This used Canon 550ex flash (which I think debuted about 1998) arrived clean and looking virtually brand new and working like new. I used it as a master to trigger a 580ex II outdoors, but the 550 is a powerful flash by itself.

I use this flash for fill-in outside portraits, indoor for balancing exterior / interior lighting, and for macro photos. I have two of them which work flawlessly together in wireless E-TTL mode.

I use this 550EX mostly for groups, portraits and fill flash. Also, it can be a Master or a Slave and can be radio triggered wirelessly. My 430Ex is now my slave due to 550EX's GN of 180 feet. I have a School Alumni event coming April 18-20 in Las Vegas and I will be using it for portraits, groups posed and/or not.

I personally have been using this as a slave/backup unit. Fully functional upon arrival. Great quality control from the used department. Honesty and integrity still prove to be the key to success in times of austerity. The flash unit is dated so it has it's issues -- don't expect the luminescence of diamond when you pay for a cubic zirconia. It performs as expected. Nothing more - nothing less than it's original design parameters allow.
Peace a.

I've used one for many years. Dropped it on sidewalk. Batteries ejected. Put them back and kept shooting. I took a chance and bought a 2nd one used from Adorama. It was rated as "E". I was surprised to see it in next to new condition. It performs flawlessly.

Speedlite 550EX is the main component of a flash system designed together with the EOS-3 SLR camera. It provides full compatibility with the area AF technology employed by the EOS-3 and refined E-TTL autoflash for improved performance. Other main features include a maximum Guide Number of 180 (ISO 100, ft.), an AF-assist beam which links to the EOS-3's 45-point area AF, FP Flash (high speed sync), FE lock (a flash version of AE lock), and FEB (Flash Exposure Bracketing). The Speedlite 550EX also incorporates a built-in wireless transmitter, which can control other Speedlite 550EX units set up as slave units. Flash coverage is set automatically from 24mm to 105mm, and a wide-angle panel extends the coverage to 17mm. The Speedlite runs on 4 AA-size batteries, and can also be used with optional external power supplies such as Compact Battery Pack E and Transistor Pack E. Recycling times are faster than those experienced with the Speedlite 540EZ. Speedlite 550EX is compatible with all EOS models.
