An excellent 50mm lens

The Sony DT 50mm f/1.8 SAM is a budget-friendly, versatile prime lens designed for Sony's APS-C DSLR cameras. Its wide aperture makes it a popular choice for photographers seeking to enhance their low-light capabilities and achieve a more cinematic look in their photos and videos. Key Features: * Fast f/1.8 Aperture: Allows shooting in low-light conditions without sacrificing image quality. * Compact and Lightweight: Ideal for travel and everyday photography. * Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM): Ensures quick and accurate focus acquisition. * Affordable Price: This makes it a great option for beginners and budget-conscious photographers. Performance: * Image Quality: While the DT 50mm f/1.8 SAM may not be the sharpest lens, it delivers respectable image quality, especially when stopped down to f/2.8 or f/4. The wide aperture creates beautiful bokeh effects, making it suitable for portrait photography. * Autofocus: The SAM technology provides smooth and relatively fast autofocus performance in both photo and video. * Build Quality: The lens is constructed primarily of plastic, but it feels sturdy enough for everyday use. Overall: The Sony DT 50mm f/1.8 SAM is a solid choice for photographers looking for a budget-friendly prime lens with a wide aperture. Its performance, especially in low-light conditions, makes it a valuable addition to any APS-C DSLR kit. This lens offers excellent value for money and is a great way to explore the creative possibilities of a fixed focal length lens.

A great fast lens for A mount cameras

I purchased this lens because I wanted a fast lens at a reasonable price. I was not disappointed! It gives me crisp photos in low light and because it is fast it helps reduce the effects of camera shake from a 70 year old.

Excellent Lens that expands one's ability to take fantastic images

This is a great product that enables one to truly take advantage of the benefits of the 50 mm lens - at an extremely affordable price point. The only issue I have experienced is that the auto focus mode is a bit jittery and noisy at times. I have, however, been able to deal with that issue using the Manual mode.

Excellent

After years of using a kit lens, I searched and searched for a lens that I could capture everything my kit lens couldn't. I truly cannot wait to take this on my travels.

Great overall lens

Very good lens overall - good low light performance, auto-focus is pretty quick and image quality is very good for the price. Paired this with a A77ii recently for a CrossFit event and was quite impressed with the results. Only negatives are while the auto-focus is quick it is very noisy and the build quality is a little subpar, but for the price excellent lens

Very cheaply made and noisy

Ordered this lens in hopes it would be the dream nifty 50 for Sony. Not do much. It focused find and was sharp. The auto focus sounded like it was working on sand paper, felt cheap. Returned the item with no hassle. Found a used Minolta 50mm f/1.7 less than half the price quiet and solid feeling.

Light and sharp

I've been thinking of buying a prime lens for some time and decided to take the plunge. If you only own zoom lenses this lens will make you think about your photography it will make you get involved with your subject it will make you think about what you want it will stop you being lazy,it will make you bold .Its light it takes sharp images ,great depth of field ,great indoors in low light what more do you want from a lens .

my first fixed

Learned a lot from this lens when it comes to composing and shooting objects. With that said, this lens like everyone says is perfect for low light and/or shooting objects, nice bokeh etc. However the main reason i purchased this lens is for portraits basing it on other reviews i thought this lens would work for me but it didn't. This lens on APS-C is not that great for portrait as expected it makes some people's faces look wide. Shoot with caution when shooting people with this lens. I'm jumping to the next 1 on the line which is 85mm.

I bought this as an introductory Prime lens and so far it performs as I expected, a nice, basic 50mm lens with good speed.

Sony 50mm F1.8

The lens is a bargain, and produces very sharp images, with the kind of de- focused backgrounds I want for portraiture...I could spend a lot more money for a lens with an incremental better quality image, but for my purposes I am very satisfied.

Good quality from Sony...AGAIN

Serious amatuer photographers on a budget will love this lens. Great photos are captured with its f/1.8 aperature. Great for cropped-sensor cameras, it takes stunning portraits, and its fixed focal length is a winner for those days when you need to carry light for your street photography outings. It boasts a super smooth (and quiet) autofocus. While it doesn't affect the performance of this lens whatsoever, it doesn't come with a lens hood. It would have been nice to include one for that time when you absolutely need it.

Excellent Lens

Probably one of the best bang-for-your-buck lenses out there. Its an incredibly versatile prime lens that takes very sharp images with the nice bokeh that everyone is looking for these days. This lens should be the first lens you buy after advancing from the kit lens that came with your camera. You will not be disappointed with this lens.

love it love the price love almost everything if it had a little more build quality ..such as metal mounting plate to the camera body it wouldn't seem so gimicky that said its a great lens at a great price and im very happy with it the focus motor seems a little noisey but most times i have it in manual hope this helps you make your mind up

don't waste your time!

Hello everyone, it is all my fault for buying cheep, this lens has a Red outline on the subjects, it gives a sheep look to the picture, this could work for some people if that is the look you are after. Best Wishes Milton

A good buy... BUT...

I bought this lens because I really wanted a portrait lens with a wide aperture, and I was very excited to get it. But upon buying it, I've noticed that pictures I've taken where my subject is in direct sunlight or is backlit, are subjected to EXTREME color fringing. The lens is great, and the fringing is easily corrected in Lightroom, but it is just a big let down that my images are fringing so badly. The lens takes semi-sharp images, and is great for what it is, but that color fringing is just such a huge deterring factor for recommending it to anyone else. Overall, it's an awesome prime lens. It has the ability to produce really shallow depth of field and works great in low light conditions. On the flip side though, the images aren't as sharp as they should be and color fringing is far too noticeable.

Excellent lens for the price!

I decided to wait a few weeks and put the lens through projects requiring a 50mm lens. I was completely impressed with the capabilities of this lens in relation to the price. It delivered crisp tack sharp images over and over without requiring minute adjusting on my part. I have read other reviews if this lens where the reviewed complained that is was "plastic" feeling. It doesn't matter how it feels, it matters how it delivers image quality. This lens is ideal if you need a 50mm prime, and most people do!

Incredible

This lens is fantastic. The photos are sharp, and it's fast so you can easily capture those shots in lower light. A no brainer, this should be one of the first lenses you add to your collection.

this is the only lens I ever use. I use it for landscape, portraits, even macro (hah!). throw away the kit lens and buy this, worth every penny.

Great lens

By willdirosa98

I got this lens about 1 month ago and I love it, it's great for bokeh in portraits and for night time shooting. It's a must have lens, I had the 18-55mm and 75-300mm lenses but niether were good for night time shooting so I needed a prime lens like this. I recomend to buy this lens :)

Make your subject stand out - DT 50mm F1.8 SAM Portrait Lens (SAL50F18)
With its bright F1.8 maximum aperture, the SAL50F18 is ideal for framing and isolating your subject even if it's competing with a busy background.

• Compact, lightweight, easy to carry
• Circular aperture for smooth, natural defocusing
• Responsive internal SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor) AF drive
• Bright enough for handheld shooting in low light
• 35mm equivalent focal length: 75mm

The Sony SAL-50F18 boasts a large aperture which makes it easy to get great-looking portrait shots. The SAL50F18 is one of the first fixed focal length lenses in the DT series, which is designed exclusively for a DSLRs that use an APS-C type sensor. Make the move from the standard zoom and explore the world of portrait photography with the SAL-50F18 lens for your a DSLR camera.

Say goodbye to blur - Pair the lens with a Sony camera with SteadyShot INSIDE and you'll enjoy smooth, blur-free results when shooting handheld, even zoomed in.

Smooth defocusing - Instead of a standard polygon-shaped lens aperture, this lens features a 7-blade circular aperture for more natural, rounded defocusing, or bokeh.

Refined optical performance - Multiple lens elements crafted from high-performance optical glass help minimize distortion and aberrations, giving you crisp, sharp images.

Smooth, silent autofocus - Built into the lens, the Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) is significantly smoother and quieter than conventional camera-coupled autofocus drive systems.

Sony 50mm f/1.8 DT AF SAM Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Cameras Features

  • SteadyShot INSIDE In-Camera Image Stabilization: A major reason for its compact, lightweight lens design is the benefit of SteadyShot INSIDE in-camera image stabilization, enabling lenses to eliminate the extra weight and expense of in-lens stabilization mechanisms
  • DT Lens Design: A more compact, lightweight lens designed specifically for the APS-size CCD imager used in some Sony a (alpha) DSLR cameras
  • Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM): The built-in Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) eliminates the need to use a mechanical coupling system in the camera body to transfer auto focus (AF) drive power and control signals to the lens
  • ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass: To reduce chromatic aberration at telephoto extension, correcting certain wavelengths of light for sharp, clear images with well defined colors
  • Circular Aperture: Because aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect
