Outstanding value

Delivers outstanding performance at an incredibly affordable price point. Its wide maximum aperture of f/1.8 allows for excellent low-light shooting and creates beautiful background separation with smooth, creamy bokeh. The lens is remarkably sharp, making it ideal for portraits, street photography, and everyday shooting. Definitely a must have

In the shade.

Love my 50mm f1.8 lens! Wonderful to shoot indoors and in the shade outside. I can use the lowest aperture and use sjutter speed to light up face.. i didn't even use a flash and my subject was still clear. I get a perfect blur background when I do close ups. I also shot skateboarders and get the quick action shots. Love it!!

Great Image, Slow Auto-focus

For $126 this lens is an absolute steal. It is tack sharp, the bokeh is beautiful, and it is lightweight. However, the reason I gave this 4 stars, not 5 is because the auto-focus is a little slow and the focus ring feels extremely fragile. Overall great lens that I would recommend to anyone.

The 50 mm S TM lens is very unique in every aspect. The s TM motor inside of it is so quiet. It's great for video micro video. It's just an amazing lens.

Affordable, fast, fun!

Everybody knows about the nifty fifty! It's a wonderfully small prime lens that has a fast aperture for a cheap price. The STM variant does seems quite a bit better from the previous version. I have used this lens on my Canon T3, T5i, and now my R8. It works perfectly for portraits or if you need more light in darker situations. It is softer at f/1.8, but sharpens up around f/2.8, which is still perfectly usable. It's a little tight on crop though, but I felt it was was easier to use on full frame for more everyday situations. I'm mostly planning on switching to the RF 35mm, but the 50mm is still an invaluable tool to have in most photographer's and even videographer's bag.

Your first prime lens?

Exactly what I ordered. I suggest to check if your camera is a crop sensor or not before buying this, because it makes a difference in the lens' purpose. I would recommened it to my friends. I have a Canon Rebel Eos T5i.

This lens is AWESOME!

I haven't been doing photography for that long (around 2 years), so I went looking for a lens on a budget. My main focus is sports photography, so I was hoping to find a cheap lens that would perform good in low-light situations so that I could take decent photos in gyms and/or outside when it is darker. After 5 months of using this lens, I can say that it is 100% worth it! You cannot go wrong with buying this lens! I can take clear, bright pictures in gyms without much noise in the images. I can get cool, wide angle night shots outside during football games. I use this lens on my Canon M50 with an EF to EFM adapter. 50mm gets you close enough to the action for basketball, volleyball, hockey, and more, but it isn't as fun to use during football games where the field is larger and the action is further away. My only complaint is that this lens doesn't zoom, but the pros far outweigh this issue. If you're a beginner and/or need a budget lens, this is the lens for you! I have taken so many awesome pictures with it and it has made my photography better. :)

A Must!

Whether you are starting out in photography, growing in your photography, or a pro having this lens is a must. Why? For one it?s cheap, light, sharp, and fast. No it?s 1.4 no it?s not 1.2, but it?s also just over a hundred bucks! On a crop sensor you have a portrait lens. On full frame you have a do anything lens. Wide enough for some landscapes, tight enough for street, close enough to get a new perspective on portraits. Easy yes on this one!

Great for travel and you cant beat the price

The cost of this lens blows my mind. You can capture images with this lens that match a $1k or even $2k lens. It is light, small, and easy to travel with. Plus f1.8 is really all you need. I have a f1.2 and honestly never shoot at f1.2. I mostly use larger more expensive L lenses but many times will throw this lens in my bag when traveling just because of how small and light it is. People can never tell the difference between an image I took with this lens vs one of my L lenses. My complaint about it is it is hard to manual focus the lens if the AF is on. I have to make sure to turn it to MF to focus manually. Also the AF is loud and slow. But what can you expect for the price. The image quality is great.

FEATURED REVIEWS

Every Canon SLR user should have one

By Blake

There are two things that any new Canon SLR owner should acquire as a bare minimum along with their new camera if they are at all serious about learning creative photography and making pleasing images, no matter how restricted their budget or how small their bag. One of them is the 220EX flash, and the other is this 50mm f/1.8 prime. They are both so small, light, inexpensive, and just downright useful that any photographer can carry them in any situation. Let's get something straight here: ...

This is your second lens

This isn't the lens that you go pro with, but it's a great learning tool. The fixed focal length means you have to think a good bit more about positioning yourself to take the shot. Also, with the wide aperture you will be able to take natural light photographs and put away that awful pop-up flash. Once you start paying attention to how you compose your shot and what light you have to work with, I assure you will you improve your skills. This is the primary reason this should be your first ad...

CANON EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens

What does it take to elevate a standard lens to an extraordinary lens? It takes a lens capable of doing a little bit of everything—a renaissance lens, if you will. Meet the CANON EF 50mm f/1.8 II, a renaissance lens for the modern photographer, capable of meeting a range of demands, including:

Product Highlights

  • Low-light scenarios. They’re difficult for many standard lenses to handle, but the excellent color balance of the Canon 50mm ensures accurate low-light photographs time and time again.
  • Lightweight construction means you can easily interchange this standard lens when it’s time to turn to a different tool in your photographer’s toolbox.
  • Consistent output might be the most important factor here, and the diligent construction and simple design of this Canon 50mm lens offers consistent output even in a wide range of photographic demands.

Want standard? Buy any old lens. But if you want a standard lens that truly performs, then it’s time to put some thought into your go-to lens.

Learn about the CANON EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens

In the photography industry, the word “standard” gets thrown around a lot. A “standard” lens is a lens that handles just about everything you can throw at it, doing no one particular task with any exceptional quality. But a “standard” lens like the CANON EF 50mm f/1.8 II may officially be “standard,” but you should expect nothing less than exceptional quality.

But how do you know when a lens like this Canon-50mm is indeed above the “standard,” ordinary lenses you’ll see out there on the market? What elevates its photography game high above the other standard lenses out there, giving you exceptional picture quality at “standard” prices? Let’s look beyond what’s “standard” about this lens and find out where it truly shines:

  • Color balance. We can’t talk about a lens like the CANON EF 50mm f/1.8 II without mentioning the astounding color balance. As any professional photographer knows, color balance can be one of the most underrated variables in any photo. When there’s something “off” about a photo but you can’t quite put your finger on it, you should ask yourself about the color balance. Luckily this lens performs above and beyond the “standard” by offering color balance that doesn’t oversaturate; instead the colors are lush, accurate, and highly attractive in each and every shot. This makes the Canon 50mm ideal for a number of events, including wedding receptions and even run-of-the-mill studio shoots.
  • Low light is a concern with any lens you acquire, whether or not it’s standard. The Canon 50mm delivers well in low light conditions, as it’s well suited for night photography and dimly lit events such as wedding receptions and night club promotions. Grabbing enough quality light in these poorly-lit conditions often requires a big “above-standard” aperture, but this Canon lens offers a surprising amount of detailing even in conditions that other standard lenses might not handle so well.
  • Both near-to-far focusing distances will work exceptionally well with the Canon 50mm, which is a must-have on any standard, versatile lens. You need to be able to take near and far shots at a moment’s notice, especially when you don’t have the time to switch out for a new lens. That’s why it’s so important that your go-to lens be capable of handling near and far shots with the right focus and the proper accuracy.
  • Consistency is key as well, and if there’s anything the Canon 50mm has, it’s consistency. It starts with clear glass that makes for crystal-clear photographs, not to mention quality construction that ensures each lens element is in the right place. Consistency in photographs is easy to attain when you’re dealing with a multitude of lenses, but when you stick to one standard lens, you need to know that every shot will come out looking right.
  • Little details about a standard lens add up to a lot the more you use them: durability, interchangeability, easy mounting, fast autofocus, low-light conditions, how light it is, etc. That’s where the Canon 50mm truly shines, offering exactly what you need out of your standard lens at every corner.

If you want a standard lens that’s hard working and capable of working in just about any environment, there are a lot of quality lenses out there that will do the job. But if you want consistency and excellent color balance, only the Canon 50mm will suffice.

From the Manufacturer
This is the lightest EF lens of all at a mere 4.6 oz. (130g). Compact and high-performance, standard lens. Its Gaussian optics provide sharp delineation from near to far focusing distances. The color balance is excellent for a standard lens.
