Helps balance sunrise/sunset exposures

The grad grey filter helps to provide a more balance exposure across the frame which is very handy for sunrise and sunset photography. It allows capturing the foreground as more than just shadows while preventing the sky highlights from being blown without resorting to HDR post processing of multiple exposures.

Great in every way but ...

... it's plastic, not glass. Nice gradual change from clear to dark makes it very user-friendly. Being plastic has one benefit - if you're clumsy like me and drop it, it won't break. However, the light transmission with any plastic is not quite as good as glass, but in the final photo that's really imperceptible unless your filter is really scratched up.

Decent filter

I thought this filter was decent. I do wish that it had a more gradual transition but it works good enough for me.

It does just what it is supposed to do.

This is a good graduated ND filter. I hand hold it in front of the lens. The best ones are glass and much more expensive. I have to be more carful with Cokin, this works for me.

Great for sunrise and sunset photos

This filter is great for capturing sunrise and sunset colors. Just slide it in the Cokin filter holder and adjust the transition line to match the horizon. The filter balances the bright sky and the dark landscape to bring out all the details.

I use it to darken the skies and not the subject, when there is too much brightness in certain areas and it even out the background

My usual subjects are landscapes. This is a necessary filter to control sky burn-out

Budget Friendly GND

This is probably the most affordable GND on the market which is why this is the second time I've owned this filter (the first one became scratched and was then lost). As with most of the lower end Cokin filters, they are plasticy, can scratch very easily, and are likely to add a slight magenta tint to the darker end of the filter. That is a given. Sometimes you may want to stack this filter with a stronger ND for longer exposures but your image will have a STRONG magenta tint throughout. But if you're on a budget and don't mind a little post-color correction, this is fine. I would advise making sure to purchase a soft filter pouch, as the plastic containers that P-series Cokin filters come in don't do the trick and because they will scratch or chip within them.

Makes a big difference!

I purchased the Graduated ND filter after reading Bryan Peterson's book "Understanding Exposure." I ran some test shots following the guidance in the book. What a difference this filter makes!

Great budget item to start with.

I was most interested in the Cokin P holder and bought this so I could acquaint myself with utilizing the complete system. While I do plan on experimenting with other filters, but this will suffice and works great.

Description on Page is Incorrect

These filter perplexed me for the longest time because they did not seem like they functioned as advertized. I found a PDF file on Cokins website which tells the TRUTH and accurately descrtibes these filters. Great Histogram Fixer

Great to correct a histogram that shows a peak in the dark range and a second peak in the very bright range. Using this filter allows the exposure to be more consistent. A grouped histogram allows better manipulation of brightness and contract without blown or underexposed pixels.

color cast, otherwise great

Mine has a slight magenta color to it, only in the darkened half. I actually like the effect it has on sunrise/sunset photos, which is what I mainly use this filter for, so I didn't bother trying to return it.

Dramatic control of sky and clouds

Bought a Cokin wallet at the same time - stores with protection yet instant availability. Both great products!

Great filter!

I bought this filter to help me deal with bright sky backgrounds. My first use of the filter was in Spain where we had very bright light much of the day. Since I was not able to always time my photography due to travel, the filter really helped with situations with particularly bright light in the background. Blues in the sky were deepened and the balance of light in the photo was really good.

I like it!

I really like this system of filters. However, not when I am in a hurry. Takes a little longer to put on camera, than a screw type filter.

Grad. Neutral Density Filter

Helps to controll bright areas for a more consistant tonal range during exposure, especially with bright skies. I used the rectangular filter, which allows me to position it where I want.

About Cokin P120 G1 Hard-Edge Graduated Neutral Density 0.5 (1.6-Stop) Filter - P Series

FEATURED REVIEWS

does the job

By Steve

I already had the Cokin ND4X graduated filter, but I found that it wasn't enough for many situations with bright skies. So far the ND8X appears to be doing a great job. I still need to test in more extreme situations, if the skies would ever clear up here in Portland. But even with cloudy skies, the results were interesting/dramatic. This is a good filter to add to your collection!

performs as advertised

By Charles D.

works great for toning down overly bright sky

The Cokin G1 Hard-Edge 1 2/3-stop Graduated Neutral Density filter helps darken specific areas of the image, like bright skies, while leaving other areas of the image unaffected. The filter is most dense at the edge and tapers to clear at the middle, with a hard-edged line of transition. A neutral density filter with a hard-edged line of transition is useful for images with defined horizon lines. Neutral density filters do not affect the color of the image while creating a more balanced exposure.
