So far so good. We are still exploring the functions, but so far it has taking our live stream to a new level of quality with function with our sound board along with a ATEM mini-switcher and some other extras. Also the price was great too.

I am retired and recently donated the last of my cameras, a JVC HM200, to our local school. Since I still shoot a weekly piece for our church, I replaced it with the JVC HM170. Essentially it is the same camera. It works very well, does exactly what I want and is very easy to work with. Plenty of positives with the HM170, as well as with the HM200. So far...no negatives. I would recommend this camera to any professional shooter.

I used it for two years and eventually sold it. The camera was easy to use and the menu was pretty straight forward. The compression can sometimes be seen in some shots (blocky areas of dark colors, etc). Low light wasn't that great. Having three rings (or two rings and a dial) to separate focus, iris, and shutter was great. It really came in handy. The camera itself was light but it was just boxy enough that it was sometimes a pain to lug it around all day with me. I took it to Disney World and it was definitely a chore trying to decide whether to pack it up and store it to go on rides or have it out in the open to be ready for some action. This was one of the reasons I sold it. I went to a smaller mirrorless camera.

The criticisms I've read about poor low light performance are true. Most people would probably be happier with something that has a bigger sensor. Terrible I.S. But for an inexpensive entry into 4k with pro sound, it was just what I needed. On a tripod, good lighting, and a good mic plugged in, I'm happy with the results.

Not much to recommend.... Very cheap flimsy feeling construction. Confusing / badly thought out location of controls. Poorly designed lcd screen, feels like it would break off easily. Lots of trade offs to get 4K. Better to get HiDef and wait for 4K. Poor low light capture, very noisy. Very hard to focus even with "focus assist".

While on the road filming documentaries I love to take my fully-rigged JVC GY-LS300 with an assortment of lenses as my primary camera. But also like a run and gun camera for on the go shoots and the JVC HM170 fit the bill perfectly. It is fully adjustable and there was no learning curve as all the controls match the LS300. I am able to set both cameras--the stationary and the on the move cam--to the same settings and get footage that matches up pretty will in post. A professional might (amazingly) be put off by the low price of this camera, but a professional will generally make a decision based on features and specs rather than the price tag... and this camera sells itself in that department. No, this is not going to be your A camera if you're a pro, but a B camera at this price with all the adjustments of your big camera is really a bargain. And if you're an amateur hobbyist, you have at your fingertips full auto point and shoot, or all the manual controls you're reading about in the guides. I've been a JVC fan for decades and am so pleased that JVC still manufactures quality products.
