I use this primarily in low-light situations, but also in nature photography. It auto-focuses very well and yields nice, crisp images on my Canon T51. The wide to moderate telephoto is ideal for shooting things like art exhibits, installations and such.

This lens has a nice range. It focuses quickly and moves smoothly. I use it as an all-purpose lens - it was the only lens I used to take pictures at my son's wedding reception. It did a nice job even in less-than-optimal lighting conditions - a little bit of noise at high ISO, which is to be expected. It could be a little sharper, but that may be more an issue of me getting used to using it in different conditions.

This is a nice lens not up to the same as my 17-55mm 2.8 IS but can be a backup if needed and is a great lens to use in wedding details with the OS. See my image of wedding rings below.

Searched for a long time to find the best all-around lens, especially for photographing paintings, people and nature. Does all well, but you need to use OS setting for sharp pictures without a tripod. Have not tried macro outdoors. Lens is a bit large and somewhat heavy, but I'm small and can handle it just fine. For specific macro use, a dedicated macro lens might be better. It's very fast--a big plus--and it gets a lot into the scene--wide capture. Bokey is very nice. Great lens; very happy with it.

Bought this as replacement for my kit lens. I have only been using it for a couple of weeks. So far I have been happy with it. It took a while to get used to the weight as it is quite a bit heavier than the kit lens, but I have been very happy with the quality of the shots I have been getting. I definitely see improvement over the kit lens. Overall, I feel it is a good value for the money.

I have mainly used this for landscape work so far. I definitely like the range(17-70)that this lens has which enables you to all kinds of options when using it. In fact, it basically does not come off my camera now. Great walk around lens. Very comparable to my Canon L series lenses in quality; without the dent in the wallet. Thank you Adoramqa and especially Jacob with all your help and knowledge. It is nice to know that there are still stores out there where the customer comes first-without a question one of the best experiences I have had in a long time!

This is really a great lens. I bought it for the f/2.8 aperture at 17mm for night time shots of the stars mostly. It also does great for 70mm f/4.0 head shots to give an incredible portrait with superb bokeh. It's also really good for indoor low-light photography of groups of people at f/2.8. The "macro" quality is also above what I would expect from a lens that isn't exactly a dedicated "macro" lens. The close-up focus is very good. With all this said, this is a fairly hefty lens. It doesn't bother me at all but those upgrading from a kit lens might find it surprising. I like the lens a LOT!

I wanted an all purpose lens but didn't have high budget range, so, I got this. I couldn't be more happier with lens output. Just awesome pictures from every trip. Very good all walk around lens.

I bought this to replace my Kit lens, I use it on my Canon 500D. It takes really good pictures in low light, and the focus is really fast. Now it isn't perfect, and if you just line up your shot and press the picture without waiting for the lens to focus then you will get blurry photos. I didn't realize how heavy this lens is compared to the Kit lens, it really feels like a serious upgrade, so I do not know why there have been some negative reviews. Unless you are trying to earn a living with your camera, you probably don't need L glass lenses, and since I have a crop sensor, most of you will sense that I am a novice. I bought the camera to take pictures of the kids as they grow, and a pocket point and shoot was just too slow on some of the shots. The DSLR has made a huge difference and with this lens I feel that I will be able to catch just about all the moments I am trying to get. I also have a 50mm F1.8, and it is a great lens as well, and have even splurged for a 70-300mm to get some additional reach. I think though that this lens is going to be on my camera for the foreseeable future though.

I'm not a pro but I can really see the difference, especially when I compare this lens to Canon 18-55 IS. Manual focus ring is really great and everything that I shoot with it is really sharp. This lens made me think about buying even better one.. Just to see if there will be any difference.

All I can say about this lens is WOW. I mean really WOW! On a crop camera this 17-70 gives the same field of view as a 28-112mm lens does on a full frame - remarkably close to the 24-105 so popular on the full frame cameras. I bought this lens and during the return period, also borrowed a friend's Canon 15-85 f3.5-5.6. My goal was to compare the two and decide which one to buy. They were both very similar with the Canon winning on the overall feel. It was slightly faster with the AF, The Canon lens has full time manual focus which is not on this lens. I shot some test images and compared the two and the Canon just barely edged it out in sharpness. But that's where Canon's superiority ended. When put into real everyday use, this lens gives much more room for creativity. While not a true "macro", I was about to focus down to about 2-3 inches from the lens from 17mm all the way to 70mm. When combined with the f2.8 I'm able to get some shots that simply aren't possible with the Canon. When you can shoot at 17mm and get 3 inches from a small flower and have the rest of the horizon spread across the background it has an impact that you can't justify giving up for a slightly better sharpness. Especially when the lens is sharp enough for large portraits. By the end of the first day I had decided on the Sigma. Not only did it open up more creative possibilities, but it also happened to be $300 less expensive. For that, I can handle not having full time manual focus. Who does that anyways?

Delivered on time to hotel, the lens was used during my business trip in U.S. Nice choice for one-lens-in-the-bag. Wide angel helps to make a picture, say, in Yosemite park to fit sequoia in one photo-shoot or make a picture of a group of 15 persons in low light conditions. I never faced a situation when I can't used this lens. I recommend this lens as an universal lens especially for business trips or vacations when each gram matters.

I've used this lens on my 40D and 50D for travel, weddings and events with great results. The only down-side to this lens is that I can't use it with my 5D MkII!

I've not used the lens a lot yet, but it's razor sharp, very fast, can have a very narrow depth of field. I like it.

I heard some reviews concerning a front focus problem. so the first thing I did was test the focus distance. My lens was dead on. so after using it for a week i have not taken the lens off and realized im in love! I threw my old kit lens on [...] This lens is very crisp at all focal lengths, and is a stop faster and +15mm than the kit lens. The color saturation is great also! the lens is very smooth and sturdy, even if it is a tad heavy.

I'm a Canon user and I said that I would never purchase a third party lens. About 10 years ago I had bad luck with a Sigma 28mm lens that only lasted one day. That lens did not allow FTM full time manual focus(by the way neither does this one) so when I tried it, it was all over. Ten years later I decided to give Sigma another chance. I wanted a walk-around, travel lens that would span the range of 24-70mm for my cropped camera, the Canon 7D. Canon offers several lenses in that range, but none of them fit the bill for me. They were either to slow, to expensive, or too cheap. This lens has a Maximum aperture of f2.8 at 17-23mm, f3.2 at f24-27mm, f3.5 at 28-49mm, f4.0 at 50-70mm. Not exactly blasing fast, but fast enough. If you use the Image Stabilizer(OS, that's an additional 3 stops. So at 70mm you could shoot at the equivalent range of f2.8 easy. The build quality of this lens is very good, better than some Canon lenses and much better than the kit lenses. This lens looks good on my camera really ! The OS(Image Stabilizer) is wisper quiet. It turns itself off when the LCD display on the camera turns itself off. The AF is quiet, not as quiet as USM, but barely noticeable. I was surprised, because of some reviews I read said the lens was noisy. So far everything seems to work even the macro focuses fine. I can also get pretty close up about 8" or less from the subject at 70mm which is simply amazing. Add a close-up diopter filter and you are good to go. I haven't taken this lens through all the changes yet, but so far the images look good, very sharp, with good contrast and should I say, "Dynamic range". Of course if you want something better, you can shell out hundreds of dollars more, but for my uses "11X14 prints or less", this lens will do. Another bonus, this lens came with a Free cleaning kit, hood, and UV filter[...] I'll probably have to update this review once I find some bugs if I ever do, but so far I am very happy with this purchase. This is the perfect travel/walk-around lens for cropped(1.6X) cameras, with an equivalent reach of 25mm-112mm. Now I don't have to carry 2 lenses anymore like I use to. No more bumping up the ISO to astronomical levels either. WOW !

lens is way better than kit lens. 72mm = heavy lens. focus faster and better in dark/low light situations. not a dedicated macro lens but it works. comparing to canon kit lens 18-135mm, sigma is far better built and feel. i should have bought this a long time ago.

When shooting indoor sports photography such as basketball, hockey, boxing, water sports and so forth, there are two possible approaches to getting sharp images at the peak of the action.
Sigma Corporation adds unique, anti-shake technology to award-winning 17-70mm lens
Sigma announced the new Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM. This large aperture standard zoom lens offers an aperture of F2.8 at the 17mm focal length and is ideal for many situations such as portraits, sports, macro and general photography
The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible.
The maximum aperture of F2.8 makes this lens ideal for hand held photography as well as producing an attractive background blur and high speed auto focus.
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 22cm (8.7..) throughout the entire zoom range and maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7, making it ideal for close-up photography. It is possible to focus as close as approximately 4.7cm from the tip of the lens to the subject making this lens particularly useful for close-up photography.
Three aspherical lenses and one ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass element provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images.
The incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures a quiet and high speed AF. This lens has a rounded 7 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image. The inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the supplied petal-type lens hood and circular polarizing filters.
