Knock-Off batteries always go dead sooner than the name brand. After several bad experiences with knock-offs losing their charge way sooner than the number of shots accounted for, I vowed to always use the name brand battery for my camera. Way less stressful knowing you are not going to miss a shot because your battery died.

Necessary extra battery

The M50 rips through batteries, especially these low capacity products, so having several is a must. I bought two extra, but still feel three may not make it through a full day of shooting and/or video recording. Do not trust third party as much, so these are the best option, but still not great in 2018.

Absolute necessity

Having tried after-market batteries in the past, all I can say is, Canon batteries are better, or at least better than the brands I have tried.  Not that the after-market batteries were "bad," they just did not perform as well in terms of holding their rated power.  I found that Canon batteries had a distinct advantage in cold weather performance - important to me as I live in the Sierra Nevada.  Conclusion:  Genuine Canon batteries provide greater satisfaction than after-market batteries.  That said, I have not tried the more expensive "high end" aftermarket batteries.

First quality

Bought it as a back up to share between my 2 SL1 bodies.  Great spare battery, it holds the charge for weeks and weeks in the bag.
