I had difficulty with the quick release plates slipping on the cameras no matter how tight I made them. Thats why I didn,t give it 5 stars. Next ime I'll get the Really Right Stuff Head.

The slightly unusual design takes a little time to get used to. However, once you get past that you will thoroughly enjoy the rock solid support your equipment gets.

This head has a very smooth adjustable friction control system. You can easily operate the ballhead and panning controls with gloves on. It provides a stable platform for 400mm and 500mm lenses. The precise friction control lets you exactly position your equipment with ease. It is a good quality ballhead with a nice finish. The quick release plate system has an adjustable friction clamp and a saftey lock that are easy to operate and work well. The quick release plate is the perfect size for mounting large DSLR's and telephoto lenses. The rubber mounting surfaces protect your camera and lens finish and prevent them from slipping. The quick release plate is very adaptable for a wide variety of equipment. The quick release plate has 1/4" and 3/8" mounting screws plus a spring loaded video pin. This configuration is easily modified for different equipment configuraions. The cameras and lenses I use all have a single 1/4" female mount. I optimized the quick release plate for my equipment by removing the video pin and 3/8" mounting screw. I then installed the supplied 3/8" to 1/4" tripod mount adapter plug into the quick release plate 3/8" screw slot. This acts as a retainer for the 1/4" mounting screw in the quick release plate so it does not fall out when changing equipment in the field. The plate is easily changed back to original configuration using nothing more than a screwdriver.

I mounted this ball head to the Gitzo GT3541L Series 3 Mountaineer Tripod to support a Sigma 150-500mm lens mounted on a D-300 with battery grip. It was not cheap by any means but if you want rock solid support and one that should last a lifetime, together this combination will support a blacksmith's anvil with fluid movement! Very satisfied with this purchase. The ball head is listed above as a series 2 but is is not...It is a SERIES III. You can't go wrong as far as I'm concerned if your willing to shell out the extra bucks for a great matchup for big equipment. [...]

Gitzo warranty
Gitzo's GH3780QR magnesium center ball heads are renowned for their smooth and precise movements and high quality manufacturing. PTFE is applied to the ball and blocking pads to eliminate all traces of jarring and skipping. The result is highly accurate positioning adjustments, even with long tele lenses. Gitzo center ball heads now feature two newly developed materials for discs and quick release plates that substitute the traditional cork plates.
Discs now feature Safe Lock - a special techno polymer that maximises locking torque, eliminates micro movements and cuts vibration. It is also used on Gitzo tripod upper discs for a better fit between tripod and head. Quick release plates now feature Safe Grip, a high grip material that holds your equipment safely and prevents it from moving or slipping.
