I was looking for the Canon 580Ex but the cost was a little prohibitive and then I found this flash with virtually the same features. And I love the ease of use. And its versatily.

With all the electronic in the Rebel XT, I was hesitant to believe that this 3rd party flash could be as automatic as advertised. I got it out of the box and put it through the paces, direct light in mixed conditions, shooting into a bright area with harsh shadows, direct flash, bounce light and they all turned out perfect. Simply, an amazing piece of equipment.

A good flash for the money. I like the option of wireless firing off camera.

This Flash never worked when I was taking pictures. When I took it off the camara to check why, it worked. I didn't like it at all

It's big but it works. If you can't afford a SB 600, this would be ok. I finally switched to SB-800 and would never go back.

I bought this for D100 and have to buy SB800 later after trial. Burned 2 time because used battery pack (They don't have the mark and can be plug in either way).

The EF500 is a viable alternative to the Canon 550EX at a fraction of the cost. The EF500 is well-built and has a relatively quick recycle time. Occaisionally in extreme situations it can provide some inconsistent results - however using the FE lock function corrects this and provides good, consistent results. This is a great addition to your camera bag.

I was told this product is better than the top of the line Canon flash, but to my dismay I feel the 580ex would be a better product. The flap that holds the batteries in is very weak and it seems like it wants to fall off. The flash gives great lighting and the controls are amazing, but it eats batteries more than the Canon flashes do.

Electronic Flash EF-500 DG SUPER is designed to work with both AF 35mm SLR and Digital SLR cameras of popular manufacturers, for advanced flash photography. It has a maximum guide number of 165 in feet or 50 in meter at 105mm focal length (ISO 100). The projection angle of the flashlight is set automatically to match the lens' focal length ranging from 28mm wide-angle to 105mm medium-telephoto. It also incorporates a built-in diffuser that expands the angle of illumination down to that of 17mm lens.
It enables full automatic flash photography by TTL automatic flash exposure control. It includes S-TTL flash photography for Sigma, 3-D multi-sensor balanced fill flash function and D-TTL flash photography for Nikon, E-TTL flash photography for Canon, ADI flash photography and P-TTL flash photography for Minolta.
For bounce flash it can be tilted 90° upwards and 7° downward for close-ups. Also it can be swiveled 180° to the left and 90° to the right. It incorporates "modeling flash" mode to provide proper light distribution to check the shadow of the subject. The multi pulse flash features enable reduced power setting from 1/4 to 1/128 in 6 steps and the pulse frequency of the flash can be set from 1Hz to 199Hz. EF-500 DG SUPER incorporates wireless TTL flash photography, slave flash photography, and FP flash photography (synchronized with high shutter speeds). In addition, manual flash also can be set at 8 output power levels. The covering focal length of the flashlight can be seen on the LCD panel, and a flash ready signal can be seen in the viewfinder. The EF-500 DG SUPER also incorporates auto power off system.
