Like the lens. Wish it was a 2.8 f Low light is difficult withou a flash

I really like the lens however when shooting at a gallery (no flash allowed) in low light I am limited to very shallow depth of fields and even then slow shutter speeds.

Great Lens for Photo Walking with my 5D

I bought this Canon EF 28-135 IS lens used and it is excellent for photo walking / travel photography with my Canon 5D Classic (which I also bought used). Both this EF 28-135 IS Lens and my Canon 5D classic were purchased used grade E from Adorama. I am really enjoying my full-frame photography experience with the lens-camera combination.

easy clear pictures

I shoot landscape, animal and grandkids with this lens. It is easy to focus, takes very clear pictures and gives the extra power needed for the photos taken within 30ft.

This lens stays on camera 95% of time

This lens gives great range from 28 to 135 mm. So it is a general everyday lens that get use 90% or more. It also has fast AF and well constructed. Although not an L lens, the price is very competitive compare to other similar products.

Not as happy as I thought I would be.

I shoot mostly landscapes and dabble in portraits. The lens is pretty good at F/8 for most situations that have a subject other than landscape. For landscape photos its fair but not worth the price tag Canon put on it. For macro shots it's also fair but then again, the price! I get the same quality out of this lens as I do one of Canon's lowest end lenes (18-55mm). Although my experience with this lens is for the most part O-K I'm a bit disappointed in it. My advice to anyone who wants to try it, try to shoot using F/8, it has the best results.

Perfect match for my 50D!

I was looking for the perfect, all around useful lens with OS and a decent zoom range to replace my previous Sigma 18-200 mm DC lens. So far, my image tests have been quite impressive! It's the perfect match on my 50D for all around shooting. I would also like to extend a hardy thank you to Adorama for offering this great lens at almost $100 less than [@]! Shipping was free and I still got it delivered the next day!

everyday lens

bought the 5D body only, needed an everyday lens, this is it. No complaints so far. My husbands in a band and I use this lens to take general shots of the band and the crowd. I have used it to shoot landscapes, portraits, candids, all good so far.

Not Terribly Impressed

Purchased this lens w/ 7D hoping it would make a good general purpose non macro lens for field herpetology (study of reptiles and amphibians). It does not work well for that. The problem is if the lens is pointed down, the focal length creeps, especially while it is focusing. If you are looking for a lens to capture your family vacation it is a nice light weight lens that focuses relatively fast, but if you going to be photographing object on the ground, look for a different lens.

A Vesatile Lens for Close to Medium Work

My brother, a commercial photographer, recommended this lens as it can be used for close to medium distances, thus saving all those lens changes in the field or during an event. I use it mostly for indoor Knights of Columbus activities such as conferences, awards banquets, fundraising events, formal dinner dances, etc. Anywhere that has people moving about, speaking, etc that would cause me to have to move about, thus varying the distance-to-subject.

Great replacement for 60D kit lens

Fantastic clarity and great focal length. Good, rugged construction compared to 18-55 kit lens. No comparison! This is a fantastic walk around lens, it does it all at a respectable price.

Versatile, good build quality

My first lens on my 7D. It is versatile, and when I am not using my primes, it stays on the camera. The lens creeps when I wear it on my shoulder, but this is not a huge problem (I am told I can solve this with a goody elastic band). A great lens for the money (especially if it came in a kit) it has USM, IS and feels sturdier than some other low end zooms. No it is not the 24-105 L, but it costs 1000 less and is pretty good.

No Longer Quality Made !

Ok to replace a 18-55mm kit lens, but that is about it. The Zoom Ring is loose, and continuous Lens Creep is a Nuisance. The Barrel of the lens shows no quality, and in time will loosen even more, which will allow dirt and dust to get inside the elements. If you own a Rebel, or a 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D or 60D camera, do yourself a favor and look at the EFS Lenses. If you own a Full Frame Camera, go with an "L" Lens. This lens design was made years ago in Japan, when Quality was an issue. Now the lens design is dated, and the Quality has been Outsourced to further reduce the appeal of this lens. Very Disappointed with Canon to even allow this Lens to leave the factory, or clear their Quality Control area. I own an EFS 17-85mm Lens, and a EFS 17-55mm Lens to compare this one with!

Great Starter Lens

This lens came as a kit lens with the Eos 7D. Optically, I've found it to be reasonably sharp at all focal lengths. Sharpness peaks around f5.0 to f5.6 with my experiences. The USM focusing motor works very well and focuses accurately and quietly. Construction is good, though the barrel does wobble just a little bit. Still, the zoom ring feels good and smooth, and the plastics feel much more solid than other EF-S lens I've used. Image Stabilization is always a plus. My only complaint is the lack of wide angle. I find that when shooting portrait work, I always have to back up a lot more to get a full body shot. On a 1.6x sensor, the 28mm is really working at 44mm. I would call this more of a lens to use for medium telephoto work. I have done some Marco shooting with this lens and it's reasonably well considering that's not its purpose. All things considered. It's a good lens that you can learn and grow with that doesn't have too many weaknesses, but if you to shoot wide-angle landscapes, you may need to consider another lens for such work.

I love this lens. I have owned it for a short period of time. Used it at a bridal shower and was very pleased with the zoom from wide angle to nice tight close ups.

Great Walkaround Lens

First, this isn't an L-series lens, so let's not treat it as such. This lens is an upper-range consumer lens, and I find it excellent. The images it takes are very sharp on an APS-C sensor, and sharp on a full frame sensor. While unnoticable on APS-C sensors, on full frame sensors there is a noticable bit of soft focusing at either range of its focal length (28mm and 135mm). The IS works great, and enables me to take pictures in low light. The USM is something many new photographers will find amazing. Very fast and quiet autofocusing, and the lens allow you to manually focus without having to switch to "M" (or in other words, you can manually focus even when set to "A"). The only issue I have with this lens is lens creep. While not an issue for me (The hood + lens filter prevent any scratches or impacts on the end of the barrel), it may be troublesome for beginner photographers and pros who need to take quick, rapid shots. In short, this is a very great lens for the money. Great focal range, does well in low light, has a USM AF motor, but has a downside of some rather annoying lens creep. If you don't have $ to spend on an L-series lens, then you should definitely consider this lens.

good lens

I like this lens for portraits, but the big complaint that I have is that it's not very sharp and the bokeh is not anything to write home about. I do a lot of engagement, couples and children photography-which is why I bought this lens. After using it, I think I would save my money and buy the Canon EF 135 mm f/2 L. But, have a blurred background (ie great bokeh) might not be that important to everyone like it is to me. On the other hand, it is GREAT for macros. I've used it a lot with flower photography and it does wonders. It really just depends on what you're wanting out of it... if you want a sharp lens, with great bokeh, don't get this one. If that's not important to you, then this will do the trick :)

Great all around lens

This is a wonderful all around lens. For the price (under 1/2 the price of the L series 24-105) it is well built, focuses quickly and quietly, produces consistent images and the IS works well. If you can't afford and L lens or are just looking for a cheap all around lens, this is it.

Fantastic walkaround

Great range, Image stabilizer is fantastic. I've shot landscapes down to 1/6 handheld without problems. Usm does a great job focusing, not to mention it's full time so those little adjustments can be made without going into "M" Nice and quiet. Metal mount. When you zoom the lens tubes are exposed. Dust can make its way into the lens through those. I have a few spots internally. 28 isn't quite wide enough for 1.6 bodies though so i find myself standing back.

Yeah ... NO

Yeah .. no. The lens creep right off the bat - and I'm very careful with my equipment. Maybe because I shoot prime lenses ... the image quality is not sharp enough (for me). Color is great. The focal range is great. The IS is great. If you're on a budget and want a good range in a lens - this lens would be a good choice. There are people out there that have coaxed beautiful images from this lens. I don't want to work that hard. The way I see it, life is short - buy sharp lenses! I went for the 17-40 4L and the 70-200 4L - I cannot tell you how colorful and tack sharp those lenses are. Hold tight and save up for one of those if you can. Or a 50mm 1.4 prime lens. Man, do they take great images.

Good at a lot, great at little

This is the lens you have when you have no idea what sort of subject matter you'll be encountering. Fairly good distance, lets you be fairly close as well. Have been noticing an annoying amount of lens creep, and there's no locking band to stop that from happening. In conclusion, solid all-purpose lens, but you're probably going to want specific lenses to get the maximum results when you know what you'll be running into.

I'm Happy . . . .

I'm slowly starting to sell prints. I take my photography very seriously but have not had the money to begin exploring the pricier equipment. In the past year I have worked primarily with the Canon EF primes (50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8 USM) and have been very happy with the image quality (IQ) and AF speed. While dreaming of L glass but simply not able to lay out the cash, I needed to find a zoom that would deliver sharp IQ for less money. I found the 28-135mm USM and after going through scads of reviews and really stressing about laying out the money for a lens that some question in quality I finally went for it. I could not be happier with this lens. Excellent AF speed and quiet focus, really nice, sharp IQ with excellent color saturation and then there is the IS. Image stabilization is new to me and now I'm thoroughly enjoying this added feature. I have shot with a friend's 24-70mm L and I get the appeal but I'm here to tell you that I am just as satisfied with this 28-135mm. A lot of the reviews I read helped to initially dissuade me by comparing this lens to the 24-105mm L and, first, I think it is a poor comparison. The L series is the cadillac of the Canon line. This lens is a mid-range consumer lens but I'm telling you it more than fits the bill. If the focal reach is what you're looking for, if you are okay with a 28mm wide on a cropped frame and you have the money, just buy it. You will be happy. The only issue I have right now is the lens creep which is actually pretty bad but, for the price and performance, I will make allowances. Thanks to Canon for putting out this lens that professionals and amateurs can respect and utilize!

Soft in one corner

Mine is very soft (ie blurry) in the bottom right corner. Maybe I got a bad copy, but I have seen the exact same description on at least one other review. Overall sharpness is so-so, acceptable for small prints but not great on enlargements. Also, my zoom is now starting to stick.

Fairly good value

Not a bad lens for the money. Good close-up performance at wide-angle settings. Just got this lens to get by 'til I can buy some L-glass. Overall a pretty good walk-around lens even though it has very bad lens-creep.

Nice surprise

Cons: Has some lens creep, more as the lens gets older. It will extend out to about 105mm if the camera is facing down. Not as fast as I would like. Slight noise from the IS. Wish it had a included hood. Pros: My copy seems very sharp. Seems pretty durable for the price. Focus is pretty good in lowlight. Image Stabilization works really well despite this being an older design. Good zoom range. This is the lens that stays on the camera 90% of the time.

About Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Image Stabilized Autofocus Wide Angle Telephoto Zoom Lens

The ideal everyday standard zoom lens.
The EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM offers a 5x zoom range, from wide angle to telephoto. The lens also features Image Stabilization and is compact and lightweight, making it suitable for everyday use.

• Three-stop Image Stabilizer
• Fast, quiet autofocus
• Super Spectra coating
• Circular aperture for pleasing background blur
• Passes distance information to E-TTL II
• Optional lens hood

Standard zoom lens with an Image Stabilizer and high zoom ratio. With the Image Stabilizer turned on, you can obtain sharp, natural-looking pictures in dim lighting without using flash or a tripod. Very handy for places where flash is prohibited. Uses ring-type USM for swift, silent autofocus and full-time manual focus. Closest focusing distance is 20" (50cm).

Image Stabilizer
A three-stop Image Stabilizer enables hand-held shooting in low light conditions, even at the telephoto end of the zoom scale. Handy for taking pictures when the use of a flash or tripod is not allowed.

Ultrasonic focusing
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.

Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate color balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting - a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.
