Excellent Portability, Could Use Some Improvements

To me the Quadras seem to have more flexibility and control than any other portable system. The packs are lightweight, especially with the lithium battery. The light quality is excellent. Dialing in power with fractions of a stop increments is helpful in the field. It is best to have at least 2 packs and 2-3 heads. Their best feature is that they are tiny and lightweight.

The power limit of 400 WS is not an issue indoors for up to 2-3 people. You can cover a lot of situations with one main light, a strip light and a reflector. As a fill light solution for location shooting these are perfect. If you are shooting outside at mid day and are trying to overpower the sun or make a 2 pm sky significantly darker than the subject you will run into limitations. If you are shooting against a more subdued sky, at night or into the shade… you will be fine. The packs have a built in slave capacity and will fire with both the Sky Port Speed or Pocket Wizards. This pack is a newer model but is completely compatible with older heads and batteries that I already have.

There are three issues with the Quadra system:

the cost: for the power these are expensive units and the accessories are also overpriced. You can get 2-3 mono-lights and a couple of inverters for less. Pack & head design has some inherent advantages over mono-lights + inverters that outweigh the cost for me. 

the design of the light heads has some limits: The umbrella mount is weak. with a large umbrella you must use a stand adapter and take the weight off the head. The RQ adapter used to mate the Quadra heads to Elinchrom reflectors is also not strong enough to use with some of the larger non inverse mountable modifiers. On the plus side: the light head with an RQ adapter mates well to a 27 inch Deep Octa which makes an excellent fill source or with a 150 cm Rotalux Indirect which makes a perfect portrait light.  I find the Chimera Quadra head adapter to be very useful. I have also figured out how to mount a Quadra head to beauty dish with a stand adapter and this has become a regular choice in tight situations supported by a voice activated light stand. These lights are great on a pole where you may need the longer head cord.

the packs have 2 head outlets each but the ratio between the two outlets is fixed - this could use an upgrade to variable. 

When I made the judgement that the Quadra was the best battery driven alternative to AC gear portability was the most important factor. That comes down to system size & weight, head deployment and battery reliability/convenience. Like a lot of European gear the Quadras are physically smaller & lighter than other brands with similar capabilities. When you first see them their small size is a little disconcerting, but after carrying them around all day you fully appreciate them.
