A lot of camera for the money!

For the first time since selling my 35mm SLR kit, I feel like I have a camera I can't out-run. Aperture-preferred? Check. Shutter-preferred? Check. Optical viewfinder? Check. Full manual? Exposure compensation? Wide ISO? Check, check, check. f=1.8 lens on a camera this price? Yes! DSLRs are nice, but this is just small enough to carry anywhere, and you'll have to buy a dedicated 50 / 55 mm lens to get 1.8 on a DSLR. Excellent battery life. Hot shoe. Lens sharpness is very good, lowlight performance is an order of magnitude better than pocket cameras. Metering on a par with my old film cameras. Manual focus may take some getting used to, but that's a small price to pay.

Fun point and shoot

After owning a G12 for a year, I replaced it with the G15. The G15 is a bit more refined and a little smaller. I do not miss the pivoting screen and I like that the flash is now concealed since I rarely use one. The G12 was great to take on vacations and carry around town, I look forward to more beautiful images with the G15.

Best Item We Bought for New Baby!

I am an okay photographer and needed a camera that would take amazing pictures without me having to do any real work. I spoke to two photographer friends and they both recommended the Canon G15. I have taken beautiful pictures of my baby and am so thrilled I bought this camera. The camera also has good battery life and I've found it to be sturdy. I've recommended this to many friends and every purchaser is happy.

The perfect in between

After much research of advanced point and shoot digital camera options I narrowed it down to two. The G15 being one. I have a DSLR and also a basic point and shoot camera, but I was looking for something in between. The DSLR did a fine job with pictures on a previous vacation trip, but it was rather bulky to travel with as others have noted. So my quest to find an advanced point and shoot prior to a recent vacation to Ireland was on. I visited my local camera store and after explaining what I was looking for they asked if I would be interested in a used G15. I said sure having owned Canon 35mm cameras years ago and always liked Canon but had not owned a Canon since the move to digital. The G15 was a favorite of the camera store and they took the time to show me the G15 features and explain some added functions of an advanced point and shoot camera. I made the purchase and took the G15 on vacation and I could not be more pleased with it. It was the perfect size for traveling via airports/planes and hopping on and off our tour motor coach. The picture quality is excellent and I was pleased with the range of options in the various shooting modes. I also found I did use the view finder. In some instances of bright sunlight it did help in framing the picture as opposed to the LCD screen. I also found the battery life was about as advertised. In short the G15 was an excellent purchase and I suspect I will be using it more and more.

The best point and shoot ever

I'm crazy Canon guy and using Rebel T5i and point and shoot ELPH 330 HS. Can't stop keep buying Canon and this time I chose Powershot G 15. Amazing and the best point and shoot camera ever with DSLR quality. Awesome at low light. Great HD video. 100% recommended! I love Canon! ....Thank you!

Another Great PowerShot

Compacts similar to the Canon G15 PowerShot that I use: Canon G5 PowerShot Canon G11 PowerShot Olympus E-p1 Olympus E-p3 G15 Pro (* indicates the ones that are very important to me): *Maximum Aperture – I shoot a lot in dim lighting without flash and therefore need a fast maximum aperture. The fast maximum aperture in my G15 (f/1.8) and my G5 (f/2) give me what I need. The slower maximum aperture in my G11 (f/2.8) was very disappointing. *Quiet Operation – the Canon G series cameras are so quiet that they are my first choice when I am shooting in theatres and recording studios. *Image Quality – Since I make prints larger than 14X16 inches, image quality is very important to me. The G15 and G11 provide me with the image quality I need. Menu – very similar to G11 External Controls – similar to G11 Black Body – this small, black, inconspicuous body is my first choice when I must shoot clandestinely. Small size and Light Weight – when I need to travel with one lens and one body, this fixed lens camera is my first choice. Focal Length Range – the 28-140mm equivalent focal length (same as the G11) covers 80% of the shots I take. Fast Aperture – the f/1.8 aperture at the 28mm focal length and the f/2.8 aperture at the 140mm focal length are fast enough for most of the shots I take. Thumb Rest – too often, on my G5 and G11, my right thumb would accidentally press a button on the back of the camera. Having a safe place to park my right thumb reduces this occurrence. Texture/Feel – love the feel of the rough texture on the surface on the camera body. G15 Con (* indicates the ones that are very important to me): *No articulated LCD – being able to easily take ground level, waist level, and over-the-head shots with the articulated LCD is one of the main reasons I have loved my G5 and G11. The loss of this feature is the main reason I cannot give the G15 a 5-star rating. *Lens is not interchangeable. Even though this lens covers 80% of my shooting needs, it would be nice to be able to change the lens to cover the missing 20%. *Variable Maximum Aperture – I would much rather have a constant f/1.8 aperture lens instead of the variable aperture f/1.8 to f/2.8 lens. *Manual Focus – it is very difficult to manual focus my G15, G11, and G5. I wish I could find a digital compact with an easy to use rangefinder focusing system. *Microphone Jack – I have a shotgun mike that fits in the hotshoe but the G15 (like the G5 and G11) does not have a microphone jack. ISO Control – on my G11, there was an ISO control dial on the top of the camera body. I could change the ISO without turning the camera on. On the G15, the dial was removed. The only way to change ISO on the G15 is through the menu when the camera is turned on. Battery and Battery Charger – the G15, G11, and G5 all use different batteries and battery chargers. I wish they could share batteries and chargers. Battery/Memory Card Door - the door is not located in a good position. When I have to change the battery and/or memory card, I must remove the camera from the tripod to open the door. This con is the same for my G11 but not for my G5. In the G5, the battery is blocked by the tripod but not the memory card. Tripod Socket – is not located in line with the optical center of the lens. This is important when I mount the camera on tripod to shoot panoramic shots that I will stitch. Interval Timer – the G15 has a limit of 1 to 10 shots with a 1 to 30 second interval between shots. My G11 has a limit of 1 to 10 shots with a 0 to 30 second interval between shots. My G5 has a limit of 2 to 100 shots with a 1 to 60 minute interval. I wish my G15 (and G11) had an interval timer like my G5. Built-In Flash – the built-in flash and flash switch on the G15 are located where the exposure compensation dial was located on my G11. I need the compensation dial in that location more than I need the flash and flash switch. Image Numbering – wish I had more control over the image numbering sequence so I could differentiate images taken by similar cameras. I run into problems when my G15 and G11 create images with the same file name. I would love to be able to place the letter "A" in front of the file names of the G15 images and the letter "B" in front of the file names of the G11 images so I could differentiate image A12345 from image B12345.

Good camera, a little pricey.

This was intended as a replacement for an older Canon point and shoot and will be used mainly for travel and general photography. It is a full featured camera lacking only the ability to change lenses. Since I've used Canon cameras for some time and currently own three, I find navigating menus and functions very easy. I think someone new to Canon will also find this to be true. I've had the G15 for two weeks and can't comment on the dirt problem some users have reported. The lens cover is a leaf type but my current point and shoot has the same arrangement and this hasn't been a problem. I do keep my cameras in cases when not in use. I don't like the on/off switch. The other cameras I own have either a lever switch or one that requires a slight effort to operate. The G15 has a button switch that could be activated in a case or when grabbing it.

Gained Good Features; Lost a Few

I am a previous owner of G11. In comparison, the G15 has a pop-up flash and no swivel back. It has a new menu system that is better organized than the G11. You have horizon indicator. Sensor has 2 more megapixels. The aperture has 6 leaves. The lens at wide angle is f1.8 and f2.8 at telephoto. The latter was on my improvement wish list. The pop-up flash has delicate plastic linkages. I preferred the fixed flash on the G11/G12. Now it is on my wish list. So is swivel back. The exposure is accurate. B&W shots are excellent but you don't get raw recording with b&w. That's on my wish list too.

Great point and shoot

I took some photography classes in college so I know the basics of shooting manual and wanted a point and shoot that I could have control over when I wanted it. We bought the camera so we could take pictures and video of our son without having to use the big dslr all the time. This has been fun to get to know how to use. I love that you can go from fully auto to fully manual and anywhere in between. Seems to have a lot of the same features as our 5D Mark 3 so if you were wanting a more portable version, this could be it. It's handy to have the leveling feature on the screen as well as the live histogram. We've played around with with using a speed light in the hotshoe and that works great. Taking video is very smooth. I like that continual focus the makes sure you hang onto the main subject even in motion.

Great take-everywhere camera!

I purchased this camera a couple weeks before Christmas and have used it almost everyday since. Images are outstanding, particularly the low-light images I took at various candlelight services...stunning, and that's my wife's words, not just mine. Has an abundance of features including a fast lens, f1.8 at 28mm and only f2.8 even at 140mm! Love setting my G15 on a tripod and using the built-in ND filter for images of moving water. Still love and have my DSLR, but my G15 now goes everywhere with me.

Next best thing to a full SLR camera

A good all around camera with long battery life. Excellent pictures with the functionally set manually for artistic effects. Video is a snap. Camera has a tilt meter on the display and a wide range of lens settings from wide angle to telescopic. Feels like a real camera when you hold this. Has a nice balanced feel with a textured finish for gripping the body.

New to me, just getting acquainted

This is a replacement for my old G9...which I liked a lot until it began to have exposure and color problems late in the second year. It went in for repair at least 7 times and the problems were never sufficiently corrected. I liked the flexibility of shooting modes, the size and handling of the G9. I could not find the same features/functions all together in any other digital camera option and I am able to use the 0.5 wide angle and 2x telephoto lenses and adapter tube from the G9. So I am taking a chance with the G15. The on/off button is a definite negative I have discovered very early on; it's much too easy to turn the camera on while handling it, putting it into a pocket or case.

Fantastic camera

Got this to carry on trips when my full size DSLR was too big to take. The Canon takes gorgeous pictures. Just learning it, but on automatic settings it easily takes outdoor evening and dusk pictures that take a lot of setting adjustment with my DSLR. This isn't a shirt pocket camera - it is relatively heavy, but substantial and easily fits in my jacket's side pockets. The camera frame has a nice "rough" texture to it that makes it easy to hold but isn't the too grippy rubber type of coating that some cameras and binoculars use. The G15 is a great mid-way camera between an iPhone and a DSLR. Now I won't lose pictures that a cell phone just can't capture. The only negative, and it is minor, is the view finder is pretty weak. I'm glad to have it, but it is small and tough to use.

Grab And GO

Carry with me-very light. Easy to use out of the box. The viewfinder was easy to adjust and seems quite clear. Still learning to fine tune from the manual. Only negative--No landscape mode for that quick shot.

Great camera

I bought this camera to take on a trip to Niagara Falls, NY City, DC & Virginia because I did not want to take my DSLS. It is compact enough that I could carry in purse, pocket etc. I got wonderful pics of the falls, excellent night pics in NY, statue of Liberty, monuments in DC. I bought the adaptor so I could use a polarizer. You need to watch the back of the screen when turning the polarizer, it will not show any change when looking through the view finder. When using the view finder, you will see some of the adaptor but will not affect taking a pic. I wish it had the small manual like my DSLR has because I do like to take it along. I requested one but was the 8x11 size still helpful though. Pictures are very sharp & clear, battery life pretty good 200-250 pics which included looking at them on the screen, menu easy to use, love having the compensation dial on the top easy to make adjustments, don't miss the rotating screen on the back, never used it on my old powershot. Hardly use the view finder, good viewing screen on the back.

Do not upgrade from a G12

I had a G12 and it took stunning underwater photos. I decided to "upgrade" to a G15. Huge mistake. Nothing but problems with this camera. Takes way to long to focus and images are no where near as clear and as sharp as the G12. I would give this camera back to Canon in a second to have my G12 back.

Great camera

I had purchase the SX 150 in September of 2012 and was disappointed with it's performance. Everything about it was sub par and I was considering going back to using my A570is when I decided to purchase the G15 in April of 2013. After using the G15 now for 6 months, I can give it a great review. Definitely worth the money. Faster continuous shooting, quicker focus, and f 1.8 lens and long battery life. This camera performance should not be compared to a DSLR performance because it's not one. But with its many shooting modes, quick recharge on the flash and compact size, to me, makes it worth every penny. I love being able to take 8 to 10 continuous shots and then pick out the best one of the shoot. I'm able to get pictures I would normally miss with the SX15's slower continuous mode. And no more carrying around an 8 pack of AA batteries because of how fast the SX15 would used them up. Longer battery life is a huge plus.

AWESOME!!!!

I bought the G9 in 2007. It still works. But, dust got into the lens. After 6 years and about 100,000 pictures I think that is reasonable. The camera was a tank. I also own the T3i with multiple lenses. I love the T3i but it is not as easy to carry around as the G series. Decided to buy the G15. Well worth the investment. I am WOWED by the improvements. Awesome pictures. Love the faster lens. Love the higher ISO. I have had this camera less than a month and I have already shot a few thousand pictures. I can't put it down. I take it with me everywhere. The battery lasted through 700 pictures on the first charge. Great photos during daytime and nightime. Love how easy the flash is to turn on. That is much improved. My only wish is that I could change the TV and AV while in the "P" setting the way they had it in the G9. Other than that, I have no complaints. Very happy with this purchase. I won't wait another 6 years to upgrade.

Great point and shoot

Pros - Build quality is excellent. Menus are very intuitive, didn't need the instructions to find anything. Camera is very solid and doesn't feel like most point and shoots. Image quality is great for a P&S. Focus is very fast and accurate. Video quality is outstanding, rivals many dedicated video cameras. Cons - Viewfinder is pathetic. It has no exposure info, poor clarity, the only disappointment on an otherwise fine camera.

disappointed

I took about 160 indoor photos with this camera to take shots of our newborn baby , baby's stuff and gifts , on LCD screen the pictures look bright but when I transfer them to computer they look dark and dull , I didn't like them , some pictures look like if it was taken by iphone camera . Some details were unclear or grainy when I zoom in the picture. I was expected something better when I bought this camera.

The very best!

I use this camera professionally when space limitations require a smaller camera. The optics are EXCELLENT! One great feature is the fast speed for burst shots. Well engineered controls and easy to use menu. This is my third camera in the "G" series and it is the best yet.

Serious G15 bugs

I bought this camera about a month before I went on a vacation. I tried it out on a variety of everyday situations, and it seemed to work reasonably well, although the viewfinder turned out to be even more worthless then mentioned in other reviews. The wide angle was less wide than my previous camera, but I thought it would be OK for most pictures. It wasn't until I started using it on my trip that I discovered that this camera has very serious flaws which are especially evident at long distance shots. When shooting at maximum wide angle, the LCD shows a wider field of view than the camera can actually photograph. Everything looks good on the LCD up to pressing the shutter button, but when the display comes up afterward, the result is cropped picture about 5-10% smaller on the LCD screen (and on the memory card than was shown in the preview. If you try to take a near maximum width picture of a wide building, the sides get cut off. If you notice the cropping when the two second display comes up, in theory you can back up and take an overly large picture, but I found in many city situations the combination of the limited wide angle capability and this cropping made taking the picture of a moderately wide building or similar subject impossible. There was an even worse problem, however. Every so often I would take a carefully composed photo, and the the result would the a picture skewed up or down by about 20%, from what was shown in the viewfinder when I clicked the shutter. It turns out that you can carefully click the shutter, wait for the screen to go dark and the shutter sounds to complete, but apparently the camera has still not captured the image. I found I had to wait and hold the camera steady for a couple of seconds or so after the shutter click to make sure the picture registered properly. To be really safe, you need to wait for the preview to come up and look at it carefully. Needless to say these problems are a disaster if you are taking any sort of action scene. I've never had this sort of problem with any other digital camera. Hopefully this can be fixed with a firmware upgrade.

Good compact camera with SLR features

As a professional, I use this camera as a backup in situations where having the big SLR/lens can be an issue. I also use this now as my underwater video camera- the upgrades from the G12 with some of the video and other features gives you a lot more control similiar to an SLR- traveling with this as opposed to another big housing and system makes up for any differences you have. Wish they had kept the articulating LCD screen- only bad decision they made on the upgrade. It still is a compact camera, has limited zoom and wide angle- lag time is still there, but better than before. But, camera does give you most all controls of SLR, so can make your own decisions.

Great satisfaction from italy !

This camera is an extension of my arm, great for street photography, always in my pocket. Macro is great and bokeh very good. As others have said: rarely carry my DSLR anymore! Now at a lower price in Europe, so much so that I'm planning to buying another one.

Amazing camera

I bought this camera as a vacation replacement for a full size DSLR when I wanted something small, yet functional, to lug around a theme park, for example. This camera is amazing. The fast lens sold me on the camera and it doesn't disappoint. I also have a speedlight 270EX II which I rarely need to use. I love the 1.8 - 2.8 speed. Quality is amazing and performance is wonderful. I don't have small kids, anymore, so the slightly reduced focus speed doesn't bother me in the least. It focuses faster than you might expect for a point/shoot. The most surprising feature has been the macro capabilities....WOW, you can shoot wide open at 1cm from the lens. Close up shots are fun and very cool! I couldn't be happier and rarely carry my DSLR anymore. Thank you Canon!

Recent Purchase: Canon G15

By BillBQ

A few weeks ago when visiting NYC, I went to the B & H Camera Store, stopping at the Canon kiosk on the 2nd floor. While I'd researched the Canon Powershot G15 as well as competitor cameras online, I wanted, as a longtime Canon user, to experience a demonstration with Canon first. After doing so, I bought a G15, and have used it extensively since then. Previously, for the past 4 or 5 years, my camera of choice was the Canon Powershot G10. It was a real workhorse for fine art photography, stre...

Best Compact Camera

By StacheCache

I've only had the G15 for about a week but I already know it satisfies a long time quest. I own a Canon D40 plus two superb "L" lenses that serve me well. But I wanted a smaller, lighter camera to travel with, one that had pro features without all the heft and bulk. I think the G15 is it! I have tried several P&S camera with limited success. I even had a new mirrorless camera for a few months but it did not work for me. The biggest problem with these other options has been the lack of a view...

The Canon PowerShot G15 Digital Camera is a point-and-shoot with expansive creative possibilities. Going beyond the genre's name, the G15 provides you with any number of options for capturing your vision - from 1080p HD video recording to 10 fps continuous burst shooting to numerous shooting modes. In addition, the G15's compact form-factor makes it well-suited for being your go-to image maker.

The PowerShot G15 also features a 5x optical zoom 28-140mm (35mm equivalent) f/1.8-2.8 lens. The lens gives you a good overall range for shooting in most any situation, from group shoots to macro close-ups. The aperture range lends itself to capturing successful images in low-light conditions as well as the ability to render shallow depth-of-field.

The camera's 12.1MP CMOS sensor works together with the DIGIC 5 image processor, comprising Canon's HS SYSTEM. The aforementioned low-light performance is a hallmark of this duo; enabling the ISO to be set up to 12800, if need be. The processor also enables fast transfer of data while powering the copious features and functions of the camera.

Two examples of these functions are High-Speed AF and High-Speed Burst HQ. These two provide the G15 with a continuous capture rate of 10 fps while maintaining image quality. Of course, Intelligent IS image stabilization, a vast range of shooting and recording modes - including 12-bit multi aspect RAW + JPEG capture and many other features ensure that the G15 is more than the name 'point-and-shoot' would suggest.

Other ways the G15 gives you an edge for your photographic endeavors include the optical viewfinder, a 3.0" LCD, a hot shoe and a tripod mount. An HDMI connection also provides you with a one-cable connection to your HDTV for instant sharing of recorded videos.
