Not sharp at all before f/2.8, then it gets good in the centre but still soft mid-corners. This doesn't matter. It renders beautifully. Color, contrast, "pop" and "feel" is amazing. I greatly prefer this over my 50mm f/1.8G, which is way sharper, but also more "clinical". The best thing is this is so cheap, why not buy one and find out for yourself?

Reasonably priced, light in weight but not in quality- takes great photos, especially portraits. Highly recommend!

This lens is special. While not perfect, it is close. Note, their are many negative reviews on this lens. All I can say about that is for recent copies, never seen one that wasn't on balance better than all other Nikon 35mms. My analysis is based on many copies of all Nikkor 35mm lenses, with over 35 copies of the 35mm F/1.4 AIS under my ownership over the years. How anyone can say that lens is remotely sharp escapes me. One of the worst Nikkors ever used. Dull, soft, off speed and somewhat desaturated colors on digital, I use my remaining two copies as paperweights. The 35mm F/2.0 AF-Ds I own, or have own, have been razor sharp. Edge to edge, even in close, from F/4 down. Perhaps at wider F Stops to but since never checked those edges cannot swear under oath. No reason to check-looked good! Also, color saturation is good. Not the best, or great, but very good and better than many older and newer lenses. But accurate. More so than most G lenses. Color saturation is not quite as good as the 35mm F/1.4 G, but better than the new 1.8 FX. Vibrance is as good as both, though the extra saturation and slightly better finesse of the F/1.4 G lens is preferable to my eyes. But still good. As all the aforementioned qualities are close, the next ones tip the F/2 AF-D in my favor/ Most importantly for me with the 35mm F/2.0 AF-D, is the contrast. The amount of it. The vibrance it yields. It bites! With deep, tone filled shadows and saturated high lights the "look" of the lens is electrically snappy. It has more bite and contrast than my Leica's Leitz glass 35mms. Used the 35mm F/2.0 AF-D on upscale weddings and on fashion shoots were it out resolves and snaps more than my Micros. Electric while retaining color and highlight detail. Wedding group shots that are blown up and printed to 4 x 6 feet are tack sharp with tremendous bite and snap, without blowing out highlights. In brief, this lens is tack sharp and bites with electric contrast, with out any noticeable distortion. Best of all, light weight. Only other Nikkor 35mm I like, and not as much, though it does have much better bokeh, is the 35mm F/2.0 AIS, later serial numbers. The F/1.4 G is ok, but given it's horrible vignetting and heavy weight, I won't use it anymore. Special note, most important thing can share with all is that sample variation is so significant and now so extreme that each and every lens needs to be check for everything. Always a problem, not it's rampant and very volatile. Highly recommend trying every lens or having unlimited return policy before buying any Nikon product.

I am not a professional photographer, so my opinion may or may not be important to you. What I use this lens for is shooting family portraits for friends, and taking pictures of my children. The reason that I wanted this lens so much was because I had heard from so many people how sharp it is. And boy were they right! I love how sharp it is! I have had a 50mm lens before and a a couple of different zoom lenses. None as sharp as this! Other things that I like about it are how small it is. I realize that I could have gotten a sharper lens for a couple hundred dollars more by buying the Sigma 35mm, but this thing is just so small! Its great! My wife can pick up the camera and not feel like she is hauling lumber. It also helps the camera feel a little more discrete. Something that I don't like about the lens is the speed at which it auto focuses. It's the slowest autofocus lens I have ever used. But, its not so much slower that it's the end of the world. I also miss the MA/M feature of the newer Nikon lenses. That always comes in handy when shooting video. But those two negatives really are minor to me. The pros super outweigh the cons and I don't know if there is a better lens for the price.

Small, light, fast focusing, sharp at F2.8 and above. Great lens, excellent price for a mostly metal lens, filter threads are plastic plus Nikon warranty.

This is a portable (in both weight and size) lens, great for use on street. One thing I really like is the inclusion of a DOF scale, as well as the option to adjust aperture manually. Haven't needed to shoot wide open so can't comment on the bokeh. So far I only used it to shoot pictures with a lot of depth of field. AF can be a bit loud. The weight, size, and convenience of using this lens makes it a keeper. It is also a cheap alternative to the 1.4G lens that costs a few times more.

This is a great little lens. It's very lightweight but with great build quality. It's fast and sharp. I wish Nikon made an FX 35mm lens between this one and the 35mm f/1.4, but this lens will work perfectly until I can afford to upgrade it. As always, Adorama's shipping was fast and the condition rating was spot-on. The only thing I'm not thrilled with is that I didn't know I was purchasing a gray market lens. That wasn't listed anywhere in the description.

I chose the fixed focal elngth to regain control of my depth of field. Wide angle zoom lenses tend to have enormous and uncontrollable depth of field and I wnated to control it.

I've never understood why this lens doesn't get more attention. It might be the smallest, lightest lens now offered by Nikon. WIth some cropping it could be all the lens you need for the usual range of photos on an all-day outing where weight of equipment is an important consideration. Closeups are so good that it is hard to tell them from what I get with my Micro-Nikkor 105VR, although bokeh is not as workable. I love it.

My serial number 347XXX lens is going in for service to clean oil from the aperture blades. This a very common problem for this lens and I can only find folklore that suggests Nikon ever fixed the problem effectively. In fact, when I bought my lens the problem was supposed to be history.

I use the 35 F2 D with my 85 1.8g on my D800. I can put both lenses in my pocket and shoot all day. And not carry a lot of glass around.

review headline says it all and it's a nikon...using it on a d90 as a 30*1.5 = 45mm (almost 50mm) lens in anticipation of getting d800 full frame.

I love this lens for landscapes. Not so wide that you know it was obviously a wide angle. It makes things look natural. The low light capability is excellent at F2. Sharpest at F2.8 or better. See attached photo for how beautiful the perspective of this lens is. Not a bad price either!

This is lens on my camera the most, by far. It is lightweight and provides excellent results at a great all around lens length. Not knowing this lens was designed to have low lens flare and was known for such, I once tried to play around with lens flare to figure out how to control it to my wishes. With this lens on the camera, it was next to impossible. The only thing I could achieve was a light washing out of the colors, but for the most part, even under very direct lighting (straight into the lens), it kept a nice amount of contrast. Now, I am shooting in manual focus almost entirely, and this lens bothers me to no end. With Nikon's auto-focus D lenses, the manual focus "feel" is hit or miss. My copy of the 35mm is a miss; of course it works, but it does not feel very good. Even with this gripe, I love the results from this lens so much, I cannot bear to part with it for a lesser 35mm lens. Maybe I need the 35mm Ai-S!

Other than a micro lens, this is the first "standard" fixed lens I've used for my DX digital cameras. I expected it to focus sharp because I had read favorable comments about this lens, but it has exceeded my expectations by far. Very fast, very sharp.

Great lens for the money. Very sharp from f2.8 on, maybe a little soft wide open. Recommended.

Maybe I am a snob, or one who walks with blinders on. I only have Nikkor lenses, but I have never been disappointed, so I stay put. My favorite by far is my Nikon 35mm F2. Small, light weight, and my shots are crisp. If I open it up I am treated to such a soft and pleasant bokeh. I am shooting on a first generation D-70, so I am actually at 52.5mm, and it is a very comfortable focal length. When the light allows, I set the aperture at F8, and have seen some of my images that are so sharp that they look as if I photoshopped them.

This small lens offers good sharpness, especially in the center. Quick focus and good contrast make it attractive for moderate wide angle shots. Mine is sharp and solid. The fast F2 aperture is useable for low light shots.

I am convinced that even the best of the wide and prime range zoom lenses still give up sharpness to fixed focal length lenses, not to mention speed, and the better and faster zooms are painfully expensive. The 35 f/2 substitutes for the traditional 50mm in digital (effectively 52mm on my D1x). This lens is surprisingly inexpensive, and though probably no match for a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8, still remarkably sharp compared to zoom lenses around this range, and much faster than the consumer level zooms. The focal length is flexible for a wide array of situations so I need nothing between my 12-24 and my 80-200 other than this 35.

Nice, sharp, and fast standard lens for DX sensors. Nice for HDSLR video on low light conditions. Very shallow depth of field, looks great. If coupled with a close-up filter pack and a reverse ring you could get a very powerfull and versatile macro lens for a limited budget as well.

This is a ready to go lens for both FX and DX. The 35mm focal length on FX and 52.5mm focal length on DX are both very useful. Its color and sharpness are also great. The best choice of a 35mm lens is of course the new 35 1.4G, but 35 f/2D is only around $300, which is a bargain for most people.

Excellent for use with my D300 as a low-light normal lens or my D700 as a full frame landscape or Group Portrait lens. No visible distortion and crisp, clean colors translates to a print straight out of the camera. No need to apply any software lens corrections. Easy enough to carry all day on the camera and get Pro quality images from any format Nikon.

Good lens, very sharp in the range f/2.8-5.6, small enough to take it with for every travel. Helpful when there is not enough light around.

This is a very good lens. The optics are great, it's reasonably small, lightweight, fairly well built, pretty much everything you could want.

I've gone back and forth trying to decide what prime lenses to own for my various nikon cameras that range from 35mm manual focus to DX and FX digital. I love the 35mm focal length because I find it IDEAL for full frame and still useful on DX. The Nikon 35 with its f/2 maximum aperture serves as my night/evening walk-around lens. Coupled with my D700, I can capture some great low-light images, even if they're in motion. I appreciate the good build quality, compact size and manual aperture ring (needed on my FM3A). It's a real joy walking around with just a prime lens sometimes. My only small complaints are it's price compared to the Nikon 35mm AF-S f/1.8 DX prime (an amazing bargain if you only shoot DX), and it's average amount of distortion compared to my Nikon 28mm AI-s lens (a true benchmark design with ZERO distortion). Overall I think this lens strikes the best overall balance for my varied needs.

This is a great lens for DX format cameras. It translates to a 52mm; which is a perfect standard prime focal length. I use it for portraits, and it stays on my camera more than my 50/1.4 lens (which I love also). The 35/2.0D lens is very fast, extremely sharp from 2.8 up (even nicely sharp wide open). Great color, contrast and image quality...a must have for DX cameras.

For FX cameras, this is a great lens for everyday use. I have most of the time mounted it in my D700. For DX cameras it is more suited to portraits as it gives a narrower view. Back to FX, this lens will perform correctly both for portraits, still nature or even not too wide landscapes. As a bonus it has a minimal focusing distance rather short, compared to other fixed lenses, which allows for more extreme close-ups than usual. Its maximum apperture of f/2 it is a bit soft, colors are not so well captured, and most of the time the depth-of-field is too narrow. I almost never use it. In fact most of the time, when speed is mandatory, I normally stick at f/2.8 where its performance and sharpness are simply excellent.

This review was very hard to be objective about. You see, I've been waiting impatiently for Nikon to release a new 35mm f/1.4 lens for more than five years.
Just is there’s no best camera for photojournalists, there is also no best lens. But there is a range of lens types that will give you a better chance at getting the shot.

Versatile f/2 wide-angle prime lens with manual aperture control
For beautifully sharp, high-contrast photos and videos with a natural 35mm perspective, the AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D is a lightweight, compact performer. Its manual aperture control ring enables smooth aperture adjustments during Live View video recording; and its fast f/2 maximum aperture is ideal for low-light shooting and soft background blur (bokeh). Add close-up focusing to just 0.85 ft. and Nikon's Super Integrated Coating for minimal lens flare and ghosting, and the AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D is a versatile prime lens for on-the-go shooters.
Sharp images from up-close to infinity - Excellent performance in any setting
Despite its compact, lightweight size, the AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D delivers sharp, high-contrast images at nearly any distance from as close as 0.85 ft. all the way to infinity. This makes it a great choice for scenic landscapes, environmental portraits, general shooting and more.
Low-light shooting and beautiful background blur (bokeh) Fast f/2 aperture with manual control
The AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D's wide maximum aperture enables shooting in more lighting situations, from dawn to dusk, indoors and outdoors. That wide maximum aperture also creates soft background blur, ideal for isolating your subject or shooting at higher shutter speeds. Plus, the AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D offers manual control of the aperture for smooth adjustments during Live View shooting.
Super Integrated Coating Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.
