Absolutely amazing lens when it comes to sharpness, color fidelity, contrast, falloff, low light performance and of course bokeh. I purchased it to complement my APO Summicron SL 50mm. The summilux is so good that the APO Summicron hasn't been used once since I got this lens. Autofocus is about 20% slower than the APO Summicron SL lenses but when you nail focus on that perfect shot this lens creates magic and reminds you why you spent $6595.00. Its also built like a tank so durability is unrivaled.

Excellent image quality, which I can go on and on about. The lens is built like all Leica products, solid. We all need a good 50mm lens and this is an exceptional one.

This is by far the best 50mm lens ever made. Sure it had the slow auto focus initially, but with firmware updates this has been fixed. I would highly recommend this lens if you can afford it. This lens best suits Portraits, landscapes.

Image quality is superb, but the AF is slow and unestable. I have a Canon 50 mm 1.2 with an adaptor for Leica which I considered slow for the AF. I bought the Leica 1.4 because I expected it to be much more faster ( like the 24-90).

The Leica Summilux-SL 1:1,4/50 mm ASPH. is designed to deliver maximum optical performance and establishes new benchmark standards in terms of sharpness. Thanks to internal focusing, the overall length of the lens remains unchanged when focusing.
A special feature of its construction is the motorized focusing system. In contrast to manually focused prime lenses, where the length generally varies when focusing, the Leica Summilux-SL 50 mm f/1.4 ASPH. has internal focusing.

To ensure high imaging performance throughout the entire focusing range, the focusing group is elaborately constructed with an aspherical element, yet remains light enough to guarantee fast automatic focusing. Its optical design contains a total of 11 elements. Of these, two are aspherical elements and a further four are made from glasses with anomalous partial dispersion for the correction of chromatic aberrations. This complex optical construction reduces all monochromatic and chromatic aberrations to a hardly perceptible minimum. Advanced multilayer coatings on all lens surfaces, the optimum design of the lens tubes, and the rectangular lens hood provided with the lens significantly reduce reflections and stray light.
