This is a very sturdy, well made tripod which is a pleasure to use. i currently have a large binocular telescope with fork mount on it and the Manfrotto supports this 25lb+ load admirably.

I've always wanted a tripod, both sturdy and tall enough, capable of allowing me to shoot from (an) elevated vantage point(s). In the past, I've needed to rely on stacks of apple boxes to reach certain heights. This tripod, though heavy to carry (thank goodness for assistants), performs beyond my expectations. Additionally, I was able to use it with a digital medium format camera, in low light situations. It performed flawlessly!

I kept making do with old "heavy duty" tripods but really wanted to try the 161MK2 and glad I did. For BIG binoculars it is essential. I use it with the APM 100mm Astronomy Binoculars mated to a custom Yoke. The tripod's sturdy crank height adjustment is essential for comfortable viewing and readily adjusts at full-load without losing pointing. This accommodates objects at different elevation angles and people short to tall. The auto-brake is great and prevents losing control of a heavy payload. The shortest height assumes the legs are all contracted (OK) and that they are nearly "doing the splits" (fairly awkward). A more practical min height is more like 34 inches. The fold-in crank is a bit tough to deploy...takes both hands. It is SO superior to my other tripods...I never use them anymore.
