Favorite (animal) portrait lens
By Tevan A.
I was on the fence for years about getting this. I didn't want the depth of field to make the subject appear unnatural in front of a heavily-blurred background. The lens is tack-sharp and the bokeh is gorgeous. The photos don't feel unnatural, just focused on what you want the viewer to see. I'm currently using it for animal portraits. For humans, I'll either use this or a 50mm 1.2, at least until Sony releases a quality 85mm.
This lens is a game changer!

After starting my Sony journey with a second hand A6000 and kit lens(which is a great camera by the way, but has its limits ) I was itching to step up to a full frame body and lens, and a more capable prime lens as well. After much research I decided on the A7R3 body and because of the high 42.2 mp resolution, I wanted to pair it with an equally good lens. Because I shoot a lot of outdoor, full body portrait for my website, I needed crisp images and bokeh, from a distance, as I wanted a certa...

Sony unveils its latest addition to the premium G Master series with the Sony FE 135mm F1.8 GM Full Frame E-Mount Lens. This lens sports a lightweight, weather-sealed magnesium alloy body weighing roughly 950g and a Fluorine-coated front element to resist dust and moisture. The maximum f1.8 aperture yields sharp and detailed photos even in low-light conditions, while its newly rearranged dual-autofocus groups allow for a 0.7-meter minimum focus distance and x0.25 maximum magnification. Being part of the G Master series, this lens is capable of rendering high-resolution images across the frame and produces pleasing bokeh that is perfect for portraits. It can achieve this using Sony’s Extreme Aspherical (XA) and Super ED elements coupled with a fast f1.8 focal ratio and longer focal length for a shallower depth-of-field. Nano AR coating is also applied to the lens to minimize lens flares, surface reflections, flare, and ghosting while increasing color fidelity and contrast when shooting in strong lighting conditions. Sony pushes the envelope with the new FE 135mm F1.8 GM Full Frame E-Mount Lens, optimizing its focusing capabilities without compromising its design and compatibility.

With high resolution and impressive bokeh, the new 135mm F1.8 full-frame prime lens from Sony is a portrait photographer’s dream. Announced today, the large-aperture G Master Prime lens also features quick autofocus acquisition, all in a portable and lightweight size that’s ideal to transport on any portrait, wedding, or sports photography job...READ MORE
XA (extreme aspherical), Super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass, and ED glass elements precisely deployed in an advanced optical design effectively correct aberration, while a floating focus system works with these aberration correction measures to ensure that the highest possible resolution is maintained right out to the image edges throughout the lens's focus range.

The extremely high surface precision of XA elements, careful control of spherical aberration at both the design and the manufacturing stages, and an 11-blade circular aperture all come together to produce spectacularly smooth, elegant G Master bokeh that maximizes the creative potential of the narrow depth of field available with this 135mm F1.8 lens.

Sony's innovative XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors also play an important role, making it possible to maintain focus on moving portrait subjects, performers on stage, or similarly dynamic subjects with impressive speed, precision, and reliability, while also providing AF control that is quiet and virtually free of vibration.

Although it is a 135-mm telephoto lens, a floating focus system that effectively controls aberration at all focusing distances has made it possible to achieve a minimum focus distance of just 2.3 ft (0.7 m) and a maximum magnification of 0.25x for close-up photography. Small accessories and other subjects can be captured with remarkable resolution and soft, beautiful background bokeh.

The important features include customizable focus hold buttons, a focus range limiter, an aperture ring with switchable click stops, a dust/moisture resistant design1, and a fluorine coated front element. Overall, this is a lens that meets professional requirements for control and reliability for both stills and movies.
