I purchased this for my husband who does sound recording for videography. He needed something small but powerful. This created a very clear beautiful sound.

The Sony PCM-M10 is a professional-level recorder that works well and feels solid. I've mainly been using it to record sounds that our babies are making as they begin to vocalize and eventually talk. I've also been using it to make field recordings of ambient outdoor soundscapes and will likely also use it to "collect" sounds for future electro-acoustic music compositions (aka musique concrète). It does a great job of recording voices and ambiences. The omnidirectional microphones pickup sounds from all directions and capture the acoustics of the space in which you are recording. The level meters are fantastic, although I wish that there was a peak hold. The 5 second pre-record buffer is indispensable - I love it. The built-in microphones are perfectly fine for the price of this unit and with the appropriate adapter you can connect any external condenser microphone. A windscreen is needed for outdoor work because the built-in mics are sensitive to wind. Sony has been *the* name in professional digital recording, editing, and mixing, especially with their multitrack machines the PCM-3324 and PCM-3348 from the 1990's, so I partly made the decision to purchase this unit based upon Sony's stellar reputation. Although I have been a music recording engineer for many years, the PCM-M10 has ignited my interest in voice, soundscape, and nature ambience recording. I'm delighted with this little recorder.
