The model shown above is not an autofocus lens. Some cameras have the autofocus inside, such as the Nikon D80, and the lens will autofocus. I bought a Nikon D5100 which has no internal autofocus, thus making my lens strictly a manual focus. But when using it for macro work, manual focus is preferrable. It is also not VR. Later models are autofocus and have VR. All those letters on the lens can be confusing. 'AF' on a lens means it will autofocus on cameras that don't have internal autofocus. I wasn't aware of that when I bought it, but it didn't matter since I was using it with an AF camera. The lens description (above) is a bit misleading. "AF Telephoto Macro Lens for Nikon AF-D Cameras." It means it's only an autofocus lens when used with an autofocus camera. Experienced photographers would know that, but novices might not, and end up buying a lens that doesn't suit them.

Great lens for macro work. At 105mm, it gives more than enough standoff room. It's also great as a portrait lens. One of my favorite lenses.

I like the lens, especially for the price, the macro images I have taken so far are crisp, the depth of field is good and it's easy to use. Points of disappointment: AF is slow, when it does work it has a tendency to seek back and forth at least twice before it sets, and it is noisy, much better as a manual lens. It is very tight to mount on my body (d200) maybe not so on other bodies. All in all I bought it because I needed a Macro lens that didn't cost a lot. This lens produces a very nice image, and that is the most important part.

I was debating on getting this lens, but than I just read up on it more and decided to get it. I have not been more satisfied than ever. I love this lens, a very good, steady macro lens. I noticed it's a bit slow on focusing, but other than that perfect lens for its price.

Seriously awesome lens! Half the prize of the Nikon but can't compare to the Nikon because I have never used it. But I will say there is no way the Nikon is twice as good even though it is twice as much. This lens has encouraged me to purchase other Sigma lenses. I have never had a problem with the zoom slipping. The only thing is that it is as easy to attach as a standard Nikon lens and it is heavier than Nikon lens.

I use this lens with a Nikon D80. You couldn't ask for a better macro lens. It is sharp, sturdy, and easy to use. I must say that I was leary at first when I ordered it, as I have seen mixed reviews on Sigma lenses... but was pleasantly surprised at the quality of construction and output of this lens. I do a lot of abstract macro, and floral photography, and it produces great results. Subjects are perfectly sharp at small apertures, and the DOF with shooting wide-open couldn't be any better. The lens does produce hexagonal fragments in the background called "bokeh" when shot wide-open. This is desireable to some, but undesireable to others. I personally like the look. One downside is that it is very slow to auto-focus, especially when used extremely close-up to the subject, as it has a hard time searching for a focal point. I almost always use this lens in a controlled environment, so it has rarely been an issue for me, as I usually focus manually. Overall it is an excellent lens for the price, and very much competitive with higher-end lenses.

I'm having a lot of fun with this lens. It's easy to focus, sharp and makes a good mid-range prime telephoto.

A medium telephoto macro lens which is designed for traditional and digital SLR cameras, its lens power layout produces an excellent optical performance. The lens coating cuts down ghost. The DG lens is designed to reduce the influence of harmful light caused by reflections from the digital image sensor.
Its outstanding optical performance provides the ultimate correction against lateral chromatic aberration and distortion. This lens boasts compact dimensions of 2.9" (maximum diameter) and 3.7" (overall length).
It has a filter size of 58mm and, at just 15.8 OZ, is also extremely lightweight. The minimum focusing distance of 31.2cm (12.2in) is capable of macro photography with a maximum magnification of 1:1. It is possible to enjoy photography from life-size close-up to infinity.
This lens is equipped with a "Focus Limiter Switch" that limits the AF range so improving the speed and accuracy of auto focus. It also incorporates a Dual Focus (DF) system that is designed to make the lens easy to hold during auto focusing.
The large focus ring offers smooth and positive action whilst focusing manually. A screw-in hood is included, for convenient use of circular polarizing filters. This telephoto macro lens has an equivalent field of view of 178mm on a digital SLR camera (when used with the SD10).
