.

Impressive Camera

By far the best digital camera I have purchased. Bought it mainly for the zoom ability, but the full features and ease of use make this an outstanding deal. The zoom is quite powerful but I was also impressed with the macro ability, especially the focus. The controls are quite intuitive and anyone that has used a digital camera in the past should have no problems figuring them out. Beginners should have no problems taking good quality photos. Pros may find the settings a little limited, but then again, this is NOT a DSLR. That being said, the versatility of the camera is still quite impressive! I haven't shot much video with it yet, but what I have taken has been HD quality and very sharp. Good color and acceptable sound as well. All in all, I am very happy with this camera!

Exhilarating Zoom and Low Light capabilit

I purchased this camera a year ago in my fav color....purple. I planned to use it as a back up to my Nikon 5300 DSLR camera. However, this camera has such awesome features (including the video) that it has all but replaced my bulky, multi-lens DSLR. The color, clarity and zoom on this camera allow me to point and shoot professional quality photos for my Travel/Tour company. Thanks Nikon for this awesome product!!!

Not Happy

I bought it so I can get shots of my daughter barrel racing...No matter what setting I use, every sport shot comes out blurry. And even some still shots are blurry if the subject moves at all.

Great camera for the price

Great camera for the price! Lasts quite awhile on rechargeable batteries. (Purchases separately.) Love the zoom! The best zoomed in pics are taken while the camera is on a tripod, otherwise, there is a lot of shake. Still figuring out all the features, but so far, I love it! The pics I've attached are the moon and the different built in color filters and a picture of the OKC Thunder bench, taken from the very, very TOP row of the stadium on the opposite side!

The Coolpix L840 camera is brand new and I loved using it

The Coolpix L840 camera is brand new and I loved using it but am I to understand there is NO DC charger that comes with the camera that is extra??? All the cameras I owned before came with a DC charger. Did I not get the whole package. I'm very disappointed to think I have to go spend MORE money on this camera just to keep it charged. I don't think that is far to NOT include a NECESSARY charger. Or did I miss something in the present?????

Excellent 1st camera for my 10-yr old granddaughter

My 10-year old granddaughter was able to quickly start using this camera. She liked the bright red color and the large view screen. I helped her insert the batteries and a memory card, and set the basic settings (time & date, ASA, etc.). I also showed her how to use the zoom. Once I did that for her, she was off & running. Lots of value features packaged in this camera, and a good size for portability.

Good Photos, has a learning curve, video has some issues

Got this at Costco. Overall a simple camera to start but you only get mediocre images using the automated features. I've had problems with color halos and off axis focus... until I figured out how to use the built-in portrait modes and take it out of full auto. The manual is pretty much next to useless, this thing needs a serious user guide with examples, but what do you want for a $200-$300 camera? Zoom is awesome, I rarely need to get it really out there and when you do, you need a tripod. No joke. Video is where it hurts. I cannot get the full time Auto-Focus to actually focus well if it goes out of focus. It will hunt and search for focus (in the wrong direction) for up to 20 seconds before it figures out the distance. If you are doing live video, this is a really bad trait. If you are able to set up things ahead of time and get focal distances dialed in, set up with a one time focus shot and leave it. I'm not sure how this got past Nikon QC, I expect better of them. Our older pocket Coolpix doesn't have this problem. Not sure why this top of the line model does. No firmware update yet either. I'd recommend waiting for about 4 months before getting one of these, maybe it will be fixed later.

Had higher expectation based on reviews I read

The camera has an incredible amount of features which is why I chose it. Most of the reviews were very glowing and I couldn't wait to toss the old point and shoot. Glad I didn't, as i might keep using it. This camera is having focus issues, even when the VR is turned on. Auto focus is very slow and half the pictures I take look great in the LCD screen, and when I fully depress the button, about half of the pics go slightly out of focus and then have to be deleted. Portraits, landscaping, close-ups, it doesn't seem to matter. The ones that do turn out are great. Even though it is a point and shoot I expect most of my pictures to turn out decent, especially when the camera is a 16MP with a great zoom and tons of settings. I guess my expectation were too high. I will have to keep saving up for a DSLR.

Great Value for a Point-and-Shoot Camera

I put this camera through its paces in a trip through Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Glacier, Devil's Tower, Mt. Rushmore, Badlands and more. On the drive, the camera did an impressive job of taking photos from the moving car. It's shutter speed was fast enough to freeze the motion of roadside objects while taking crisp images of distant objects. Most of the time I just let the camera choose the conditions and shot without making any adjustments. The most frequent adjustment I used was the exposure compensation when I needed to adjust for scenes with a high contrast between light and dark areas. The 38X zoom was fantastic, and I was able to take some amazing close-ups of wildlife, panoramas, and even some astronomical pictures. The camera booted up quickly and woke up from standby almost instantly. The battery life was remarkable. I used high-end lithium batteries and the first set lasted for over a week through days where I was taking over 100 pictures a day and several minutes of video. One quibble is that the on-screen battery indicator never showed less than 100% battery power over the life of the batteries. The only indication I saw for low battery was when the camera failed to turn on. I did some experimentation with night photography and was able to get the camera to take some shots at night using only moon and ambient lighting. The manual doesn't say it anywhere I can find, but apparently the longest exposure the camera will take is 1 second. That was long enough to get some spooky images in full moonlight conditions, and even capture some bright stars in the picture. The only problem I have with the camera is the auto-focus. When shooting distant objects the camera frequently refused to focus at infinity. I tried to take nighttime photos of bright stars and planets, and the camera simply couldn't figure out to focus at infinity. Sometimes I'd get a shot framed and got the camera to focus with the half-depressed shutter button only when I actually tripped the shutter the camera would cycle through near to distant focus and then finally decide to take the shot when the image was not quite focused. This is the reason for the four-star review. If the camera's brain can't find the focus there should be a mode setting for forced focus at infinity. Another missing feature is a fill-in flash when taking indoor pictures with brightly-lit backgrounds. The video quality is excellent. I'm reviewing video clips on my 27" monitor at home, and the picture quality is like you are right in the scene. Once again the camera's auto-focus leaves something to be desired in keeping the focus adjusted when zooming in and out. Sometimes the focus simply gives up and keeps on recording an out-of-focus scene and never manages to find the focus. I found it was best to take zooming slowly and give the camera plenty of time to make small adjustments. All told, anyone should be able to take stunning photos with this camera with nothing more than point-and-shoot technique. A high-end amateur may get frustrated with the camera's lack of much user control and occasional focusing issues, but for the money this camera's quality is undeniable.

Worst camera I have ever owned

This is the worst camera I have ever owned or even used. The 'auto' feature doesn't work very well. It will show a picture as perfect in the display, but the taken picture is all out of focus. It won't focus on 2 things (like my 2 kittens) that are right next to each other. One will be in focus, the other won't. I doubt I will ever buy another Nikon camera.

I fell in love right away with this beautiful, red, camera! I bought it, took it home, and 10 minutes later (after reading the manual, and downloading app to transfer pix through wiFi) I was taking outstanding, no, AMAZING pictures! All point and shoot! Best decision I've made in a long time!

Awesome, just Point and Shoot

I love this camera. I removed it from the box and began using it instantly. The photos are great and I love the ability to move the screen. I can view my photos in the sun and if I'm taking a photo near the ground, I can angle the screen to assist with viewing. The built in Wi-Fi make sharing a photo extremely easy and quick. After seeing my photos, two friends have purchased this affordable camera.

Great Camera for the price

Bought it and used it once at my grandsons Little League game, and was so impressed! Still need to figure some things out but the picture and video quality at almost full Zoom was incredible. I couldn't get the WiFi working yet though. I am on old 35mm SLR guy so I'm a little picky about picture quality, this camera is a steal for the quality, features and price.

STATE OF THE ART 38x zoom with real value equal to ten thousand dollars in optical range in professional lens.I think every home deserves a nikon L840 for the price fabulous! POINT AND SHOOT AT ITS BEST! Keep it in the cupboard by your glasses or mugs ready to go. Takes aa batteries that last hundreds of shots always ready to go no waiting for phone to recharge. Low price under 200 all can use 3 year old just show them how to 90 year old. Better than 8 single use cameras with prints.Easy,Fun,Wonderful Images. You deserve a L840 for your family's images.

I love it

I love it other then certain pictures do have to be taken twice if you don't hold the button to take the picture half way and just shoot it is blurry. And frustrated with the whole wi-fi thing there is no wi-fi set up anything on it at all there is a eye-fi upload whatever that means its on but does nothing. Other wise I do love it.

Great Camera

I have had this for about 2 weeks. My first big switch from my old film camera. This is a great value, takes awesome pics and video. Lots of features, most I am still learning. Really like to hook my phone to it, I do a lot of pics on the mono-pod above everyone's head and it is nice to have remote access to shoot pics & video without lowering the stick. NFC and WIFI are great, able to move pics to my phone....love this camera, easy on the batteries too...still on my first set.

Great Camera

By Baloo

I have had this for about 2 weeks. My first big switch from my old film camera. This is a great value, takes awesome pics and video. Lots of features, most I am still learning. Really like to hook my phone to it, I do a lot of pics on the mono-pod above everyone's head and it is nice to have remote access to shoot pics & video without lowering the stick. NFC and WIFI are great, able to move pics to my phone....love this camera, easy on the batteries too...still on my first set.

Awesome, just Point and Shoot

By ShootingStar

I love this camera. I removed it from the box and began using it instantly. The photos are great and I love the ability to move the screen. I can view my photos in the sun and if I'm taking a photo near the ground, I can angle the screen to assist with viewing. The built in Wi-Fi make sharing a photo extremely easy and quick. After seeing my photos, two friends have purchased this affordable camera.

Zoom in and catch a great close-up, then send your image directly to your compatible smartphone to share the photo before the night is even over. Flip out the high-resolution tilting LCD screen, take a low-angle macro shot of a delicious meal and post it online before you even take your first bite. And forget about blurry photos and shaky videos-the COOLPIX L840's compact grip-style design and Vibration Reduction (VR) helps keep your photos sharp and your videos steady, even in low light. Start sharing extraordinary views of your extraordinary life.

38x optical zoom, 76x Dynamic Fine Zoom
Zoom in with the power of a 38x optical zoom telephoto NIKKOR glass lens and capture beautiful close-ups of faraway action. For added reach, zoom farther with the 76x Dynamic Fine Zoom, an enhanced digital zoom function that effectively doubles your reach. If you lose your subject while zoomed in, press the Snap-Back Zoom button for a quick zoomed out view. Find your subject again and release the button-the COOLPIX L840 will zoom right back in. A comfortable grip makes it easy to hold the COOLPIX L840 steady, but Vibration Reduction (VR) takes care of even the smallest camera shake for sharper photos and steadier videos.
