I use a pair of SB-600 speedlights as remotes with a SB-900 in IR comander mode and not having to use cables to synchronize and use the iTTL mode is the ultimate configuration. I recommend this configuration highly, I use it with a D300s for high speed action photography at 1/320 sec shutter speed (high speed flash synch on D300s) and am amazed at how well this flash system works with the built in IR linking. I also use one SB-600 as an on camera flash on occaision and it works great for that as well...

Big upgrade to built in flash and works great as a remote flash with SU-800 or PocketWizard. No external power option - but also much cheaper that flashes that offer this.

This small, light, and less expensive (than the 800 & 900 and newer) offering from Nikon does everything I need it to do. Can be used remotely with the built-in slave. Too bad it was "discoed" in 2010. It's a steal if/when you can find them. I have two and I'd like a third.

I use these as my studio-on-the-go ... I have three of them and just love the quality of light when used with modifiers. They are no longer being made so buy them whenever you see them!

I'm not a flash expert so take this with a grain of salt, but I think this flash is underpowered. Please avoid this one and get a better one.

Great flash, good output, and works well with the Nikon creative lighting system. Only complaint is that for the cost it should have a port for connecting radio triggers.

I currently have 3 sb600's and love them all !! While they don't have the most powerful GN , they work flawlessly with the CLS system as well as on my pocket wizards. I often put these inside my westcott halo's at events and for portrait work. To bad they no longer make these!! They're a bargain !!

Great flash to get to know before buying an expensive one. Does the job as for filling in light when and where you need it.

I bought this flash to use as part of Nikon's Creative Lighting System, but found the programming and interface slow and frustrating. I plan on trying again, but will use the more capable SB-900. For a quick supplemental light I'd rather carry the smaller, simpler SB-400 (for a quick bounce flash).

I had the relatively uncreative task of photographing a house and its content inside and out. The job was easy having this flash working automatically with my new Nikon. The potential for more creative and advanced flash work is clear. I will be enjoying this area more now that I took the step to use this type of unit.

Great product. I have enjoyed learning the art of taking a great photograph and one of the lessons was use the right amount of flash. I knew that my pictures were lacking the right amount of flash so I turned to Adorama. Even with the great flash on the Nikon D90 I needed more. This flash has been recommended by many people and I can now see first hand why it has been so popular. The price point is great too.

I had very positive results from this flash the very first itme I used it. It makes a world of difference over the cameras built in flash. Easy to use and has many features available for the more advanced user.

I have used the SB-600 so far for outdoor fill flash and I have added it to my indoor studio portrait lighting system where I attach it to a light stand with a Photoflex mount and a 32" umbrella. The performance is excellent and it will recycle for me faster than advertised. With a few test shots and easy minor adjustments (powering up and down) it will provide flawless light. My batteries (NIMH) will run about 250 frames, so if you do long portrait sessions like me, have plenty of extra batteries on hand.

Now I have 3 of these. They are excellent! Very good to use off camera together with the build-in commander on the Nikon D70 -> D700 (+ all in between). I've got a D80. It's very powerful, yet still a small unit. It cannot act as commander, but if you got a Nikon D70->D700 you can use the build-in flash as commander and save 50% on the larger and bulkier SB-900. Highly recommendable!

For the price it's a good flash. Very helpful for indoor/outdoor shots to soften and lightly highlight shadows. The only con about the flash which was very disappointing to me is that I can't use it wirelessly with my Nikon D5000. For that to happen I need to spend more money which I wasn't looking to do right now.[...]

I needed a flash for all the right reasons and the Nikon SB 600 worked best for a very very reasonable price.

I bought it because I wanted to use it with my "old" F100 film camera. The SB-600 will probably be the very last Nikon Flash to support the traditional TTL mode of film cameras. The bigger and heavier SB-900 doesn't. If you shoot on film... you have no other choice !

For just over $ Nikon's SB-600 serves as a great addition for an on or off camera lighting source. Right out of the box, the automatic mode syncs well and adjusts output based on your settings without more than turning it on. For when you are ready to get more creative, the addition of the SB900 or now discontinued SB-800 will allow remote flash use as part of Nikon's brilliant Creative Lighting System-CLS. Once I get a solid handle on this flash unit, I will indulge in gels and reflectors to gain a more professional look for my routine photographic purposes.

Autoexposure flash has been around since its introduction by Braun back in the 1970s. Basically, all auto-exposure flashes look at the light coming back from the scene and turn off the flash when it thinks enough light has been produced to adequately light the subject.
