I have used these and other off brands for several years now and without a doubt, you get what you pay for. The Apple adapter are bulletproof and prove their value over time. My originals still work flawlessly and the cheap ones were long gone in the trash. I only bought another because my daughter upgraded her computer and needed one of her own.

This is exactly what you think it will be. It's kind of ridiculous that it's necessary for new Macbooks. It would seem that Apple has created an ancillary market for dongles by removing USB ports, SD card readers, etc. from their laptops—there's some parallel to be made here about the increased atomization of labor into discrete, informal gigs and the modular nature of current Apple tech where you have to buy a specialized part for each device you want to connect, but...why bother. If you have any devices that connect with a regular USB, you probably need it.

Without this adapter non of your USB devices that you may have that use the regular USB size connector would work. This allows you to connect cameras, HD's and many other devices that require that regular USB connection.

Isn't the cheapest on the market but the price is reasonable. Does a good job, feels sturdy and looks sane. I've read about risk of corrosion when connecting a plug that's coated in a different metal than the jack. This is controversial but sometimes discussed in audio engineering forums. Some cheaper adapters like this appear to be coated in other metals. If there is in fact any risk to that, presumably using both an apple adapter and apple computer would alleviate it

While I would rather these adaptors weren't necessary at all, the fact is that they are -- at least in the short term till the industry adapts to USB-C. Given that, these adaptors are sturdy, well made and do exactly as advertised. With the current discounts, they are well priced (and should stay that way) and good value.
