We purchased the HF G40 to record wrestling matches for the wrestlers in our community. Over 20TB later we still love this camera! So many features one might expect in a high end recorder with aditonal festures like being able to upload the videos to our owb servers remotely. One issue (maybe we use the wrong settings) when using FTP to upload our videos, if a video is greater than 1GB, that video is uploaded and the camera will not upload anymore videos. Other than that, we love the camera.

I purchased a VIXIA HFG40 in May 2018, I chose a Canon product because of the company's reputation for quality and its dedication to excellence. Initially, I was quite pleased with the camera. It worked as I had hoped and enabled me to capture some really nice video. Within a year, however, the main LCD began showing discolored vertical lines and the zoom would occasionally and inexplicably pull out from telephoto to wide angle. eighteen months, the main LCD stopped working entirely and the zoom consistently pulled out from telephoto shots.

Immediately I noticed great image quality. Solid built and balanced. It comes with a remote which is a big +. I really like the 3.5” flip out screen. And the mic input and headphone jack is a nice touch.

I brought this HD Camcorder for interviewing & special events. Wanted a HD camcorder with some prosumer features for the right price. The VIXIA HF G40 model fits my needs.

Bought a month ago to start capturing high school soccer video in preparation for college clips (scholarship. Key factors were 1) low light capability and (2) ballpark cost not to exceed ~ $1,000. Have recorded many games now in daylight, under the lights and in unlit fields during sunset for uploading to team's website for review. Many compliments from other viewers. Could not be happier with video quality. Easy to use with Manfrotto tripod (viscous coupling both directions). I've been taking photos for 35 years and am fairly critical (a bit of a lens "hoarder"...always looking for better quality pictures), yet this camcorder satisfies. Pros: ease of use, video quality, weight, dual cards, touch screen with remote, viewfinder for sunny days. Cons: video upload software with MacBook is clunky, MP4 convert on camcorder is slow (converts at normal playback speed...an hour to down convert an hour video),

I needed to upgrade my camcorder and needed something that could shoot videos in close quarters as well as farther distances without having to change lens. I also wanted an upgraded quality video that could perform well in low lighting. This camcorder met all of those needs.

I wanted a camcorder with at least 20x optical zoom *and* an electronic viewfinder. The options are limited, and this Canon seemed to me like a great option. I got a deal on a refurbished one and I'm glad I did, because it is just as if it were new. I haven't used it extensively but I did use it on a 2-week trip and so far I'm happy with the image quality and feature set, but pretty unhappy with the camera's ergonomics. First of all, it's big. I should have gone to see one in person before buying. I assumed it would be one of those little guys that fit in the palm of your hand, but it's not. It's the size of a very big eggplant, and it's heavy too. There seems to be a design flaw in the way the flip-out screen is engineered, because when carrying the camera around or taking it in and out of my bag, the screen just falls open by itself. One true annoyance is the placement of the power slider. I used to have a Sony camcorder that had its power dial located around the start/stop button. When you wanted to start shooting, you could slide the power ring and press the start button with your thumb, almost in one movement. The Canon has a slider on the top that goes from camera to off to media, and the slider is so loose that it easily gets moved inadvertently. I found this out the hard way when I put the camera in my bag fully charged and then took it out later to find that the battery was dead because it had accidentally been switched on. Add to this the fact that when you switch the camera on it takes a good 5+ seconds to be ready to shoot, and you have a piece of equipment that frustrates you every time you want to quickly shoot something. After fumbling for the on switch and then waiting for it to be ready, you've lost the shot half the time. So this may well be an excellent camera in many ways, but ultimately I'm too frustrated with its usability to be happy with it.

Upgraded from a G10 because I needed focus peaking because my eyesight isn't that good and needed to make sure my subject was in focus. I sometimes use instant auto focus in the outdoors via a LANC remote which is why I need the focus peaking.

This is my second cannon video camera, and I was very pleased with the video quality. However; the quality of the video is amazing. I film soccer games, and I am now able to see the numbers clearly on the jerseys.

I bought the G40 video camera several months ago. I use it for recording life stories. I have been doing this for over 35 years and found this camera to be the finest camera I have ever used. I sell a cd on amazon how to video a life story called "my living legacy". I tell people if they are going to start a video business or record a person's life story "Buy Canon".

I have had my camera for about 3 weeks now and love it. I use it to record outside sporting events. There have been a few others also filming while I was there with much larger and more expensive equipment but the g40 provides better quality.

I started my career doing VLOGs with an HF20. The next camera upgrade was my old trusty G20. Then I passed on the G30 upon a rumor of a coming G40. It was well worth the wait. My cell phone started ringing off the hook. Competitors in motorsport business starting calling how I got shots at traditionally dark venues. I think most venues in the sport of Truck and Tractor pull are dark. But the results were garnering serious attention. The footage copies down to Windows easy enough. And editing this codec along with all my other Canon cameras is a snap. It is not uncommon for me to have up to 4 cameras at a time rolling still using a 60D for interview footage. If you are limited to dark venues, give this camera a try, you will not be underwhelmed. You will enjoy what footage you get.

The low light performance of the G40 is second to none. The manual features are amazing! And, the frame rate choices, the 20x zoom lens, and assignable buttons are some of it's top aspects. In the past, cameras had features that others didn't, so a person almost had to buy 5 cameras for 5 different features. Not any more, this has it covered. Progressive filming, avchd, mp4, 60p, manual focus, low light, hot and cold shoes. Bravo Canon!!!

Most top features a person would have to buy 5 cameras in the past, now rolled into one awesome camera! Fantastic low light sensor, AVCHD, mp4, progressive, 24 30 60 frame rate, manual focus ring, hot and cold shoes, focus peaking, zebra bars, etc. Go Canon!!!

Advanced Video Capture On the Go
Compact, capable and easy to use, Canon's VIXIA HF G40 camcorder offers the optical refinement and dynamic advanced performance experienced videographers want in a lightweight and portable package. Using a Genuine Canon 20x High Definition Optical Zoom lens and a new, highly sensitive HD CMOS Pro Image Sensor with improved low-light performance, the VIXIA HF G40 camcorder provides sharp, Full HD video with beautiful highlight and shadow detail in virtually every lighting situation. A DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor speeds up operation and enables the lens's powerful image stabilization for clear and stable images, even when shooting handheld.
For fluid use in numerous situations, the VIXIA HF G40 camcorder has a 3.5-inch touch-capacitive screen, plus a tiltable electronic viewfinder. A host of manual controls are complemented by two modes: Wide DR Gamma and Highlight Priority, which help capture color and detail virtually consistent with how they're seen by the naked eye. Creative options are expanded with a new interval recording option that can capture fast motion of up to 1200x the original speed. Ideal for an incredible variety of uses, the VIXIA HF G40 is a stellar choice for anyone who requires professional-quality videos on the go.
Genuine Canon 20x High Definition Optical Zoom Lens
The VIXIA HF G40 camcorder features a Genuine Canon 20x HD Video Lens offering a 35mm equivalent of 26.8-576mm with a minimum object distance of just 23.6 inches (60cm). Incorporating advanced elements and coatings, it helps reduce flare, ghosting and other distracting effects, delivering sharp, clear images with minimal distortion. The VIXIA HF G40 features an 8-blade Circular Aperture, which helps reduce the "starburst" effect found in camcorders with non-circular apertures. The result is that points of light in out-of-focus areas, usually the background of your shot, are beautifully circularly blurred, creating an authentic and artistic feel. The professional touch of a manual focus ring allows accurate and precise control. For extra flexibility, the manual focus ring can be easily set to control zoom instead.
New, Advanced HD CMOS Pro Image Sensor
For incredibly sharp and detailed high-definition video recording, the VIXIA HF G40 camcorder features a reengineered, 1/2.84-inch, 2.91 Megapixel HD CMOS Pro Image Sensor that captures approximately 2136 x 1362 pixels. Thanks to the sensor's enhanced sensitivity, the VIXIA HF G40 helps provide vivid, accurate recording through an improved signal-to-noise ratio.
Improved Low-light Performance
Featuring an improved, low-luminance noise rating of +3 dB, the VIXIA HF G40 camcorder is able to capture clearer, sharper images in lower light, with even better detail.
1080/60p Recording in MP4
The VIXIA HF G40 camcorder gives you high-quality recording whether you're capturing MP4 or AVCHD files. 1080/60p recording captures twice the amount of information as 60i and with images captured at a rate of up to 60 frames per second, diagonal noise is virtually eliminated so even fast moving subjects show up crisply with motion and patterns clearly recorded. This greater sense of detail and faithful rendering of moving edges, plus enhanced color and fine tonal gradation, gives your video everything Full HD has to offer. With the VIXIA HF G40 you can record in internet-ready, easy-to-share MP4 format at up to 35 Mbps. The VIXIA HF G40 also features a maximum bit rate of 28 Mbps for AVCHD recording, the highest in the AVCHD standard. So, regardless of the format you're shooting or viewing, image quality is outstanding.
Built-in Wi-Fi Technology with FTP Transfer Capability
Built-in, dual-band (5 GHz/2.4 GHz) Wi-Fi technology on the VIXIA HF G40 camcorder lets you share your HD video easily and in a number of different ways. Connect with compatible networks, wireless hotspots and iOS mobile devices using the free Canon Movie Uploader app. Transfer files to selected FTP servers for back up or when a quick transfer is necessary. Share videos over the internet with CANON iMAGE GATEWAY# - an online photo storage service that lets you upload to social networking sites. Watch videos stored on the camera's memory cards directly on your living room TV or use your PC or mobile device to browse remotely through the previously recorded videos stored on your camcorder, without connecting a cable. The Remote Browse function uses a standard Web browser and does not require a special app.
