Review Summary

Going from a 50D to this camera has changed my photography. Many of the frustrations I've had with getting exactly what I was looking for in a shot and was blaming myself for those results, have dissolved into thin air. It's like a sudden payoff after doubting my skills. Instant addiction and instant gratification. Didn't think it possible for a switch in equipment to result in a doubling or tripling of the usable shots. Now I can justify upgrading my glass. Lenses that I thought were world class have been revealed as sub par!

I was looking for a pro series Canon body and saw a very well priced one at Adorama. The condition was rated as an E-, but I would have rated as E++. It's imacculate and in better condition than my Canon 5d3. Highly satisfied with my purchase and great customer service helped me acquire this dream camera of mine!

I am a professional photographer and I shoot a lot of sports in low light situations and this camera is easily the second best camera Canon has made for this type of siutation. The files are very clean up to iso 3200. Iso 4000 to 6400 is very usable. Autofocus is fairly accurate but it does take some work to figure out how best to set it for certian situations. It does struggle quite a bit with low light and subjects wearing darker clothes but I guess that is to be expected. I own two of these cameras and in my opinion they are the best sports option with the exception of the 1DX.

This camera has a fast buffer so I am not missing important shots waiting for the camera to transfer the images to the memory card.

Excellent all-around camera. Great for fast action or low light. This camera can do it all.

This won't be the typical review of this fine camera for I haven't had a chance to really put it through its paces yet in AI Servo/Continuous Shooting drive mode. However I can say the Single Shot/One Shot focus mode images from this are razor sharp. And the weather sealing was recently a godsend for just last week while I was attempting to cross a mountain stream while carrying my 5D Mark II and the 1D Mark IV the current swept my feet out from under me and down I went, submerging both cameras in the water. The 5D2 was destroyed and I'm waiting for a settlement from my insurance company. However the 1D4 wasn't fazed by the water at all, everything works just the way it should. Next weekend I'll be shooting an event which will give me a test of the 1D4s continuous shooting mode and I'm expecting excellent results from it.

This is one camera that sets the pros from the ameratures. Super fast and great video well beyond 7d's capability in low light. The only thing ive noticed is the battery life is a bit short, but not really a big deal. Solid built and heavy, but thats what you pay for.

This camera is a beast. 10fps will rock your world. I shoot a lot while on the move - in, on and hanging off all manner of transportation in developing countries. Not missing 'the shot' makes this investment very much worthwhile. The low light capability is incredible for both stills and video (which when shot with a 24-70 2.8 blew my mind in regards to quality). She's not cheap, but if you're in the market for pro level quality and pro level options, you won't be disappointed.

For outdoors and good indoor lighting: 1- excellent fast accurate focusing. 2- picture quality is great. 3- excellent for sporting events, concerts, weddings. In poor / low lighting, the focusing is slow and inaccurate, especially with lens that is slower than F2.8

For the sports shooter it doesn`t get any better than this. The low light focus capability combined with the high ISO performance makes this a sports photographers dream. If you are shooting in the darkest high school gym to the pro stadiums this body has you covered.

Canon has simplified the controls on this body as it's kind of a hybrid between the D series bodies and the 1 series bodies---making it easier to use. The fast shutter is great for moving subjects: sports and wildlife. The battery life is OK, but doesn't last as long as my 5D2 batteries.

this is a amazing camera, it's my metal super model. i pull it out the bag and eyes light up. pair it with my canon band new 70-200 L lens II . greatness. when people see the results on the spot . they are amazed. when they hear the 10 Fps pop off same reaction. shoot my son's basketball games in the gym low light of course . great . crisp, sharp . expensive of course, but you get money shots 99.9 percent. built like a tank

Great camera with excellent performance! Like most of the top-end bodies, this is expensive, but if you need the performance (e.g.., FPS, good high-ISO, etc.), then this is the Canon camera for you!

If you're looking at this camera, is probably because your current body is lacking something this bad boy has. The most accurate focusing canon body to date, almost no hunting in low light. Need high ISO? shot it at 6400 with relative low noise, use12800 with noise reduction and you're good. Are you in extreme conditions? The weather seals on this camera will let you shoot on almost any place on earth. I mentioned the size of the sensor as both a pro or a con, if you shoot within the 24-70 range you won't get that 24 on the wide end. if you're shooting sports or wildlife, you will get more out of your telephoto lens. I am covered from 17 to 400 with my current lens line up, so I don't have a problem with the "crop" sensor. If you're upgrading from anything but a 1Dlll you will get a significant upgrade. If you don't have a good lens line up, you're better off buying the pro glass first, as cameras tend to go down in value over time, whereas lenses hold their value even after a version ll of the same lens comes out. I will not upgrade this camera for a long time.

For the sports photographer, this is the camera body to use. Speed and low-light capability are paramount, and the 1DMkIV does it's job. Shooting in multiple ballparks means vast differences in lighting. I've pushed the ISO setting past 5K and still come away with usable images. When the 4th quarter or extra innings arrive, most of my colleagues have packed up and I'm still shooting. If you afford the large price tag, I highly recommend this camera body.

It looks great, shoots well, easy to use and is as 'fast as hell' as long as you're using a good quality CF/SD card, and is an all round good solid camera. I do however believe that Canon at this stage in the market, especially with the very competitive semi-pro alternatives charge a lot for pretty much just pro-body casing (of course there is slightly more to it than that but does it warrant the inflation?). With customers apprehending the MK5 etc (or whatever they end up calling it?) and people on a budget, I would be more inclined to test the cheaper semi-pro alternatives with similar functionality. Hence why it's a great camera but still far from perfect... And I get it - Canon, Nikon, etc etc are all in the business of making competitive profit-making products to drip-feed to the masses. My frustration though, is paying top dollar for only slightly significant upgrades on the high end Canon lines. Personally I mostly use the MK4 for sports (speed) and events (picture quality) and find that the camera is definitely my first choice over my 5D and 7D. I sometimes prioritize the 5D for the full frame and megapixel and the 7D for the crop factor but the majority of the time - if I have time I will switch my lens over to the MK4. I wish I could afford three of them even though I still highly rate the 5D. The ISO expansion is amazing. I have tested the equivalent scenario on all three camera's with the same settings and the MK4 comes up trumps. And the video mode is excellent despite no IS mode. The one thing that really does bother me though and I've heard of this happening to other people with the MK4. It randomly over-exposes from time to time?!? It may be for a single shot or a sequence of shots but the pictures are totally unusable. I'm talking 3+ stops over! It is very sporadic and I do shoot a lot of pictures but I also want to be able to trust my camera. For that reason this camera drops points for me. In my eyes It's the closest digital equivalent to the EOS 1V which is great. If you can afford it- buy it. But if you can afford to wait for it's successor- do so. Enjoy.

This camera allows me to shoot in lower light at faster shutter speeds. This should come in very handy as the racing season is about to begin. So many races are now night.

This camera is meant to compliment my 5D Mk II. I'll use this for events that need speed (like sports and special events) while the 5D Mk II will handle the landscapes and portraits where the full frame will come into play. I have been shooting with the 1D MK IV for a week and love it. It is solid, can handle being in not so nice locations and can keep up with you. The magnification aspect of the sensor is welcome and extends the reach of my lenses. I would highly recommend purchasing an LCD protector (my choice was a Giottos Optical Screen Protector that is rigid glass and color balanced) as this will save you from future headaches and expenses. This camera is blazingly fast and helps me exceed my potential.

So far I am disappointed. The camera is in the Canon repair center as I write this. At first it seemed okay, but the pictures have gotten worse daily. Hopefully Canon will rectify this.

The camera is as advertised, with outstanding high-ISO resolution. It's an upgrade from my oft-used 1D Mark III, so there was no "period of uncertainty." Just pick it up and shoot.

Replaced a 1D Mark III. Really loved the Mark III but this is even better. My favorite is the fast shutter speed and ability to take up to seven bracketed images automatically. In a pinch I can take a three image bracket in less than a second using hand held. The only thing that would be better about this camera was if it was less expensive, but as usual you get what you pay for.

I've now shot 30,000+ images with the Mk IV. I'm still amazed. I'm able to shoot in extreme conditions. I've found a new ISO at 8000 I really enjoy when the lighting is poor. And, I just made a poster from a print shot at 12800iso, f2.8 @664 shutter speed. It's real easy to adjust the exposure compensation to take out shadows when shooting against the sun. Something I'd never do before.

It is really hard to assess everything this camera does. I find myself often basing my comparisons with perfection with this camera, where past cameras were given a lot of slack (they were just cameras).... So it is quite a machine. I've moved up from a Mark II, and I think the most noticeable difference is image quality. It feels exactly like the 6 year old mark II... which causes my wife to wonder why I spent 5k on the "same thing"?

We moved up from the 5D MKII because of the fps, and very happy we did. Much better then we hoped for.

Ordered mid-October, received from Adorama last week with as much anticipation as anyone else who had one on order. Other "pro" bodies to compare this to is my 5D (original version), 5D Mark II and a 1D Mark III. I still own the Mark III and the 5D Mark II. After a week of shooting, setting up my custom functions and scrutinizing over Canons 122 page "white paper", which goes over every single feature of this body (the "white paper" is downloadable on Canon's website) I will give you brief rundown as im sure reviews will soon be pouring in as these are shipped to consumers. I see some substantional improvements over the Mark III, enough to justify the pricetag... 1) low light shooting up to ISO 12600 is simply amazing. ISO above that are really not something you want to use unless absolutely needed. Even with noise reduction, pictures at the high three custom ISO's arent really practical. I believe more of a marketing point than a useable feature a professional would use. 2) HD video at custom frame rates. I personally am not an HD video fan on pro bodies...I have a Canon full HD camcorder for that...but I would be somewhat disappointed if the Mark IV didnt have HD video. 3) Autofocus system retooled with 39 cross-type AF points. Customization of those AF points and their expansion is available as a custom function. 4) A new feature, which I can not belive how much I love is "Auto ISO". You set ISO to Auto, and set camera to manual. You choose shutter speed and f stop, camera figures ISO automatically for proper exposure. This is a godsend in changing light conditions and is amazingly acurate. The only downside, which maybe will be addressed in a future firmware version, is that you can not manually adjust exposure, using the quick control dial in 1/3 step increments. 4) AF point actually changes whether you have camera in landscape or portrait mode. No more changing AF point yourself when shooting portrait. There is a sensor in body which automatically changes AF point to match the cameras orientation. This point is of course programable by the user easily. (Too Cool !) 5) Improved JPEG workflow with such features as "Auto lighting optimizer" reducing over/underexposed shots, and even inbedable copyright infomation which can not be programed directly from the camera. 6) VASTLY improved 3" LDG with 900,000 dot viewing and glare reduction. The same LCD as the 5D Mark II which I love. ...now for my only minor gripe. There is already a firmware update version 1.06 to address AF issues with slow moving subject moving toward you. Canon calls this an "enhancement", hoping to steer clear of the Mark III AF fiasco. In their defense, my body came with the new version already installed so a firmware update was not needed on my part. ---OK....is it worth moving up from the Mark III or the 5D MII....in my humble opinion yes. The update sensor, (which is a technological wonder), amazing low light ability, reworked AF, HD video and a new LCD which is simply amazing make this a no brainer for me. Too bad my Mark III's resale value tanked thanks to the Mark IV. Guess it will make a nice back up body.

Mark IV Field Review
By LYNN C.
