Very versatile lens. Not perfect but definitely the best bang for your buck if you can't afford the faster lenses.

I have been thus far more than pleasantly surprised with this lens. Not only does it provide a range not found by many of the other big names, it also produces crisp accurate images. I have told my other photography friends that this is the best lens I have owned to date. Fast focusing, not bad as a macro lens, actually such a good feature in that it allows you to get within a really short focusing distance of your subject, which is great. There is a lock on the lens which helps to prevent lens creep especially if you want to use the lens at 17mm only for some reason. Strongly recommend this lens. Sigma has made be a believer. That new 35mm they just released is on the horizon.

I needed a lens that would replace my beloved Canon 28-105 3.5/4 walk around lens for my cropped camera. I looked at other lenses but they were either too cheap, too slow, too short, or too expensive. This one was right in the middle. It has a great range 24-112 on a crop and the price was not too bad, plus I can go down to the equivalent 24mm range, something I could not do with the Canon. The image quality is very good on this lens not stellar, but good enough for a walk-around lens which is what I really wanted. I'm not into pixel peeping and place more value on the content of the image than the pixels it contains, but I was pleasantly surprised by the pictures coming out of this lens. I compared it with some of my more expensive lenses, some which cost twice, even three times as much and this lens did fairly well. I

The sharpness of this lens, paired with its versatility and price make it a really great value.

Just recently purchased this lens for general purpose wide angle/moderate zoom use. Thus far I am loving it. I have a lot to learn about using it but most all my shots are in acceptable focus. It's low light capability gives me the opportunity to take good pictures in low light when the use of flash is prohibitive or you just want to use available light. Color is good. I can get the wide angle shots and zoom in nicely when appropriate (note - this is not a long telephoto capability but for general use works quite well). For me this was a great purchase.

A little lens creep. Inevitable from my experience with other brands of lenses.

I orginally bought this lens about 2 years ago. I dropped it and the casing broke. I had been pleased with it so replaced it with the same type lens.

Great everyday lens. Covers a standard kit 18-55 plus a little more with a lot more quality. I use it for general shooting and a lot of studio work including semi-macro. Great results!

This is the lens I chose as the replacement for the 18-55mm kit on my new Nikon D5100. What a huge improvement over using primes and changing out lenses all the time (on replaced D90), just to get the low-light shots I like. I don't mind at all that this lens is heftier than the kit/prime lenses. If you want an outstanding DX walk-around lens, I highly recommend the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 . Best value out there. (Better IQ/value than Sigma or Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, too).

I've only had this lens a few days but I am happy so far with the purchase. The construction feels very solid and the photos I have taken so far are great. I compared same photos shot with a nikon 50 1.8 and there is no difference. A definite step up from a kit lens. Purchasing through Adorama was great. [...]

In one review I read this lens was designated as an "entry-level lens"...I beg to differ. So far its performance is superb and its construction quality is great. Some may complain about its weight, but, apparently, I do not fit in with the current main-stream opinions that lighter is better. I avoid feather-weight equipment which moves when I blink my eyes. In an early test of the lens at an event, I focused on a person from about 20' away, full shot. When I inspected this frame at full expansion on the computer, I was amazed at the detail this lens had captured!

I had the Nikkor 16-85mm and had problems with the zoom ring sticking. I decided to try the Sigma. This is a fantastic versatile lens. It is sharp, has a very close minimum focus distance and is very well built. The Sigma is more useable in lowlight than the Nikor. The OS works just as well if not better than the Nikkor. This lens also produces pleasing bokeh and the HSM is fast and accurate. It is a nice match for the D90 and balances well. If you are contemplating a lens in this catagory I would recommend this Sigma 17-70mm OS. You will not find a better lens for the money.

I was looking for a standard-rane zoom, and the 2.8's were completely out of my price range. I compared this lens to the nikion 16-85VR, 18-200VR, 18-105, etc. The quality of the output from this lens beat them all. My copy of this lens had no centering defects, and shows improved corner sharpness and less CA than the older non OS version. OS works as advertised, about 3 - 4 stops improvement. There's no lens creep (even without the zoom lock) or barrel wobble. And although it's not a true macro lens, it takes superb close-up shots. Unless you can afford the nikon 24-70 2.8 or the canon 24-105 f4, get this lens for about 1/3 the cost.

Sigma Corporation adds unique, anti-shake technology to award-winning 17-70mm lens
Sigma announced the new Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM. This large aperture standard zoom lens offers an aperture of F2.8 at the 17mm focal length and is ideal for many situations such as portraits, sports, macro and general photography
The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible.
The maximum aperture of F2.8 makes this lens ideal for hand held photography as well as producing an attractive background blur and high speed auto focus.
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 22cm (8.7..) throughout the entire zoom range and maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7, making it ideal for close-up photography. It is possible to focus as close as approximately 4.7cm from the tip of the lens to the subject making this lens particularly useful for close-up photography.
Three aspherical lenses and one ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass element provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images.
The incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures a quiet and high speed AF. This lens has a rounded 7 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image. The inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the supplied petal-type lens hood and circular polarizing filters.
