Review Summary

This is an excellent lens for a very specific purpose. The zoom range is awkward (50-150mm) - it's not wide and it's not a powerful zoom, but it IS a very fast lens for this reach. This is *not* a multi-purpose lens, so know why you want it before paying this much money. This lens is nearly ideal for what I use it for, which is shooting ballet performances on a more-or-less well-lit stage in a dark auditorium from a stationary position. For that purpose, this lens not only shines, but has almost no competition (except for the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8, which is almost [$] more). I found the focus in good light to be extremely fast and accurate. When shooting in dim light, I use manual focus anyway, which also increases camera response. Pictures are gorgeous and an order of magnitude better than the slightly underexposed and slightly fuzzy pictures a slower lens must take because it has to pay for the low light with a slow shutter speed. What would I change? Nothing, really, except to extend the range, either up or down, to make it more useful for general purposes. This lens is near perfect for what I need to do with it.

This lens is amazing, as long as you get a copy that has proper focus calibration. The the person that wrote a review saying that it didn't focus very accurately, send it to Sigma. They had quality control with the first run of production on this lens and most of them had improper calibration for focusing and focused in front of a subject. After you send it to them you will see the true 5-star quality of this lens.
