Nice lens but Nikon repair very poor

I have had the lens for a number of years but the Nikon repair facility now has it again for the fourth time to repair a sticking focus ring. I would like to get the 24-70 f2.8 but there are many issues with that lens as well. I am quickly loosing faith in Nikon.

Perfect lens!

Don't bother buying the newer 24-70 unless speed of focusing is that important to you - this lens will do everything the newer one will at about 1/3 the cost (as of 2016). Incredibly sharp, incredibly versatile - this is the lens I user 85%+ of the time for professional work.

Heavy Duty Beauty

This is the lens I use the most. Previous to purchasing this lens I had another f2.8 in the same focus range by another company and IMHO it wasn't as sharp. The build quality is amazing and although heavy I like the way it feels.

It's a sharpy

The lens is perfect for events requiring close up usage - weddings, birthdays, journalism. Many think this is a heavy lens, but it is no more noticable than my 28-300, which is just as versitile. The 2.8 makes it a perfect choice for indoor use as well. Sharp and contrasty elements provide a constant pop to final captures. Great for the full frame camera user.

Geat Len for the money

I recently replaced my 28-300mm with this after I got the 70-200mm. After a lot of research, I decided on buying this used from Adorama instead of the 24-70mm. Steve at the sale department is great. He took the time to find me this Len within the serial number range I specified. The Len's condition was listed as E but came in as Like New condition. I can't find any visual sign of usage and it works perfectly. I am very happy with it. Compare to the 28-300mm, this is sharper and faster. But the 28-300 is still the best all-in-one walk-around lens for travel.

So versitile!

I shoot Glamour/Fashion and this lens in on my camera about 90% of the time. I can shoot with it all day long without having to change lenses and minimal distortion at wide angle allows me to get into some pretty tight spaces to shoot.

Chunky but Sharp

This is a good alternative to the 24-70, for the money, and does focus fast (on a D7000) and take great sharp photos. However it's bulky and there continue to be new technology improvements (coatings, VR) that make newer lenses appealing, and older manual focus lenses are a relative bargain.

Good kit lens

Versatile lens for most day to day photography. Very light. Too bad about the plastic mount. However, it is quite light. Use it all the time. Thinking about buying a 50 mm for lower light situations. Great price point.

Great edge to edge sharpness and color

I've owned a lot of great Nikkor lenses. This one is a step up in sharpness and color. It will be my "go to" lens for 80 % of my photography. I have never seen better 35mm sharpness. Large prints will not be a challenge. The weight is easily managable, as well.

Great performance for general use.

Pin shape optics. Great bokeh. Good focusing. Heavy and bulky for the long haul.

The beast is the best!

I absolutely love this lens It's Always on one of my cameras or in the bag. General purpose standard wide angle photography and Portraits are what I use it most for. I have Lots of other lenses, primes, specialty and tele's but this one always delivers the goods! I use it far more than my super wides. Super useful range 28-70 f2.8 fast sharp and you could knock out someone trying to rob you with it LOL

Tack Sharp

Great lens! I do 50% of my shooting with this lens. Fast and sharp with a very useful zoom range. I use this for most for my environmental portrait shooting. It is heavy and large, even bigger with the lens hood attached.

First class standard zoom lens

This lens is probably the one I use most often. It is sharp, contrasty throughout its range. It shows little distortion or light fall-off. I am very particular about my equipment and this lens has earned my good opinion. It focuses very quickly and quietly and is very easy to work with. The very corners of the image are a little soft on a D3 below 50mm if the aperture is F/8 or wider -- and I do mean the very corners, it is difficult to find a picture where this is any problem. I highly recommend this lens.

24-70 too heavy, too expensive !

I have old 35mm lenses : Nikon, Canon and Minolta, way lighter and as good if not better than this lens generation. What are engineers doing ??? One of the most useful Nikon lens is the 18-200mm VRII. May be not as sharp, low aperture, etc. but good enough for 99% purposes. When is Nikon try to think that simpler is better? I would rather pay 1/4 of the price to have a 24-70mm F2.8 400g that last 2 years, than this one that last longer but is a pain to use and carry.

Great lens

Heavy "Beast" but great in low light situations! I use this together with a 17-35 Nikon and it gives me good speed. Might be heavy, but tied to my D700 it does a nice job.

Beautiful heavy lens

I bought this lens used. Incredibly the owner had it very well taken care of. The glass is mint. I went to take some test shots and was amazed at the quality of the pictures. The 9 rounded blades come through at f2.8. Sharpness is stellar at the short end wide open. If your lucky enough of finding one mint like I did go for it. Unlike the nikon 17-55mm 2.8 this one works in fx. Its a keeper for sure.

Good ol lens

Although I highly recommend the newer 24-70mm 2.8 Vr over this lens, I will tell never to hesitate in purchasing one of these if you see one at a pawnshop or yard sale. I love mine so much I haven't even upgraded to the newer model. It is a little beefy but is superb in every other way, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.
