I used this lens for taking soccer pictures at our local soccer club. It was fast on the focus and the quick zooming was a great asset.

Pictures are sharp. This is my first experience with image stabilization which was the reason I bought the lens. The image stabilization works great. This is a good lens at a good price.

I've only played around with this lens one day, but found it a great buy for the money.

I use this lens for outdoor and wildlife photography. It is well balanced and fairly fast. An added plus for me, I bought the lens used ( rated E+). The lens hood was included, can't tell the difference between my used lens and a new one. Used is a great way to go when purchased from a good dealer like Adorama.

Lens came very fast and did not look "refurbished" at all. It's an excellent, inexpensive telephoto with IS that every Canon owner should have. The other noteworthy thing is that I expected the IS version and they sent the IS II instead. After researching both, I see that the II is newer which people say received only cosmetic changes (no silver ring, wording & font changes etc) but you never know. It looks brand new. Buy It!

I absolutely love this lens! I use this lens more than any of my other ones and it definitely works like new. Images turn out great. It's not too heavy but if you use this lens you should definitely use a tripod or have something to support while shooting. Other than that, LOVE IT.

Best price ever! <3 Why buy new lens, if you can purchase refurbished (tested) lens for 1/2 of price :)

This lens is ideal for someone on a budget or who wants the range but knows it may get infrequent use. Produces sharp images and has a decent build quality considering it's low price point. I believe it's an underrated lens. The refurb. I purchased cannot be told from new...very pleased with condition and performance of this lens on my T2i.

Very sharp lens; useful focal range; small, light, easy to carry; image stabalization; good construction considerng price; it is a slow lens, but again price is right; very pleased with lens & can recommend without reservation for those on a budget looking for a lens capable of delivering sharp photos.

I was able to purchase this lens here for half of what it costs new (based on this amazing used lens rating system here.) I haven't spent a ton of time with the L series of lens so it's hard to even try to compare this to that glass. I will say that for me (not having a ton of zoom lens experience,) I was hoping that it would zoom in farther. I think that if you are considering this and don't understand the compression of the background then you should google that before you buy this. It's in an interesting range...sometimes I pull the camera up and the subject is too close, but say if there's a bird or something I want a shot of...it doesn't zoom as much as you would hope. These are not complaints! It's more a matter of getting used to the distance you should be using it for. So I would say it's best for subjects that are close but you want to fill the screen with (not macro there is no option for it) or subjects that are short to medium distance away. To me, the background compression is the biggest difference between this and other lenses I have. I can't comment on durability because I haven't had it for very long. It's very light, it feels like one drop could ruin it (isn't that how lenses are though?)

Love to travel and always looking for the unusual shot. The type that makes for memories. Nice range of voom on the lens and quick auto focus with the extra stability make it easier to get the extra unusual shot.

I like the range of focus. I use this lens for portrates and candids. I also use it to photograph birds on my bird feeders. Tranquild scenes, rushing waters of a waterfall and more. I take this lens with me everywhere.

This lens looks as if it is brand new. I couldn't tell it wasn't new. it came very well packaged to protect it during shipment. It take's great pictures from what time I have been able to use it. It arrived exactly when Adorama said it would. Would i recommend this refurbished lens. I most definately woud for anyone that want's a 55-250 at a very reasonable price and to save some money.

I'm not very happy with this lens. I bought it and it's basically sat in my bag because I can't find a use for it. You absolutely MUST use a tripod with this lens if you want sharp images. The lens creep is pretty tough to work around. By seeing the other reviews, maybe I just haven't found the right use for it because I don't use it often.

When I rate a product, I make form my opinion based on overall value. When I rate something high, that means there may be better similar products but they will usually be much more expensive. There may also be cheaper ones but they will lack the quality. With that said, this lens in my opinion is one of the very best values on the market. The sharpness that can be achieved cannot be had for any less money than this. The refurbished product is in pristine condition and if setting next to a new product you would not be able to tell the difference. In fact, when it comes to lenses I often wonder if refurbished glass isn't better than new since refurbs are tested to meet specs before they sell them while new just come straight off the line into a box. Either way, this one does not disappoint. It can be a bit soft at 55mm as compared to the 50mm f1.8 but even compared to the kit lens, it is much sharper. I've worked with lenses that cost much more that weren't as sharp. Overall I believe this is the best value available for this type of lens and when combined with a kit lens gives a user a range of 18-250mm in two lenses that is much sharper than the 18-250 lens that costs four times as much.

I needed an inexpensive zoom with more reach than the 18-55mm kit lens that came with my camera, and after researching some of the professional photographer blogs, I decided to go with this lens. It feels a little "sloppy", but that is to be expected at this price point. Optically, it delivers very good images. No, it will not compete with the 70-200 2.8, but at a fraction of the price, I am very satisfied with my purchase.

This is my first long lens - and it is a good start. I was impressed by the level of the picture. It is a bit on the light side and feels a bit plastic (for me this is not a negative - just a fact) I use it mostly for family outside pics... and am very happy.

It offered a great range at an affordable price. Yes, there are better out there, but not everyone can afford those f2.8s. It got the job done, and did it very well. I've since upgraded, and passed this lens on to a friend who is loving every second of it. This past weekend, I wished I still had it when I wanted zoom but was afraid for the safety of my more expensive lens.

I have been very pleasantly surprised at the sharpness delivered by this low cost lens. I've tried a number of other lenses including some superzooms of the $700+ variety and not one of them holds a candle to this lens. Sure, it only goes down to 55mm, but when you add it to the 18-55mm kit lens you have a very nice beginner set with a very wide range and great overall sharpness. Of course, it is a budget lens, so the sharpness falls off as you open the lens up. At around f8-f16 though I have yet to see a non L class lens that can beat it. I find it great for portraits, and nature work.

For the money you can't get a better lens. I bought this to pair with my 18-55 kit lens on my T2i and since it's a crop body, I get an effective 85-400 mm in a light body. The sharpness at the longer ends is just amazing in such a light and inexpensive lens. At one point I thought I would replace this setup with an 18-270 from Tamron for almost $700 with the idea that the quality of the more expensive lens would offset the wider zoom range. But I was mistaken. Even at just 250mm, that lens was much softer. I sent it back and won't replace this until I can get some L glass. It is a bit fuzzy on the wide end and wide open. When you get to 55mm, you are best to switch to a different lens if you can't shoot over f8.

Consistently fast and accurate auto-focus. Build quality good, but not Pro quality... with that said, the lens is light and much more comfortable to carry around. The heavy L-Glass is not for everyone. The lens has low distortion throughout all focal lengths, but vignetting is higher than normal at f/4-f/5.6... by f/8 vignetting is a non-issue. The lens is sharper at 55mm than 250mm... gets "softer" starting around 135mm. Center sharpness never gets "razor" sharp, but edge-to-edge performance is impressive and is very good throughout all focal lengths... color and contrast is also very good. Image stabilization makes this lens an all around winner... very little "fuzzy" images taken with this lens. Excellent performance for the price... for [$] refurbished the lens is an absolute steal!

"This is the first image I've had the pleasure of critiquing that I really enjoy and it's a lot better than most portrait work I've critiqued from photographers 10 years your senior." -Brandon Partridge

Now that you've got the gear you need, here's how to set up and photograph the heavens.

This telephoto zoom lens is designed with Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology while retaining compactness and lightness, in response to demands of photographers.
This high zoom ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88-400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses) and the image stabilizer effect equivalent to a shutter speed about 4 stops faster than the same size lens without Image Stabilizer.
In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you could formerly hold a 250mm lens steadily was 1/250th of a second, with Canon's 4-stop stabilization correction, you could hand-hold at shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second. It also uses a UD-glass lens element to correct chromatic aberration for excellent image quality throughout the zoom range.
