I bought this lens about three weeks ago and it is amazing. Combined with the Canon ring light it can produce stunning macro images.

This Canon EF 100mm 2.8 L portrait lens is exceptionally sharp. Because of its wide focusing range in take a little time to lock focus but in not a problem. It is an excellent close up lens and a great portrait lens as well. It's fairly compact but does sport a super large lens hood that can be annoying. The new RF version is excellent as well but it is not compatible if you shoot say an R5 and 5D.

I used to own the original non L version and I was very happy with it on my 5D II and 6D. But then sold it as I lost interest in photography. I am back now with a R5 and a RF 85 f1.2. Now I am slowly buying lenses again, and this EF 100 Macro tempted me due to it's price and I already have the Canon EF to RF adapter that I use 9n my EF 50 f1.4 and EF 16-35 F4 L without any issue. Upon inspecting the 100 macro lens, I see a dust spec under the front element, but I just tried to ignore it. 5 minutes after mounting this pens to my R5, the camera froze up, even turning the on/off switch didn't do a thing. I had to pull the battery out. This might be a one off, or will be a nightmare and I don't have time to deal with this issue, so I am returning the lens. I was told they will send me an RMA and a pre paid slip, but I still have not received the pre paid slip yet. I also have a video of it locking up, I will upload on youtube tonight when I get home from work ot maybe the next day. Another observation is the IS makes a lot of noise and drains my battery quickly unless I turn it off on the lens.

Just started using this lense but works very good. Still learning some things about it. Have a 70-210 macro lense for my Minolta 202 slr that I love. The canon lense is just as good.

Great lens, brings new perspectives to my photo & video work. I produce event video, commercial productions, funeral videos. I always seem to find creative uses for this lens. While I hadn't owned a macro until last year, I know consider it to be a mainstay in my bag. I can find interesting detail shots in nearly any environment, AND this is helpful to have an extra telephoto lens in the bag for an extra event documentary angle. Great product -AW

Purchased this Macro lens to capture more close-ups photos. Just starting to explore the settings, lighting, etc. to capture clear photos, better to use a tripod to omit any blur.

This lens was a gift from my wife for our 29th Anniversary. I have always had a fascination with macro related subjects and now I can finally try it out. Challenging, but very rewarding using something of this quality. After the first couple of shots, the price tag was easily dismissed.

I have been using the Canon 100 mm for about 15 years - non L series, which was great. However, this one is much sharper, better balanced. Only negative is that it requires adapter to use ring flash. None the less, delighted with the lens.

Great for birds in birdfeeder shot through the window, Great portraits. Good for macro, but not great like the 100mm L macro. Gives consistent results 98% of the time. Not good for very low light situations like shooting spider webs in the dark, but good with just a bit of illumination.

Beautiful macro lens that provides ultra sharp close up photography. Great for general non-macro use as well. Hood is a bit large for this type of lens, but easy to shoot without it, if too bulky.

I totally love this lens, I especially love how sharp it is! I was lucky to get this lens before Canon jacked up the price on it. I've read some comments about this being a grey market lens, well, Adorama told me they don't sell grey market cameras & lenses. Anyways, if you buy this lens you won't be sorry!

This little baby is all that I had hoped for. I had the 60mm but this is the cats meow. The images I am getting are beautifully detailed and crisp. There just isn't anything better than Canon glass. From macro close up to portraits, it does it well. I have the 70-200mm that I use a lot so this is a great addition to add into my lens family.

The EF 100mm f/2.8 L is an amazingly good lens. It is sharp, balances beautifully on my DSLR and has outstanding image stabilization. I am looking forward to spending a lot of time with this lens in the future.

I own two Canon L macro lenses: 100mm f/2.8 IS L and 180mm f/3.5 L. My 180mm macro is still my favorite. The reduced FOV and reduced DOF are great assets for a macro lens. So is the extra working distance. I prefer the 100mm for shooting wedding details, because I tend to shoot them handheld. The reduced focal length and IS make the lens easier to use handheld. The extra half stop helps in low light conditions for weddings. The 100mm f/2.8 IS L Macro is a great lens. I wish it came with a tripod collar. You need to purchase one separately. Canon is especially proud of its tripod collar, so the price is high. I bought a third-party that even included an Arca-Swiss base, so I did need an additional expense for a lens plate from Kirk Enterprises (my preference for camera L-brackets and lens plates) or Really Right Stuff. I also wish the lens used 77mm filters, like almost all of my other Canon L lenses. It's 67mm. I hate step down rings, since they tend to bind and are difficult to remove. I had to buy a set of Polar Pro filters in 67mm, as a consequence.

First off, I do not own this lens. And won't. I'm a bit miffed as are others about this price hike on this lens. Hoped it would be a Christmas present but the price hike has taken it out of my range. If there was a reason for the hike, please tell us what it is!

Awesome lens! I've been very happy with this purchase. I've ended up using it more for portraits than for macro, but I look forward to exploring macro more.

Multi use 100mm Macro. I use it for portraits too but focusing for more than headshots becomes a challenge.

This 100mm 2.8 IS Macro is just crazy. Tack sharp wide open (amazing for portraits), superb resolving power even on a 5D Mark III, and the Hybrid IS... WOW, not only is it amazing for still shots, but for VIDEO! It's like having a gyro or SteadyCam. And for the price, this could be Canon's best value-per-dollar lens. I've owned the non IS version which is a great lens, and I do own the 70-200mm/2.8 IS II which obviously can hit this focal length, but the lightweight 10omm with the Hybrid IS a...

Before you delve into the world of macro photography or portrait artistry, consider the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens. This high-quality, professional-grade lens is a part of Canon's prestigious L-series, renowned for its robust and sophisticated design.
Designed with precision in mind, this lens is perfect for capturing life's minute details with a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification and a minimum focusing distance of just 11.8 inches. Whether you're capturing the intricate patterns of a butterfly's wings or the delicate details of a diamond ring, this lens ensures your subject is always in sharp focus.
The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens is not just for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, but also compatible with APS-C models, offering an equivalent focal length of 160mm. This adaptability makes it a reliable and versatile choice for photographers using different Canon camera bodies.

The lens also features a ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) and an internal focusing design for swift and silent autofocus performance. For photographers who prefer full control, the manual focus override feature ensures you're always in charge of the final image.
The Focus Limiter switch allows you to select from three distinct focus ranges, optimizing speed in focusing: 11.8" to 1.6', 1.6' to infinity, and the comprehensive 11.8" to infinity span.
Bokeh lovers will appreciate the lens' rounded nine-blade diaphragm, which contributes to a beautiful out-of-focus quality, perfect for those who cherish shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As part of Canon's esteemed L-series, this lens is diligently sealed against dust and moisture, making it a durable choice for any photography expedition. For enhanced functionality, an optional rotating tripod collar can be added, making it ideal for use with tripods or monopods.
In conclusion, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens is a high-quality, professional, reliable, durable, and innovative choice for both macro and portrait photography.
