Another Fine Leica M Lens

As with many Leica M photographers, I was debating between the 35mm f/1.4 and the 28mm f/2.0.....a little more speed vs. a little more in the frame. After reading reviews from all over on both lenses, it seems to come down to this: Both are exceptionally fine lenses and you really can't go wrong either way. Having previously owned a Leica 35mm f/1.4, I knew what a great lens it is. However, my experience with landscape photography led me to prefer the additional breadth that the 28mm lens captures. I would, in fact, have considered an even wider lens but prefer not to have to use an accessory viewfinder. As with all things Leica, the watchwords are small and light. This is in marked contrast to my Nikon DSLR equipment (which, by the way, I also love very much). Initially, I had some concern vis-à-vis the lens and lenshood obstructing the finder, but the lenshood cutout almost completely negates that issue for me. The real trick for me has involved understanding how WIDE the 28mm image is in the M finder -- essentially ALL of the area in the finder is covered by the 28mm lens.

Bringing It All Together

My 28 Summicron lets me integrate the near and the far. With it I make images that juxtapose people and things. The inclusiveness of the wide angle is just what I need to make visual statements about the world around me.

Great landscape lens

I use this lens of landscape and street photography. It is fast and has great color rendition. My pro friends are in love with this lens too because of that hard to define feeling of an unforgettable three D picture. It is not cheap but lives up to the best of leica lens.

The 28 mm f/2.0 SUMMICRON-M ASPH. is the high-speed addition to the 28 mm f/2.8 ELMARIT-M. Its strengths become especially obvious in poor lighting, such as at dusk or in poorly lit interiors where the lens aperture has to be opened as wide as possible to take an atmospheric free-hand shot without using a flash. In order to retain the out-standing performance of the 28 mm f/2.8 ELMARIT-M even at higher speed, the constructive effort for the 28 mm f/2.0 SUMMI-CRON-M ASPH. had to be increased considerably. Thanks to a sophisticated optical formula, in which special types of glass and an aspherical surface were used, the Leica designers succeeded in surpassing the excellent performance of the 28 mm f/2.8 ELMARIT-M. And, although the 28 mm f/2.0 SUMMICRON-M ASPH. is one f-stop faster than the 28 mm f/2.8 ELMARIT-M, the dimensions and the weight are almost identical.
