I bought this for my daughter who is starting to get into photography. She's made some nice photos with it. Does hunt in low light as most lenses of this type tend to due to aperture being 4-5.6.

Havn't really had a chance to explore this lens like I would like to yet, but so far, seems like a really good buy.

Great Zoom, sharp pics, very fast and accurate. Good for distance objects and in-motion subjects. I definitely recommend it!!!

This lens is good value for the money. It works well as the main lens when in large rooms, buildings, or outside. If it had a lower F-stop it would get a 5 out of 5 Stars.

This is the lens you want to buy for a D40, in addition to the stock 18-55. The lens is just as light as the 18-55 but has more magnification and will help you take shots that the stock lens will not make. It focuses close enough for flower and large insect / creature photography, although it won't qualify as a macro. My wife likes this lens for that, and she would grab the D40 with this 55-200 even if there was a D70 with a 105 macro laying next to it: the light weight, easy handling and ample depth of field for flower photography make it so much more enjoyable. This lens has a very pleasant bokeh, although it would not win against lenses that cost four times as much. In my opinion, the 55-200 has better bokeh (rendition of the out of focus areas) than the 18-200, which I was tempted by after I bought the 55-200. When I handled the 18-200 and looked at some sample pictures, I kept the 55-200 and 18-55, even though there is more hassle to change them around. The 18-200 is so much heavier than either one of these that having it on the front of the D40 just took away the best part of the D40, its incredibly light weight and easy handling. I would recommend this lens as a lightweight, daylight lens for travel and everyday photography for small DSLRs like D40. Happy shooting!

Don't be put off by the price; this is a solid lens. I have been using this lens exclusively for my kids sports and have been getting some great pictures. It's lightweight, focuses quickly, is sharp and is a work horse. This lens is a must-have.

This lens is great for sports shots and distance but not close up! Perfect for what I needed

This is a great lens, gets nice and close to the subject at 200mm and creates beautiful bokeh, throwing out the background a lot at 200mm. It's very sharp and pretty fast. If you consider the non-VR version, I'd definitely pay the extra to get the VR since the f-stop isn't that low and it could cause problems at higher zooms. I've found the VR very helpful. The casing is not the strongest since it's plastic and the focus is a bit slow, but it's nothing major. Overall a really good lens to compliment the 18-55 kit lens.

This lens is fantastic for the money. I'm sure it is not as durable as the much more expensive Nikon lenses. I am very careful with my equipment and I hope to get lots of use from this very sharp lens.

Nice match to the 18-55 kitlens of my D40. The VR function is great, especially when targetting the imiga in the viewer is much more stable.

this is my first VR lense from nikon, and i will never use anything else from now on. excellent for weddings, especially if you cannot get right close the the alter, and when the wedding processional comes into the church, this lense is the best i have ever used for telephoto purposes.

I ran a complete set of photos increasing the telephoto. The clarity & sharpness of this lens as amazing. I used the VR at various exposures & also shot without the VR. Again pictures were razor sharp. This is one of the best lens I have ever used. If you purchase this lens you will not be disappointed.
