Good lens for the price

I purchased this just before attending a flower show and used it to capture amazing images of all kinds of blooms. With the large volume of attendees at the show, there wasn't a lot of time to spend with each specimen, so I had to use the AF feature, shoot, and move along. I was extremely pleased with the ease of use and the quality of the images.

Good affordable macro

Great walk around normal that will shoot 1/1 macro as well. Compact and light. Fit and finnish not as good as My other sigmas, and lens hood is junk (it screws in and does not allow the lens cap to be mounted. Suggest a protection filter as You WIIL bump the lens as it will focus a half inc away. A screw in rubber lens hood works well.

A real bargain!

What more could you ask for? It's a fantastic lens, sharp at every aperture and does its job as a macro lens perfectly. It's ideal for macro work that doesn't requre a lot of working distance. It's also a nice alternative the much more expensive Nikkor.

Excellent Lens

I purchased this lens based on reviews I had seen on other web sites and I do not regret it. The lens focuses quickly in AF mode and in manual focus, it focuses as smooth as an AF lens I've used does. I use the lens to take closeup pictures of wildlife, for example to photograph scales on a lizard that are useful for identification purposes, etc. The results are very sharp with excellent color. I am very happy with this lens. Only drawback is that it needs both a filter thread adapter to get to 58mm thread so that then a 58C ringlite adapter can be added. It would be nice if for Canon mount, the lens either came with the ridge for Canon macrolites or came with a 58mm thread so that canon adapter could be used without a step-up adapter.

very nice product

The product itself delivers best sharp photos. However, for macro photography this lens is just really too small! I mean, you have to be really close to the subject when photographing macro. Being close to the subject has its cons, such as, insects will escape or bite you. I had this lens for almost 1 year and I could not do good macro with it at all. But it is just a perfect and sharp 50mm lens which can be well used in portrait photography.

Good choice for me

I've used it to take close head shots, light box pictures, and plants. I really like the micro feature.

I love this lens

This was my first true macro lens. It was very inexpensive compared to others so really wasn't expecting too much, but I loved using this lens. Using manual focus (which is highly recommended) I got some great sharp macro photos. Of course the depth of field is very shallow, even with the aperature closed down, but that's usually what I'm after anyway. Color reproduction is great. It's a no-frills lens that's easy to use, takes nice sharp macro pics and great portrait shots with a nice bokeh which is a nice bonus. I don't have this lens anymore, but if I need another 50mm macro lens, I wouldn't hesitate to pick this one up.

The most used lens in my camera bag.

I keep this lens on my camera most of the time. It is good for many different types of photography. A good carry around lens. On my crop camera it gives a little telephoto boost, but not too much.

Very Nice Lens

Am somewhat new to the world of photography and really am attracted to the "macro" part of it so am not an expert on lenses but so far have loved the results I've gotten with this lens and price wasn't too bad either.

economical macro lens

very nice macro lens. The housing is a bit weak (I dropped mine once & it needed a new focus chassis), but it's a very nice alternative to the canon 100L

Best glass I've bought to date

This lens in one day alone has put all of my previous macro work to shame. Takes amazing macro photos in bright and dim conditions. When paired with a close-up glass filter this lens can really put you extremely close to subjects you never thought possible!

Sent it back, AF never worked

Took one last chance on Sigma, never again. [...] Needless to say, I went with a Canon and guess what? It works brilliantly!

Very good lens

I like this lens, because it is not to big to handle while hiking, also can be used for an excellent macro lens, and as a fixed lens it does it's job very well.

Great Lens!

This was my first macro lens and I really like it. It takes some great pictures that are very sharp. The autofocus tends to hunt some in different situations, but I find I use manual focus more often when using it with macro.

Awesome Lens for All Seasons...

...especially during the spring and summer when the bugs, flowers, trees and other things are in full swing. I took this out to shoot some insects and the like the day I got it. If you aren't familiar with the focus limiter and try to use auto-focus without it, you'll find the lens hunts and is sometimes not so accurate at acquiring the subject. That being said, this lens produces VERY sharp images, and its focusing distance is incredible. In a nutshell, great lens.

Super Sharp Sigma

This lens is sharper than the Canon 50mm and unlike Canon it goes and soes 1:1 without making you buy avery expensive accessory. All 3 Sigma macros are great lenses. I moved from EOS to Sigma becuase of the inexpensive first-rate macro lenses. Not heavy or L-quality buiod, but just a great normal macro lens at a great price.

Tack sharp, but a little slow

It is tack sharp which is what I was looking for. It can be very slow to focus, even on the limited setting, and it seems to get confused once in awhile. The motor is loud, too, but I did know that about this lens when I bought it. Overall, I am happy with it and would reccommend it as a great portrait and macro lens.

Very nice lens

Out of the box and not a single bad shot. I love this lens and think everyone should have one.I was looking for a good portrait lens and not only found just what I was after, but more. The pictures it allows me to take are clear with great color, even in low light. Great bokeh as well. Thanks Sigma [...]

A Quality Lens at Minimal Cost!

I use this product on my Nikon D200. It is a fast lens that is quite versatile. Images taken with it have all turned out sharp with excellant detail. I highly recommend this professional quality lens available at a very reasonable price. The lens lives up to the review given-(by Popular Photography Magazine the latter part of 2006). This lens and my Nikon 18-200 VR are all I carry for most image shoots! Really-all I need 90% of the time.

Sigma 50mm f/2.8 DG EX Macro for Pentax

For $[...], the Sigma f/2,8 DG EX macro lens is an excellent value. It works well as a macro lens but the focus is slower than the Pentax version and it better to take macros with the camera mounted on a tripod with cable release. It does work hand held however and also serves as an excellent low light lens indoors and outside.
