Pentax K-5

Camera and Lens arrived they are both beautiful. Camera had only 107 pictures previously taken. Great build, awesome results. Still on a steep learning curve with new equipment but am certain this camera will be a solid replacement to my Nikon D200. Right now my two favorite aspects are: In body stabilization and 100% coverage viewfinder. I was tired of the 95% offered by my D200. I want a camera that will show what I shot on the finished product. I am not a fan of "cropping" or off camera edits. What you see is what you get with my shooting. So Far So Good. Highly recommend asking for Frank Brown. He beat the competition by a landslide. The competition offered a refurbished body; however, this unit was as close to New In Box that I could ask for, without the NIB pricetag.

Solid build and solid performance

Use it for general photography and family snaps. So much better than the K-x. The good: * Excellent build * Excellent usability * Very good high iso performance * Very good backward lens compatibility (in body SR) * Good auto exposure * Good auto white balance Not so good: * If you are left eyed: green button placement * Flash exposure blow outs

Outstanding Value

I bought this back at the end of 2010 as my first DSLR. I put a lot of research into this decision, and it came down to the K-5 versus the Nikon D7000. I ended up going with the K-5 due to a lower price, better performance, and access to my father's old k-mount lenses. I don't regret this choice one bit. The k-5 provides outstanding image quality, and fantastic usability. The only thing I really find lacking about it is video functionality and performance, which is not to say it's terrible. It's just not as good as it should be.

Everything you'd want from a camera

The K-5 paired with a WR lens (such as my Pentax DA* 16-50) is an amazing tool for photography in any weather conditions. I've used it successfully rain, snow and extreme cold. It does have problems sometimes locking accurate focus indoors, which can be annoying. Otherwise it's the perfect camera for me.

Pentax K5

I use the K5 for wildlife, still life and portraits. It is a beautiful camera that is fast and the warmness of the photos rival film. I've only used Pentax and stepped up to the K5 from the K20. It was like going from a volkswagon to a Ferrari!

Pentax K5 an outstanding camera

This camera is astonishing, and for the price Adorama sells it for, it is a STEAL. The image quality is amazing, shooting at iso 6400 is incredible, to have relatively noise free images at THAT setting is just insane, and with the two little consumer zoom weather-proof lenses, how could you go wrong? I have a collection of really good Pentax glass (FA* lenses) that REALLY make this camera shine. I see why the review sites scored this camera SO highly. Nikon/Canon buyers, you really need to rethink your decisions; in this price range, this camera cannot be matched. The feature set is astonishing, as is the 400 page owners manual. Lens correction IN the camera, individual noise reduction settings, I cannot say enough about this thing. Weatherproof to boot, and it is built like a TANK; the controls tight, accurate, and obviously made of first class switches and materials throughout. I look forward to their upcoming pro-series cameras.

Pentax does IT for me!!

This camera is my favorite camera of FIFTY years of buying and owning cameras. It is ALL I want in a camera, with the capacity to use every lense of K-mount format. Man,how about HDR built in and image stablization, built in??Is that great or what?? This is a class-act, that gets little recognition, from the Nikanon gang. Love their (PENTAX) glass, too! RJM

Made the right choice

Quite happy with it so far, but hasn't been used much. Biggest con I've seen so far is the quality of video (highest setting). At 70/30fps quality is very good, but at 1080/25fps portions can be a bit choppy. Overall, quite impressed with the camera. Thinking about buying another one.

My First DSLR

This is my first DSLR and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I know that there are newer versions out there but the only big difference that I could tell is that they are better at video. The Pentax easy to use and learn. This is great for a beginner like me. It also has enough features to keep me happy as I develop my skills.

Great Camera

This is a great camera, as the overwhelming majority of all reviews indicate. Easy transition from other Pentax cameras. "Hard" buttons for frequently used functions, easily navigable menus, great low-light performance, quiet shutter, comfortable in the hand, solid, attractive, fantastic image quality, many customizable features. Some will say auto-focus lags competitors, but after a month and a half, I don't see it--it's been very quick and very accurate with all of my lenses, even in low-light.

Great Upgrade to K5

I have not had the camera long enough to use all the features. Upgraded from a K2000 and have found all the features i wanted. Great camera, have always been pleased with the picture quality from Pentax.

Worthy upgrade of the K-7

I love the versatility of the K-7. It is a photographer's camera. However, low light noise was just too much. The K-5 carries all the friendliness of the K-7 with a much better sensor. There are also improvements in allowing frequently used controls to be customized.

One of the best camera's on the market.

This camera was for my wife. She's retired now, but was a professional photographer. The pentax k5 Gives her the full ability to take GREAT photos. We Combined the camera with the pentax Fa31mm f1.8 AL Limited edition lens. Both products are FIVE STAR(*****) EXCELLENT. I would like to add the buying experience thru Adorama was also a FIVE STAR(*****) EXCELLENT. Thank you Meyer.

I have waited for awhile on this...now that they have the K511 and 11s...the price finally dropped down. Thus far I am very pleased with the new features and performace of this camera.

Pro camera at beginner prices

Bought this after comparing it to the likes of Canon T4i and the Nikon D7000. Wanted to get the Pentax 645D but that one was pretty out of budget :-). This camera is great. Two of the best features that no DSLR in this price range offer are image stabilization in the camera body and Pentraprism viewfinder. Add to that this camera is weather resistant and coupled with weather resistant lenses can handle any environmental condition you can throw at it. Does not have fancy features like tilt screen LCD or does not have thousands of lenses available like Nikon/Canon ( but honestly, does anybody buy all lenses made my any mfg). K5 is compatible with all K mount lenses made by Pentax including older manual focus ones and that means to the beginner photography enthusiast, you can really explore the realms of photography without making a hole in your pocket because image stabilized lenses do cost a lot. Overall, great camera excellent construction and great photo quality.

Excellent dynamic range from this sensor, happy to not need to shoot and process HDR to capture high-contrast landscapes. The Pentax lens selection is rather poor, though.

addicting camera

I usually don't write reviews about product but I decided to make an exception for this camera. The K5 is just fantastic, I can't let it down. Image quality is phenomenal, use of the camera becomes second instinct, feels like a camera and not a toy. One recommendation I would make is: get a limited lens to take advantage of both the quality of the camera and the compactness. With the use of prime limited lens, the camera is easy to carry around (remember:"the best camera is the one that you have with you") Well done Pentax!

great body; improvement over K-7

I've had a K-7 since early 2010, and it's a great camera. But when the new K-5 ii models came out, I found the original K-5 irresistably priced. Improvements include a better sensor, faster and more accurate auto-focus, and greatly improved high ISO performance. What's unchanged are the wonderful build quality, great ergomonics, weather-sealing, and compatability with decades of Pentax glass: of the lenses I typically carry, 8 are vintage PK or PKA mount manual-focus, and only 1, my DA 70/2.4, is AF--and I often shoot that manually, too. I still have my K-7, though it serves mostly as a backup now. Unless you need a full-frame sensor and/or even better AF, or have already bought heavily into another system and lens mount, the Pentax K-5 is a great choice.

Wicked better value than Nikon

Pentax cameras are focused on usability. From its entry level, you get in-body stabilization that effectively makes ALL lenses have images stabilization. It works just as well compared to the in-lens stabilizations offered by other brands. Both entry and advanced level bodies are weather sealed. Something other brands do not offer. No more worrying about some rain washing away your investment. The controls are laid out very intuitively and the grips are ergonomically designed. The menu system is very well organized as they put the most frequently used items up front. My main body is a Nikon D700 for professional work. If they had a full-frame equivalent of the K-5, I'd switch in a heartbeat. Check out their WR (weather resistant) lenses. Pentax offers kit lenses (18-55 and 50-200) with weather sealing at a very affordable price point. These kit lenses will let you go on travel and shoot in inclement weather unlike other brands. I'm definitely keeping an eye out on the Pentax full-frame body, rumoured to be out at the end of 2013.

Pentax K 5

I upgraded from the Pentax Kx. Really impressed with the K5's ISO range and ability to grab low light shots. Con would be that it is not easy in the beginning to find camera controls but will adapt after getting used to camera. Great price for a camera in this class.

FEATURED REVIEWS

out of the box (update)

By over-the-hill

I've had the camera for two weeks now. While a nasty cold has kept me from trying everything I wanted to test the camera with I have had opportunity to test its latitude, color accuracy and freedom from digital noise. Poor light conditions (especially on cloudy days) often mean pictures with digital noise in deep blues, greens and blacks. One thing I like to do is to photograph trains, so a shutter speed of 1/500 is about as slow as I dare go. With the lens open to f4.5 and 1/500th second...

Pentax steps up and delivers a top-of-the-line APS-C camera--the K-5 Digital SLR Camera Body, featuring a low-noise 16.3MP CMOS high resolution sensor, sensitivity up to a best-in-class ISO 51200, 7 frames-per-second shooting capability and a responsive, high-precision 11-point auto-focus system. A high performing PRIME II imaging engine produces rich-gradation, very high resolution digital images. Plus, full HD video at 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The K-5 makes advances in plenty of other areas as well, such as faster autofocusing speed and an upgraded High Dynamic Range (HDR) function that can even be used without a tripod. A bright, clear 3" LCD display with 921,000 dots resolution makes it easy to compose and review your images, or use the bright viewfinder for composition, secure in the knowledge that the highly accurate 77-segment metering system will deliver the goods every time. Shake Reduction image stabilization makes it possible to shoot at 2.5 to 4 shutter speeds slower without seeing camera shake in your photos. A lens is not included.

And all of this photo goodness is packed into a body of sturdy, lightweight magnesium alloy on a chassis of stainless steel. The 77 special seals in the body give you a dustproof, weather-resistant and cold-resistant camera, for reliable operation in harsh conditions, at temperatures as low as 14 deg.F (-10 deg.C). An extremely reliable shutter unit provides a top shutter speed of 1/8000 second and is tested to 100,000 shutter releases.
