Amazing

Amazing details and color rendition. Solid feel and very portable for a medium format camera! App did not work as well as on the tutorial but could be my inexperience in linking it. Not for those folks who expect this camera to work as a fast as a DSLR. Hope this help.

Pleased in SG, BC and NC.

I love the price, (at about a third of the price of the big H5Ds), and I love the fact that it is compact enough to be portable. I would not be able to do travel photography with a big studio camera tethered to a computer.

Amazing

This lightweight, portable medium format camera meets my high expectations. Obviously it is very sharp. But it functions every bit as well as a Nikon but with superior sharpness and tone.

This is an amazing camera

This is an amazing camera. It is incredibly solid, with a wonderful design, it feels great to hold and carry around you don't want to let go of it once you got it. The buttons and the dials are very strategically located . The touch screen is amazingly functional and easy to use. If you are a medium format user this camera opens up a whole new experience and you'll find this camera very easy to use and quite functional. If you are a full frame BS of our user you may be disappointed but you have to understand that this is a totally different form of photography. I am still working on it and working with it and I will be reviewing this camera on lightbrushphotos.com

Hope it develops into something amazing!

Myself: Avid traveler and landscape photographer, with semi-regular sales. Systems: Hasselblad V, Mamiya 7, Canon 6D, Fuji X-Pro2. My favorite system ever is the Hasselblad V shooting film, both color and B&W. Both the V and Mamiya 7 are somewhat arduous to travel with, so I've hoped for many years that a company would produce a truly compact medium format digital model. Hasselblad certainly nailed the form factor with the X1D. It's marvelous in hand, beautifully balanced, and the button and menu layouts are some of the best I've used. But it certainly has its problems. First, and most vexing, is the utterly random blackout period between shots, sometimes as little as 1/4 second, sometimes 4 or 5, with the finder displaying a practically mocking digital countdown. Given my previous film systems, slowness doesn't particularly bother me, but the total lack of consistency and predictability became infuriating. Sony and Fuji systems are almost flawless in this regard, and it seems ridiculous that Hasselblad could be so far behind the curve. Second, the internal wifi doesn't work? Come on, Hasselblad, cameras costing a fraction of this one have had flawless wifi for years. The camera came with a registration certificate that will get you a free hotshoe wifi unit, as way of salve. Lovely. Enlarging the form of what's supposed to be compact and sleek because somehow they screwed up the internals? What else may be amiss? At this price point, it's understandably worrisome. My third issue is not Hasselblad's fault, but inherent in this particular sensor, which is also used in a number of other systems. I compared files side-by-side with my friend's Canon 5DSR, and was simply not impressed. Don't misunderstand me, it's a marvelous sensor, and there is unquestionably lovely tonality and detail to be had, especially at the far reaches of the spectrum, but just not enough difference, for me, to justify the cost. The body plus 45 and 90 lenses pushes the 15k mark, while a comparable 5DSR setup costs one-third of that. I'm sure that for certain applications other users will be pleased, but at that price point I need to be really enthralled. Hence, I returned the system. I truly hope that through future updates the X1D blossoms into what it's striving to be, but I'd rather not be the Guinea pig.

Absolutely great

My new X1D may be the world's first mirrorless medium format digital camera, but I think it might also be the world's best camera. What a great size, fabulous controls, and superb construction! I look at it every day, even when not taking pictures. I am anxious to start to use it on a regular basis, and am also learning to use the Phocus software supplied by Hasselblad. I have three older film Hasselblads, and am happy to add this to the collection. Long live the 'Blad!

Incredible piece of kit.

Replaced my Pentax 645Z with this to achieve some portablility with my MF camera. While you came tell it has room for improvement, the truth is the images are stellar and the camera is a joy to use. Wonderful ergonomics. Simple controls. Beautiful display. A couple of quirks I expect will be fixed in firmware, and the Phocus software is pretty lame, but just loving the camera overall.

4.5 stars Image quality is the star

4.5 stars. Likes: 16bit, tonal range, EVF/Live View, touch display, size! DisLikes: buggy at times, heat from uses. Bugs can get worked out in firmware. More lens and faster lens. Maybe AF support for X to H lens adapter would be great.

Images are great but...

All that has been said about the quality of the images out of this camera is true but... I cannot get it to function with the Nikon SB-700 flash. I tried all I can think of including just using spot metering. I guess I'll just use it without a flash.

An excellent camera

Compared to my previous medium format digital camera this is surprisingly light and compact. The image quality is superb from this well known 50MP sensor, with wide dynamic range and excellent color rendition. The camera menus are very user friendly and easy to see on the rear screen. It is not a suitable camera for action photography and some may find the autofocus less sophisticated than for DSLR’s. I found it accurate and very acceptable for my needs. An excellent camera.

Hasselblad X1D

The image quality is outstanding! Presently there are only a few dedicated lenses that are available and other accessories, like a camera case have not even hit the market as of March 27, 2017!

A medium format game-changer

The Hasselblad X1D is an extremely compact 50 MP medium format camera. It is beautifully designed, concentrating on the photography essentials. The iPhone-like interface on the rear screen is outstanding. It has an electronic viewfinder which is more than acceptable in use. The camera is capable of producing outstanding images. As a medium format digital user, I work quite slowly, almost exclusively on a tripod. I use the self timer for shutter actuation. I also have the camera in manual focus mode and use the back button autofocus for initial focusing then adjust manually. The focus peaking introduced with the latest firmware is really good. The dynamic range of this camera is probably the best I have seen ( compared with my Nikon D810 and the Mamiya Leaf Credo with the CCD sensor). Exposing for highlights and then doing shadow recovery creates excellent images even under the most arduous lighting conditions. Its high ISO performance is also excellent although I usually use base (100) ISO for maximum dynamic range. Coupled with the Phocus software, at least for initial image processing produces breathtaking image quality. Highly recommended for my style of photography. This is not an action camera but others have found the camera fine for hand held street photography.

Create To Inspire

Handmade in Sweden, the X1D combines Scandinavian sensibility with beautiful performance. Small enough to take anywhere, powerful enough to capture anything.

Hasselblad

This is X1D

At less than half the weight of a conventional digital medium format camera, the mirrorless X1D is a game changer in the world of photography.
Inspired by our iconic design heritage, the camera is ergonomic and compact, offering a handling experience unlike any other.

Hasselblad X1D

High-Resolution LCD

The X1D’s high-resolution rear LCD offers touch control for all aspects of the camera’s features. The elegant icon-based user interface speeds access to customisation options along with intuitive playback functions such as swipe and pinch to zoom. The camera also boasts a 2.4 MP electronic viewfinder for bright, crisp viewing even under difficult lighting conditions.

High-Resolution LCD

Wider View

By opting for a mirrorless design, we were able to take our 50MP CMOS sensor and pack it into a footprint smaller than most full frame 35mm cameras. For the very first time, photographers have a camera that is no larger than a small format rangefinder, but offers the quality that only Hasselblad medium format can give.

New Lens Range

To enhance the entirely new camera design we have produced a new range of autofocus lenses specifically engineered to match the high resolution capability of the X1D. The superb new XCD lenses deliver edge-to-edge sharpness in a compact form to elegantly match the slim build of the body. Existing H System users also have the flexibility to use their existing lenses with the X1D by the way of an optional adapter.

Compact Mirrorless Body Design
The Hasselblad X1D is the world's first mirrorless digital medium format camera. Weighing less than half of a conventional MF camera and crafted from quality durable materials, it takes design inspiration from the original V System. Weather and dust sealed to stand up to challenging conditions, delivering the revered image quality Hasselblad has pioneered since 1941.

• The use of the highest quality CMOS sensors available ensuring wide dynamic range, vivid colors and high resolution.
• A unique high performance lens line with the addition of individual and accurate lens enhancement corrections.
• HNCS - Hasselblad Natural Color Solution which delivers true and accurate colors.
• Hasselblad Phocus software - The processing engine which ensures the image quality based on advanced proprietary algorithms.

Its mirrorless body design and central lens shutter allows shooting noise to be kept very low allowing image capture without disturbing your subject.

Designed to be the smallest and lightest mirrorless digital medium format camera possible, whilst still maintaining Hasselblad's very high build and image quality standards, the result is barely larger than smaller format mirrorless cameras.

Now you can have the portability and convenience of a smaller format camera coupled with the medium format image quality you have dreamed of.

Enhanced Connectivity
The X1D is equipped with a host of enhanced connectivity options. These include:

Dual Card Slots
The X1D has dual SD media card slots to maximize storage options and flexibility. This type of media card is an industry standard with very good data transfer rates and wide ranging compatibility with existing card readers.

Storage options include: Save captures to card 1, then when it is full use card 2
Future firmware updates will implement additional options:
Save captures to both cards simultaneously as a backup
Save RAW captures to card 1 and JPEG captures to card 2

USB 3.0 Type-C Connector
A USB 3.0 Type-C connector allows the user to connect to their chosen computer system without the need to use an adapter. It also delivers very fast transfer rates of more than five times that of Firewire, ensuring tethered liveview or stills capture is an experience to be enjoyed.

Mini HDMI & Audio I/O ports
The addition of a mini HDMI port along with the associated Input/Output ports enables videographers to display the video feed on a larger external monitor for audio and video files.

Wi-Fi & GPS
Wi-Fi is included as standard supporting b,g,n and ac standards on both 2.4 and 5Ghz where permitted. This allows previews of the captured images to be viewed on an iOS device along with remote camera control and a 30fps liveview feed.

GPS is also included as a standard feature enabling geotagging of your images at capture.

High Resolution Rear Touch Display
The new 3.0" rear display boasts touch capability along with user customization options including assigning nine favorite functions to touch buttons. The resolution is 920K dots and the image display performance delivers clear, color accurate image reviews and high performance Liveview. The new smartphone style, icon based UI speeds access to even little used functions ensuring full use of the camera's capabilities.

High Resolution Electronic Viewfinder
The X1D is equipped with a 2.36MP electronic viewfinder. The display has a fast refresh rate, wide contrast range (230:1) and 24-bit color output delivering a crisp, accurate representation of the capture area. The information within the viewfinder displays a wide range of information including aperture, shutter speed, shots remaining and exposure level. The eyestart sensor built in to the eye cup automatically switches the display from the rear screen as you place your eye to the viewfinder.

The viewfinder display adjusts to show the correct image area for the chosen capture ratio with unused areas blacked out.

The X1D offers 3 custom settings on the mode dial that allows the user to customize the camera settings. For example, you can set how the AF should work, which exposure mode should be used and what ISO setting should be used for a particular assignment. This way you can easily switch between certain behaviors during a shoot.

50MP CMOS Sensor
The X1D ships with the tried and tested 50MP CMOS sensor. The 44 x 33mm chip offers a considerable improvement in image capture quality compared with full frame and other smaller sensor formats. To allow photographers using this sensor to extract the maximum image quality available the sensor is capable of delivering up to 14 stops of dynamic range. Coupled with the extended shutter speed and ISO range, this sensor is capable of recording breathtaking detail even in poor lighting conditions.

Hasselblad X System Lens Range
The Hasselblad XCD lenses are some of the finest optics available on the market today. These lenses, which are all designed in Sweden, have all gone through a stringent development, testing and production process to ensure they satisfy the demands of high end mirrorless digital capture, and high resolution sensors. Additionally an adapter is available to allow the mounting of HC & HCD lenses.

The Hasselblad Central Lens Shutter
While the principal of a central, or leaf shutter is very simple, designing one which is fast, accurate, durable and energy efficient is a great challenge. The shutter units are built at Hasselblad's Sweden factory where they control each step of the manufacturing process and maintain the utmost quality, shot after shot.

For a leaf shutter to be effective it must accelerate to its open position as quickly as possible and also close quickly and reliably, using minimal power and without causing damage to the blades. This design has many advantages:

• Flash sync at all shutter speeds, up to 1/2000th second.
• No energy is required to hold the shutter in an open or closed state as the powerful neodymium magnets perform this function.
• The acceleration speed of the leaf blades is very high, so the time taken for the blades to fully open and close is minimal.
• Calibration of shutter speeds is not dependent on mechanics or springs and can be set extremely accurately.
• The shutter is incredibly durable. Working with test exposures of up to 1/1000th second we have seen extremely high life cycles, well beyond the existing service limit of 1,000,000 exposures.
• The shutter is in a 'ready' state at all times so does not need to be 'cocked'.
• Virtually no vibration for longer exposures.

Phocus
The simplest way of processing your Hasselblad RAW files, ensuring the best corrections and extraction of the finest detail possible.

In conjunction with the release of the X1D camera system, Hasselblad's raw conversion software has been further enhanced with additional tools. Perspective adjustment has been added for converging vertical corrections to complement the adjustment layers added in version 3.0. Lens corrections for the X system lens range including those for HC/HCD lenses on the X1D have been added to the already extensive range available.

HD Video Capture
The X1D is capable of capturing HD (2K) video at 25 fps.

You are able to export your movie captures as H.264 files (Mpeg) and play them back in Phocus or other compatible software.

Coupled with the HDMI and audio facilities on the new camera, the capture of high quality video output is simplicity itself.

Natural Colors
While image color and tonality is somewhat subjective, the tones displayed in an image are controlled by the following:
• Pixel size and sensitivity (Dynamic range)
• Number of bits per color channel in the A/D conversion process
• Color profile applied to the resulting image data

For serious users who demand the utmost color accuracy the Hasselblad Natural Color Solution (HNCS) was developed. The system delivers the best possible natural colors from the selected chip without having to select from multiple presets.

The HNCS delivers smoother tonal transitions and a more analog film like image quality straight out of the camera, thanks to its 16-bit color depth, compared to the majority of smaller DSLR sensors.
