Spot on for E6 but useless for Kodachromes, which is what I bought it for. Silverfast images are solarized catastrophes, the native driver with quickscan push putton isnt too bad but shows infamous Kodachrome blue shift. Best option is to buy VueScan which minimizes your PS tweaking.

This is a great unit. I am using it to scan in 60+ year old Kodachrome slides. The color replication and iSRD are superb. With many of the slides it's hard to believe they are 60+ years old when you see the final image. What really made it apparent to me was when I compared this to an HP flatbed scanner with a slide attachement. Night and day; this blew the HP out of the water. Worth every penny. The only flaw is the slide holder is quite flimsy. Do yourself a favor; if you have a lot of slides order an additional slide holder set. That way you can prep the one while the other is in use. Makes things that much quicker.

hold out and buy a Nikon scanner. i migrated from the Nikon Coolscan 4000ED and i miss it already. this unit is very much dependant on Silverfast even if you use other scan engines. namely i tried Viewscan. the front buttons need to find Silverfast tho drivers are installed. this makes their other software they bundled unusable. i like the carrier heavy design great, except one thing: the cover hinges from the end. nikon carriers hing on the side. so if you have curled negatives it makes for lot easier film strip placemet. obviously Plustek designers have never used film or been in a darkroom. i was going to buy a Plustek Bookscanner but now i do not think so.

The built in infrared sensor in the 7600i film scanner, coupled with SilverFast software version 8 is a powerful combination that removes more film scratches in one click that I could have rectified in hours with either a scanner sans infrared or older software (both infrared hardware and Silverfast 8 are needed to maximize this capability). Note: not yet compatible with OS 10.7 (Lion)

Silverfast - the full version with target slide is bundled with this scanner - is worth more than the price of this scanner, so is a great value. Very powerful scanning software with a large learning curve. The scanner is modestly slow for simple scans; but if you use the more powerful features of the software - multiple pass scanning, iSRD to remove scratches (no Digital ICE in this scanner), Adaptive Color Optimization, GANE to reduce noise - then scan can stretch up to 20 minutes per slide. The results at best, are good but very soft. I would have bought a Nikon slide scanner instead, but the company is now fully out of the film business, so those of us with slides have to choose from a small number of lessor choices, like this scanner. But if you have a lot of slides to scan, you might want to consider using a commercial service to do it instead - this scanner will take you a very long time to work through them; better for scanning slides when needed.

Within 1/2 hr, I was able to set up the scanner and obtain scans from slides on a Mac OSX Snow Leopard Machine. I find the supplied software (Silverfast) to be potentially of value but to have some learning curve. Like another reviewer, I opted to download and buy VueScan and have been very satisfied with the scans for slides (ektachromes and kodachromes) color negatives and B&W. I will still send the best slides to a scanning service (I use Pixmonix), as well as the more difficult ones (shadow detail).

The setup and installation on a Mac is quick and easy. I got the scanner out of the box and had my first slide finished within 15 minutes. The scratch and dust auto correction works about how I thought it would - a little clumsily - but it does get you started and cleans up most of the problems on the first run. You will want to do final edit in photoshop though. The carrier trays feel substantial and the whole unit seems well built. Next time they could save the carrier bag - I'd rather not have received it - and the foam packaging has to go - let's be a little greener wherever we can.
