I've owned Sony's top of the line Digitals since my (1999) FD-91, which was replaced by a DSC-F707. I go to 30-50 Rock/blues/zydeco/tejano/ shows a year and LOVE to take pictures. the advent of YouTube started allowing me to capture entire songs in NTSC quality video, and my H2 and H7's got great sound and video. Although the sound was MONO and a little tinny, it was clear and NEVER distorted, no matter how close to the amplifiers I stood. I now have more than 500 GREAT videos on youtube under RD350C. When I decided to upgrade to HD and get a longer zoom, the HX1 seemed like the ticket. I was especially impressed by the substantial looking stereo microphone on the front of the camera (previous H models had a little grill on the camera body). Unfortunately, the first time I took this camera to a show, the music came out distorted and unintelligible. The same levels were handled beautifully by my other H's. Fixing this requires a simple Pi-filter circuit that uses a little bit of voltage from the camera's battery to offset the decibels. Sony's engineers obviously forgot to include this circuitry. I am now reluctant to upgrade in the Sony line again.

I bought this camera for my girlfriend. She had taken over my old Sony F828 (my first really good digital camera). When the F828 finally succumbed to old age after over a decade of heavy use, she wanted another Sony. She loves it. Uses it several times a week. Often takes pictures of her home building sites for posting on her business blog to show customers how their new home is progressing.

I bought this as a replacement for my girlfriend's Sony F828 (one of my all time favorites). The F828 has developed a short after many years of use. So far this seems to be a great replacement. My girlfriend uses the camera for family photos and home construction job site photos. Versatile and easy to use.

It has been a while since I had a "real" camera so you must take this with a grain of salt. My husband gave this to me and its first outing was highly successful. The ease of use and the quality of picture knocked my socks off. I was like a kid in a candy store. I was worried that there'd be too much to learn but it is easy to pick up and use immediately. I'm sure there are some nuances I still need to review but overall, I'm tickled pink.

Great for people who are just getting into photography i got this with the intention of re-learning photgraphy and chose this camera because it has slr qualities such as apperture iso shutter speed control. But can also be used as a point and shoot. it has done its job very well but i have quickly outgrown it in under a year. Some things i like about thia camera are the 20x zoom, panoramic shots, 10 shot burst in under 1 second, tilting lcd screen and fairly easy to use menus. Things i hate are the slow auto focus, no hot shoe for external flash, very very slow processing time after pictures, very noisy at high iso, hard to switch from manual to auto focus. Over all this has been a great camera and i plan on using it for a long time but i will be upgrading to a canon t1i very soon so i can have more control over the images.

I got one for my self and each of my children. Then my brother saw results taken from his sailboat and got one for its zoom and stability.

Have had 4 H models, and i greatly preferred the H9 to this one. Yes the 20X is nice, and the Panorama is wonderful but i like to use Macro quite often and it just isnt up to the old model for some reason

Doesn't seem to get the best Macro as has it predecessors Will admit, the 20x zoom is awfully nice The camera is lightweight and easy to take most anywhere Seems to take slightly longer to auto focus Panorama mode is fantastic

I did alot of research into finding the right camera for me and am so happy with my purchase of the HX1. I bought it to replace my 2002 Sony Cyber shot DSC F717, which while that camera still takes nice photos (and I still use it) just did not have the video quality and zoom lens required to keep me content with my picture taking. I've been using my HX1 for several weeks now and am really enjoying it's features. I found it easy to use and the pictures it takes are wonderful. Really love the panoramic feature. It's something i have missed since putting away my 35mm camera years ago and going digital. The HX1 does not disappoint. This feature is perfect for those breathtaking scenic views. The video quality is excellent and perfect for someone interested in making their own videologs and movies, but may be difficult for editing if you don't have the right programs to convert the mp4 video format to something your video editing software will read. That's probably my only gripe and it's certainly something I can live with. The camera is lightweight but not cheap feeling. Big LCD screen is wonderful and the fact that it tilts is SO convenient! I love that this camera has a rechargeable camcorder battery like my previous camera. I have a spare that I always keep charged. I love not going through a zillion AA batteries while trying to get my perfect shot. The zoom lens is awesome and I've captured some really amazing pictures. When you zoom be sure to push part way down on button to allow the camera to focus. All in all I have more positive things to say than negative. When purchasing a camera, always do your research and find the camera that has the most features that you like. There are some great videos online about this camera. be sure to find them and check them out! Thanks Sony for making another awesome camera.

Great General Purpose Camera

I bought this camera for my girlfriend. She had taken over my old Sony F828 (my first really good digital camera). When the F828 finally succumbed to old age after over a decade of heavy use, she wanted another Sony. She loves it. Uses it several times a week. Often takes pictures of her home building sites for posting on her business blog to show customers how their new home is progressing.
The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX1 High Zoom Digital Camera has ultra-fast, 10-shots-per-second speed. Remarkable Exmor CMOS technology even makes it easy to capture photos in low light while maintaining smooth color gradation and crisp detail. Especially useful for beautiful landscape shots or shooting skyscrapers, the Sweep Panorama mode takes seamless 224-degree shots with breathtaking 9.1 megapixel results-just press the shutter and sweep in a horizontal or vertical direction.
And don't miss the 20x optical zoom or the Intelligent Auto mode that eliminates the guesswork by automatically adjusting camera settings for you. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization reduces blur for sharp, lifelike images. The HX1 features a 9.1 megapixel Exmor CMOS image sensor that brings out the full resolving power of the camera's precision G-Lens to deliver extremely fast speed, high resolution and stunning low-light sensitivity with improved image clarity and drastically reduced noise. With 9.1 megapixels, you can create stunning, photo-quality prints up to A3+ (13x19") size, or crop your images and still come away with high resolution shots.
Designed and manufactured to the highest standards of optical performance, the Sony G-Lens is optimized to perfectly complement the advanced image sensors and image processing technology in Sony's cameras. G lenses are used in top of the line digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras and advanced pro-summer HD Camcorders. Capture the action up close with the 20x optical zoom and with the 28mm wide angle lens the HX1 even allows you to capture more of the scenes in landscape or group portraits. The HX1's G Lens has a six blade aperture capable of producing a beautiful bokeh (beautifully defocused backgrounds with a soft natural feel). The aspherical lens elements made from ED (extra-low dispersion) minimize chromatic aberration common to high-magnification lenses.
