Review Summary

Some folks out there in internet land have stated the Leica Summarit-M lenses are not quite up to Leica standards. Well, I disagree. I cannot vouch for the first iteration of the Summarit-M lenses, but I must say, the 75mm f/2.4 Summarit of the second generation I recently purchased is absolutely wonderful. This is a beautifully made lens, much heavier than I thought it would be, with just the right amount of damping of the incredibly smooth focus ring, and with such a nice precise click stop aperture ring. With camera to the eye, this lens is so easy to grab the focus ring, then find the aperture ring, and release the shutter. I say it is heavier than I thought it would be, thinking this would be a light weight fragile feeling lens. Not so, it feels indestructible, and the weight balances so nice with my M10. Optical performance? Beautiful. This lens produces beautiful images whether wide open or stopped down. I have a couple of pre-Aspherical Summicron-M lenses, and as far as I'm concerned, this Summarit-M is their equal in image quality. My next new Leica lens will be another one from the Summarit family.

The Leica Summarit-M 75mm f/2.4 Manual Focus Lens with Black Anodized Finish provides users with fast, fixed lens with a short telephoto field of view. The 75mm utilizes a 6 element and 4 group optical design that allows for sharp optical performance across the frame. An aperture range from f/2.4 to f/16 also contributes to versatility in a variety of shooting conditions. Additionally, the lens is fully manual focus and features 6-bit coding for bringing up frame lines and transferring metadata to the camera.
The lens' industrial design allows for better optical performance compared to its predecessors and allows for a closer minimum focus distance of 2.3'. On the front of the lens are threads for using a 46mm filter and the 75mm features an eleven-blade aperture for smooth out-of-focus elements.
