Disappointed!
I have been looking for a simple alternative to using cookies. So I decided to throw down close to $ on this spot attachment, hoping I could make some interesting background lighting and also use it as a fined tuned spot light. I was very disappointed with this product. I'll explain:
First, put this in comparison with other items you can buy for $. You can buy a laptop, a 50inch HDTV, a brand new iPhone, an Einstein strobe, etc etc. All of those things have complex multi-function abilities, computer chips and are extremely useful.
Now let's look at this hunk of plastic and aluminium, called the Bowens Universal Spot Attachment. It looks and feels cheap. But it's expensive and doesn't work well.
Problems:
* It DRASTICALLY cuts your light power. By several stops.
* You must use it at a far distance from the wall, probably 10+ feet before the light spread is enough to cover a background. (This in combination with the loss of light means you need a very powerful strobe to make it useful. Even then, forget shooting over f4.
* There is no ventilation for modeling lamps and if you plan on using this with a high powered LED unit, it will heat up too hot and may damage your equipment.
* It doesn't come with any sort of slides or gobos to start with. So you'll have to shell out another $200 for these.
* The bayonet style or s-fit mount pegs that let you connect this to a strobe have issues in the fact that they are screwed in and the screws block the ability to lock the unit on some strobes.
Finally, and the only reason I am spending this much energy on a review when I can simply return it and say nothing, there are few to no reviews letting people know about these issues. So I'd rather not see you waste your time or money. They should discontinue this product and start over.
