Great, Easy-to-use Light Meter

I am a film photography student. My in camera light meter quit working in the middle of the semester. This Digisix 2 was a perfect replacement. It is easy to use and works wonderfully for my purposes.

Functionally Efficient Yet Slightly Difficult Setup

This has got to be the first time I have ever had to return to the instruction manual that accompanies this meter repeated times. The meter works as it should but has some subtleties to be aware of especially if you want to make use of some of the more in-depth features. The initial setup had me remarking huh; "What the heck does that mean?" As i initially struggled to get the ISO settings entered and somehow enabled the alarm feature. Ambient or Reflective measurements work without a hitch. Compares nicely to built-in camera meters. Getting a contrast measurement had me back to the instructions again as I was then informed that the meter returns to the original settings after the contrast range measurement is done. The pro's; it works well. The cons: setup is not 1, 2, 3 and have you ever struggled to get a strap on a meter with a loop the size of a needle eye, when it is contained in a slightly too large case? Neither have I until now. If I can read the EV ring on this meter without glasses I will be amazed (should be better in bright light though). I have 20/10 vision too. All the while the meter never shuts off, although it is no longer sampling until you press the measure button. The manual says it draws very little power and is always on (we shall see).I suppose all this trades off for the light weight and portability (fits in a pocket easily). However, I am leaning toward my Gossen Luna Pro still in terms of reliability even though it's already 25 years old. And roughly the same expense outlaid as this tiny Digisix 2. We shall see!

I like the convenience of the meter's size and it functions well

I like the convenience of the meter's size and it functions well as long as I set the ISO to 1/2 of the ISO I am actually shooting. The readings are way off if I use the proper ISO setting.

Simple and quick

Using a camera without a dedicated light meter can be awkward. I had been using a second camera's meter to set the first's. That was a juggling act. This little light meter does the trick and so much faster. It's pocket size, convenient and doesn't require switching cameras.

Exactly What I Needed

Perfect for what I needed. My primary use is with my non-electronic cameras (Rollieflex 2.8F and Hasselblad SWC and 500 C/M) and I use the meter in both the incident and reflected light modes. Exposures seem to be spot on and it takes up almost no space or weight when it's in my pack or pocket. If I lost it today, I'd order another tomorrow.

Light Meter

I like the ability to look at it and see all the combinations of Aperture and shutter speed in a glance like on the meters of old.

Experience will tell

I am using this to try and improve my exposures with the objective of reducing the times I need to take HDR (3 exposure) shots. My initial tests using the meter show that it is about the same as using the matrix-metering on my Nikon D7000. Once I get out "in the field" I'll use it more extensively to see if it has a benefit over the matrix metering. Other than that, it is a nice meter and functions as advertised.

The Gossen Digisix 2 Light Meter is an ideal enhancement for minimalistic, but nevertheless demanding photographic equipment. It expands the measuring functions of manually adjustable cameras to include incident light measurement, of which better exposure can be achieved for unusual subject contrast. The timer for time exposures, temperature monitoring for the camera bag and the clock with alarm round out the functions of the Digisix 2 and transform this into indispensable tools for the dedicated photographer.
