Great overall lens to use! I recently got into film photography and did some research on a good-quality zoom lens I can use with my Nikon N90s. That's when I ran into the 28-105mm lens and saw a ton of reviews saying it's an underrated gem that delivers surprisingly sharp results across its entire focal range. After using it myself a few times, I was pretty impressed with the sharpness when analyzing my film scans. Of course, it's not the sharpest of lenses out there, but for someone who's starting out on film, I'd say it's one of the best bang-for-your-buck lenses! I especially appreciate that it has macro capabilities.

I needed a light weight mid range zoom lens for photographing off-road races. Quite often long hikes are required for off-road racing photography and weight can be an issue. My most used lens was a Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8 which is somewhat heavy and a rather limited zoom range. The Nikon 28-105mm fits the bill with lighter weight and an expanded zoom range. Image quality is comparable to the 35-70mm f/2.8 which is known for the excellent image quality. The lens has a very usable macro function. The only con I have is the AF is not as fast as I would like, but it is generally fast enough and very accurate.

I use it for travel and social events when I need the wide angle. I didn't want to deal with the 24-85's distortion and like having the macro ability - it's great for food shots.

It did take three tries to get a lens free of mechanical and electrical problems, but Adorama customer service was great, especially David Gelb. I like the lens becuase it is compact, relatively light, and is a decent mutli-situation lens. I also like the macro mode that is quite useful. Yes, it doesn't have VR or a built in motor, but witha D600 is focuses fast and I can always bump the ISO to get a higher shutter speed. It seems to me it's mostly made of metal and has a good feel in my hands. The hood os a bit strange, but it works.

the one i got wouldn't auto-focus, and the gears ground when manually focusing. but the glass/images produced were good, and the size was convenient (and metal construction was nice and rugged).

A tad soft, but very useful. Even lets one get close to the subject, but not 1:1 macro, of course. I used to use it more than I now do. Now I have it on one of my F100 bodies.

This lens has the lowest distortion I have ever seen in a zoom, making it great for architectural shots. However, corner sharpness could be better, and I have the (subjective) impression that the overall color rendition is a little flat as e.g. compared to me 50mm f1.8.
