Very good for the price

A gift to someone close to me - so I can use it myself :) This lens is much better built than comparable Nikon lens. Metal ring instead of Nikon's composite material. Of course it does not provide the sharpness of a $1000+ lens, but I was surprised about it for this price. OS works! It bring in average 3 stops.

Very usable, not very sharp

I bought this lens to use on D5000, mainly for sports photography. It works there pretty well: auto-focus is reasonably fast and accurate. I can track quick moving subjects, and the OS is surprisingly efficient. I get usable, though slightly soft, pictures even at 200m. It's not a very fast lens at f/4-5.6, just average. You need light. Some say bad things about Sigma build quality, but I'm very happy with the quality and handling, it feels solid, particularly if you consider the price. Manual focus ring is only fair, not great, but much better than with e.g. D5000 18-55 kit lens. The picture sharpness isn't great, the main reason I hover between 3 and 4 stars. Distortion is not a problem, and I've even taken some portraits where the bokeh is very pleasing. Bottom line: not a spectacular lens, but good value for the money if doing sports. For nature photography, too soft.

About Sigma 50-200mm f/4-5.6 DC OS HSM Compact Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon Autofocus Digital SLR Cameras.

50-200mm F4-5.6 DC OS HSM. Compact, High Performance Telephoto Zoom Lens...

This compact high-performance telephoto zoom lens incorporates Sigma's own Optical Stabilizer function. The lens incorporates SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass in the front lens groups and is equipped with an inner focusing system to provide high image quality throughout the entire zoom range.

The incorporation of HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high-speed auto focus. The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function effectively eliminates the effects of camera shakeso subjects can be easily and clearly seen in the viewfinder as well as in the image. It allows the use of shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than normal for steady, handheld photography.

For Sony and Pentax mounts the built-in OS System allows the photographer to see the stabilized image in the viewfinder and can be used as an alternative with cameras having built-in image stabilization. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images throughout the entire zoom range.

This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 43.3inches (110cm) throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.5. An inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making it suitable for use with circular polarizing filters.
