A good and reasonably priced wireless solution is not an easy find these days. For a long time I used a cheap dual wireless system from China with two bodypacks. It wasn't a bad setup but each channel's frequency was fixed which led to some interesting interference issues once in a while. Since I was using handheld mics more than lavs these days I decided to go with two plug-in Azden 35XT transceivers and the dual receiver (330UPR) for my audio solution. First, one of the 35XT units arrived DOA. I had to pay to ship it back to the company directly and after a few days they shipped a replacement unit back to me under warranty. It wasn't a good sign, but I kept an open mind. The build on these units isn't the greatest but it is suitable. They are mostly plastic with a little metal. The screw-in XLR locks seem to fit securely but the black paint coating is already chipping after just a few uses. Not happy about that at all. It's just cosmetic though. My biggest complaint with these units and the 330UPR is that they are very difficult to read in low light situations. None of the LED readouts have a backlight. You have to shine a light on them if you want to see what you are doing. The quality of the audio is very good for the most part. Frequency response seems flat across the board. Channel selection is an easy process with the provided tool. If you lose the tool a simple pen can be used. I read on other sites that people using this Azden product had been experiencing major dropouts. I have experienced a couple drop-outs myself but not major ones yet, just minor. I changed the locations while shooting which corrected the problem but I may not have an option to change locations next time and if it's a live interview or one shot deal, I may lose critical audio. Again, it hasn't happened yet and I hope it never does! If I have any major audio drop-outs I will make note of that here in the future. I wanted to really give this a 3.5 star rating but there are no half stars. So for now I'm giving it three, mostly because I had to pay out of pocket to return the brand new unit that was DOA. Overall not too bad. I'm hoping that my experiences moving forward will bring that 3.5 star rating up to a 4 or more. We'll see!
