I was hesitant to spend the money (kind of expensive) for this. I bought a lens without a hood and have used one of those collapsable rubber hoods. But the lure of the right tool for thr job kept nagging at me. Finally I broke down and bought it. Very glad I did. As usual Canon makes a special hood for each lense according to specifics and this was no exception. The rubber hood I was using worked with mixed results, this hood has no mixed results...it works perfectly. Also of note...when you reverse the hood, which I do when I put the camera in a bag,it fits absolutelt perfectly in the space between the lens and the body, a very tight fit. All in all, you can find aftermarket solutions....but it seems Canon always has the best solution. There are no down sides to it.

One of the most important accessories for each lens you own. A lens hood provides multiple functions: it shades the lens from stray light, improving your contrast and image quality; in inclement weather, it can assist in keeping moisture or wind-blown debris off the lens; and it protects the front barrel from the inevitable impacts against walls, door frames, and other real-life obstacles. Almost all EF and TS-E lenses have a Canon lens hood engineered specifically for it.
